1 ABOUT YOUR GAUGE

The Elcometer 319/2 Dewpoint Meter is used to check climatic conditions in the surface treatment industry.

The gauge measures the following parameters:

• Surface temperature

• Air temperature

• Relative humidity

From these measured values, your gauge then calculates:

• Dewpoint temperature

• Delta T (∆T)

The Elcometer 319/2 Dewpoint Meter has readings memory and an internal clock. This allows

measurements and a date/time stamp to be stored as they are taken.



In order to document the climatic conditions during a coating job, the Elcometer

319/2 Dewpoint Meter is equipped with two types of internal memory. The

memory for manual logging can store up to 6000 records in a maximum of 8

batches. The memory for interval logging can store up to 12 000 records in a

maximum of 8 batches.

Data can be evaluated on screen or exported to a PC using the optional

Elcometer 319/2 Dewpoint Meter Dock. This optional accessory can also be

used to measure surface temperature using an external temperature sensor.

1.1 CLIMATIC CONDITIONS

The risk of condensation forming on surfaces about to be coated is always

present and is difficult to assess without suitable instruments. In particular, it is

difficult to detect condensation on blast cleaned surfaces.

Surfaces with a temperature at or below the dewpoint temperature will be

covered with condensation/moisture.

It is important to take measurements at regular intervals and at different points

on the surface. Factors like sun, shadow, the shape and the mass of the object

to be coated can create unexpected thermal behaviour on the surface.

The memory in your Elcometer 319/2 Dewpoint Meter can be used to record

climatic conditions during a coating job.



1.2 STANDARDS

Your Elcometer 319/2 Dewpoint Meter can be used in accordance with the following National and

International standards:

• BS 7079-B4

• ISO 8502-4

2 QUICK START

The Elcometer 319/2 Dewpoint Meter is ready to start measuring as soon as it has been unpacked.

1. Fit batteries (see page 6).

2. Switch on.

3. Scroll to Measure and then press OK to start measuring.

Your gauge is capable of the following methods of measurement:

To set up the gauge (language, date, time, temperature units, etc.), see “Gauge set up” on page 18.

3 GETTING STARTED

3.1 FITTING BATTERIES

Your gauge is powered by three batteries. The condition of the

batteries is indicated by a battery status symbol [ ] displayed on

the measurement screens. The more segments displayed, the better

the condition of the battery. When the battery is low, the symbol starts

blinking to indicate that the batteries have to be changed. The battery

status is also displayed in the SETUP menu - scroll to Device info and

then press OK.

To save the time and date settings, the batteries must be exchanged

within 30 seconds, however readings data in the memory is not

affected by removal of the batteries. Always check the time and date

after replacing batteries.

Use high quality batteries only.

Alkaline batteries must be disposed of carefully to avoid

environmental contamination. Please consult your local

Environmental Authority for information on disposal in your region.

Do not dispose of any battery in fire.



3.2 WHAT THE BUTTONS DO

Press the LIGHT button to switch the light on and off. The light illuminates the surface being measured and

switches off automatically after approximately 40 seconds.

The display backlight illuminates after pressing any of the buttons on the keypad and switches off after

approximately 16 seconds. This function can be disabled - see “Backlight on” on page 20.

When the gauge is not being used, it will switch off automatically after approximately 120 seconds of

inactivity.

3.3 THE SENSORS

The sensors for humidity, air temperature and surface

temperature are located in the casing at the top of the gauge.

For accurate readings:

• Do not obstruct airflow through the slots in the casing around

the humidity and air temperature sensors.

• Keep your fingers away from the slots - the heat from your

body may affect readings.

• Allow the gauge some time to acclimatise once it is brought from a cold environment into a warm place

or vice versa.

To avoid damage:

• When measuring surface temperature DO NOT USE EXCESSIVE FORCE! A light contact between

the probe and the surface is sufficient. Using force does not increase the measuring speed or improve

the accuracy of the measurement, but it does wear and/or damage the sensor tip.

• Do not drag the surface temperature probe over the surface.

• Although the humidity and air temperature sensors are equipped with an integrated dust filter, it is

recommended to keep the gauge away from paint dust and dirt as much as possible.
