3 GETTING STARTED

3.1 SWITCHING ON / OFF

To switch the gauge on, press and hold the “On/Off” ( ) key.

The gauge has an integrated backlight which will timeout after 30

seconds of inactivity.

The unit will switch off automatically after 5 minutes of inactivity.

3 GETTING STARTED (continued)

3.2 SETTING UP THE ELCOMETER AVU

The procedure outlined below must be followed each time the

Elcometer AVU is switched on, prior to testing adhesion gauges.

1 Fit the appropriate dolly adaptor -

screwing clockwise to tighten into

position (Figure 1). The reading on

the Elcometer AVU display should be

zero.

 Do not overtighten as this will apply

pressure and result in inaccurate readings.

2 Connect an adhesion gauge or

actuator to the dolly adaptor

(Figure 2).

 Elcometer 506 / 510 actuator shown.

3 Apply pressure until the reading on the

Elcometer AVU display is between

2 - 3.4 MPa (300 - 500 psi).

4 Leave the gauge pressured for a

minimum of 30 minutes to prepare the

Elcometer AVU for test and allow the

equipment to settle.

Note: The Elcometer AVU should be set up in an

operating environment of between

20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F).

4 PERFORMING THE TEST

Figure 1

Figure 2

The Elcometer AVU is designed to provide users with a method of

verifying the performance of their pull-off adhesion gauges .

The performance of an adhesion gauge should be verified at a number

of test pressures. Refer to Appendix A on page en-8 for recommended

test pressures for Elcometer pull-off adhesion gauges based on our

certification procedures. For other manufacturers’ gauges, refer to the

manufacturers’ specification.

a The Elcometer AVU is supplied with an Elcometer 506 / 510 20mm dolly adaptor fitted. Dolly adaptors for other

adhesion gauges from Elcometer and other manufacturers, are available as optional accessories -

see Section 7 “Dolly Adaptors” on page en-6 for details.

4 PERFORMING THE TEST (continued)

1 Fit the appropriate dolly adaptor -

screwing clockwise to tighten into

position (Figure 1). The reading on the

Elcometer AVU display should be zero.

 Do not overtighten as this will apply

pressure and result in inaccurate readings.

2 Connect the adhesion gauge or

actuator to the dolly adaptor (Figure 2).

 Elcometer 506 / 510 actuator shown.

3 “MAX” should be displayed on the

Elcometer AVU LCD to indicate that

‘Max Hold’ is switched on. ‘Max Hold’

holds the Elcometer AVU reading

when the required test pressure has

been reached on the adhesion gauge.

Press the “MAX” softkey to switch

‘Max Hold’ on and off.

 The display will hold the maximum value

until the ‘MAX’ softkey is pressed again.

4 Apply pressure until the required test

pressure is reached on the adhesion

gauge and compare the adhesion

gauge’s reading with the reading on

the Elcometer AVU display - see

Section 5 “Assessing the Results” on

page en-5.

5 To switch between measurement

units, press the “MPa/psi” softkey.

The Elcometer AVU will provide adhesion readings for 20mm dollies

irrespective of which dolly adaptor is fitted - see below for additional

information.

ELCOMETER 506 / 510 DOLLY ADAPTOR FOR

50MM ACTUATOR SKIRT (Part Number: T99923936)

When using the Elcometer 506 Analogue Adhesion Tester with 50mm

dolly adaptor, the reading on the Elcometer AVU display should be

compared with the reading on the 20mm scale of the Elcometer 506

analogue pressure gauge.

Figure 1

Figure 2

a The Elcometer AVU is supplied with an Elcometer 506 / 510 20mm dolly adaptor fitted. Dolly adaptors for other

adhesion gauges from Elcometer and other manufacturers, are available as optional accessories -

see Section 7 “Dolly Adaptors” on page en-6 for details.

Adhesion gauges should be tested at a number of pressure / adhesion

values across their measurement range - see Appendix A page en-8

for recommended test pressures for Elcometer pull-off adhesion

gauges.

When comparing the adhesion gauge reading with the Elcometer AVU

reading, the user should refer to the adhesion gauge’s accuracy

statement. This is usually quoted in the operating instructions or

technical data sheet.

The adhesion gauge can be stated as performing within specification if

the Elcometer AVU adhesion reading is within the stated accuracy of

the adhesion gauge. If outside specification, re-calibration is

recommended - contact Elcometer or your local supplier for further

information.

The Elcometer AVU can be used to re-certify adhesion gauges if it has

a current and valid calibration certificate, dated within 12 months of

test. This provides users with a Calibration Certificate which is

traceable through the certification of the Elcometer AVU unit in

accordance with Elcometer’s procedures.

The Elcometer AVU is supplied with a Test Certificate as standard and

is also available with an optional Calibration Certificate. To certify or

re-certify the Elcometer AVU, contact Elcometer or your local supplier.

5 ASSESSING THE RESULTS

When using the Elcometer 506 Digital Adhesion Tester or Elcometer

510 Automatic Adhesion Tester with 50mm dolly adaptor, the dolly size

should be set to 20mm before test - refer to the Elcometer 506 or 510

User Guide for instructions on how to select the 20mm dolly size.

ELCOMETER 106 SCALE 6 DOLLY ADAPTOR

(Part Number: T99923938)

When testing the Elcometer 106 Pull-Off Adhesion Tester with the

Scale 6 dolly adaptor, the Elcometer AVU reading should be multiplied

by a conversion factor of 6.4516 before comparing with the adhesion

gauge reading.

For other manufacturers’ gauges, please refer to the manufacturers’

instructions for adhesion readings using 20mm dollies.

4 PERFORMING THE TEST (continued)

www.elcometer.com

en-5

6 AFTER TEST

1 Release all pressure from the adhesion gauge.

2 Detach the adhesion gauge or actuator from the dolly adaptor.

3 Press the “MAX” softkey to release the ‘Max Hold’.

7 DOLLY ADAPTORS

Dolly adaptors are available for testing Elcometer 106 , 506 and 510

pull-off adhesion gauges. Adaptors are also available for testing other

manufacturers’ gauges.
