1 ABOUT YOUR GAUGE

This Thermo-Hygrograph records the temperature of air and its relative humidity and is a portable laboratory

instrument using the hair hygrometer principle.

1.1 GAUGE FEATURES

• The thermograph sensor is U-shaped bimetal which quickly deflects according to changes in air

temperature.

• The hydrograph sensor is a length of human hair or synthetic fibre which changes in length according

to the moisture in the air.

• The hair is specially treated to respond quickly even at low temperatures. This makes it useful for

outdoor measurements. For indoors and store rooms the fibre is recommended because it needs less

maintenance and is less sensitive to contamination.

• The sensors are protected against mechanical damage. All axles are in jewel bearings for low friction

and other parts have a high resistance to corrosion.

• The clockwork can be set to one revolution per day, week or month.

• Fibre tips and charts for one year's operation are supplied with a new instrument.

1.2 WHAT THE BOX CONTAINS

• Elcometer Thermo-Hygrograph with battery fitted

• 7-day Reading Chart Diagrams, 55 sheets

• Operating instructions.

2 USING THE THERMO-HYGROGRAPH

Instruments are delivered with the writing arm locked. To reach it, push the lever to the left, open the case

to the right and left side. On the left side is a special clamp on the switch lever which holds the writing arm(s)

for protection.

Lift the writing arm(s) out of the protection. Put the plug on the linking strip into the socket on the U-shaped

bimetal.

When replacing, the lever locks the case automatically.

Before transporting the instrument, always re-apply this clamp.

New instruments are set to record weekly. To change this, remove the recording drum. Push the red

gearwheel up or down. The top position is 7 days, the middle is 31 days and the lowest is 1 day. Be sure

the gears are engaged.

The battery compartment is under the drum. Lift the drum off its axis to reach them.

To replace the chart, lift the drum upwards off its axle. Make the diagram clamping rail jump out of its slit by

pressing from below. Put a new chart around the drum so both ends are where the clamp rail will be. Press

the clamp rail into the slit on the upper rim of the drum. Ensure the bottom of the chart is in line with the

lower rim of the drum. Replace the drum on its axle.

Remove the protective cap from the fibre pen tip. Set the pen on the end of the writing lever by moving the

disconnecting bar inwards. Adjust the starting point to the correct place on the chart. If the pen does not

write immediately, tap it slightly until it reaches.

3 MAINTENANCE/STORAGE

You own one of the finest instruments in the world. If looked after, it will last a lifetime.

• The instrument should be returned to the factory for repair.

• The calibration can be adjusted after precise comparative measurements using the zero-point

correction screw.

• The cover is made of plexiglas. Clean with a damp cloth with a mild washing-up liquid only.

For checks and certification contact Elcometer or your Elcometer supplier. Your gauge does not contain any

user-serviceable components. In the unlikely event of a fault, the gauge should be returned to your

Elcometer supplier or directly to Elcometer. The warranty will be invalidated if the instrument has been

opened.
