Safety instructions
ATTENTION
Before using the build−up system, it is essential to also read and
understand the Mounting Instructions for the C18 force transducer. This
is included in the scope of supply.
Intended use
The BU18 build-up system must only be used for the accurate measurement of
compressive force. Use for any additional purpose shall be deemed to be not
as intended.
In the interests of safety, the transducer should only be operated as described
in the Mounting Instructions. It is also essential to comply with the legal and
safety requirements for the application concerned during use. The same applies
to the use of accessories.
The transducer is not a safety element within the meaning of its use as
intended. For safe and trouble−free operation, this transducer must not only be
correctly transported, stored, sited and mounted but must also be carefully
operated and maintained.
General dangers of failing to follow the safety instructions
The BU18 build-up system is a state of the art unit and as such is failsafe. The
build-up system may give rise to remaining dangers if it is inappropriately
installed and operated by untrained personnel.
Any person instructed to carry out installation, commissioning, maintenance or
repair of the build-up system must have read and understood the Mounting
Instructions and in particular the technical safety instructions.
Remaining dangers
The scope of supply and performance of the build-up system covers only a
small area of force measurement technology. In addition, equipment planners,
installers and operators should plan, implement and respond to the safety
engineering considerations of force measurement technology in such a way as
to minimize remaining dangers. Prevailing regulations must be complied with at
all times. There must be reference to the remaining dangers associated with
force measurement technology.

Remaining dangers are indicated in these Mounting Instructions by the
following symbols:
Symbol: DANGER
Meaning: Maximum danger level
Warns of an imminently dangerous situation in which failure to comply with
safety requirements will result in death or serious physical injury.
Symbol: WARNING
Meaning: Possibly dangerous situation
Warns of a potentially dangerous situation in which failure to comply with
safety requirements can result in death or serious physical injury.
Symbol: CAUTION
Meaning: Possibly dangerous situation
Warns of a potentially dangerous situation in which failure to comply with
safety requirements could lead to damage to property, slight or moderate
physical injury.
Symbols for application notes and useful information:
Symbol: NOTE
Means that important information about the product or its handling is being
given.

Meaning: CE mark
The CE mark enables the manufacturer to guarantee that the product
complies with the requirements of the relevant EC directives (the Declaration

Unauthorized conversions and modifications are prohibited
The build-up system must not be modified from the design or safety
engineering point of view except with our express agreement. Any
modification shall exclude all liability on our part for any damage resulting
therefrom.
Qualified personnel
The build-up system must only be installed by qualified personnel, strictly in
accordance with the specifications and in conjunction with the safety
requirements and regulations listed below. It is also essential to observe the
appropriate legal and safety regulations for the application concerned. The
same applies to the use of accessories.
Qualified personnel means persons entrusted with the installation, assembly,
commissioning and operation of the product, who possess the appropriate
qualifications for their function.
Conditions on site
Protect the build-up system from moisture and humidity or weather conditions
such as rain, snow, etc.
Maintenance
The BU18 build-up system is maintenance free.
Accident prevention
The prevailing accident prevention regulations must be taken into account,
even though the nominal (rated) force values in the destructive range are well
in excess of the full scale value.

2 Application notes
The BU18 build−up system is a modular measurement system for measuring
compressive forces. These can be measured to 3 MN with the complete
system, as well as to 1 MN with the individual C18−S1/1MN force transducers
(it is essential here to comply with the Mounting Instructions for the C18). This
allows the traceability of a force calibration system for 3 MN to be
implemented with the aid of the more accurately calibrated 1 MN force
transducer.
Because the system measures static and quasi−static compressive forces
with high accuracy and reproducibility, it must be handled carefully. It is
essential to keep to the mechanical structure described in these
Mounting Instructions, as measurement errors may otherwise occur.
Particular care must be taken when transporting and installing the system.
Dropping or knocking may cause permanent damage to the transducers.
The build−up system can be used with both DC voltage amplifiers and
carrier−frequency amplifiers with a maximum carrier frequency of 600 Hz.
With a PTB calibration to ISO 376, the Class 00 rating of the C18−S1/1MN
force transducer is assured. To achieve optimum accuracy, it is advisable to
calibrate the entire measurement chain. This comprises the transducer, the
cable and the amplifier.
The specifications list the permissible limits for mechanical, thermal and
electrical stress.
It is essential that these are taken into account when planning the measuring
set−up, during installation and ultimately, during operation.

3 Mounting
3.1 Removing from the carrying case
The system is delivered fully assembled. To remove it from the carrying case,
remove the upper attachment from the carrying case. The complete unit can
then be lifted at the central ring nut or alternatively by the three eyebolts at the
side.
ATTENTION
Before lifting, you must check that the ring nut is screwed right down
onto the centering bolt and that this is screwed right down onto the
lifting anchor. The eyebolts at the side must also be screwed right in
(use the wrench).
Use only approved hoisting gear with sufficient carrying force.
3.2 Mechanical assembly
The BU18 comprises a mounting base, the transducer, transducer mounting
base, pendulum and thrust piece assemblies and the top plate with the guide
element. The guide element is not designed to be removed.
The BU18 mounting base and the C18 mounting bases, as well as the
transducers themselves, are connected by centering bolts. These bolts are
interchangeable. A central lifting anchor with centering bolts is attached in the
top plate and three side eyebolts are attached to the BU18 mounting base for
transporting the BU18.

The overall heights of the individual thrust piece, pendulum, transducer and
C18 mounting base assemblies match precisely and the surfaces are
superfinished. So the individual components must not be swapped between
the assemblies.
Each component is uniquely identified by the serial number of the associated
transducer and the position number. (see Fig. 3.2, Marking) The serial number
of the complete K−BU18 / 3MN system is located on the BU18 mounting
base.
The transducers must always be mounted by their respective mounting bases
onto the complete system mounting base.
To minimize reproducibility error, the angular position of the transducers and
mounting bases is specified. When assembled, the cable outputs must point
outward radially. For accurate positioning, there are also markings on all the
mounting bases as well as the measuring bodies. (see Fig. 3.2, Marking)
