Overview
Together with an Ophir Quasar wireless device, the Quasar Reader App turns your
android based smart phone into a pocket laser power meter
Laser power measurement with Ophir Thermopile and Photodiode sensors
Configure the sensor for the appropriate laser waevelength and filter
setting
Pairs with any available Quasar device
This guide describes how to operate the Ophir Quasar Reader App.

Chapter 1 –Installing Quasar Reader

System Requirements
To run the Quasar Reader App you must meet the requirements listed in Table 1-1.

from the Ophir website as part of the StarLab

upgrade the firmware.
Android Version
The Quasar Reader app should work with any
phone/tablet with Android 2.3.3 (Gingerbread)
or higher
Note: The Quasar Reader App has been tested with the following:
Samsung GALAXY Ace GT-S5830 with android 2.3.4
HTC and Motorola phones with android 2.3.4
Asus tablet with android 3.1
android 4.0 phone (Google Galaxy Nexus)
Installing Quasar Reader
To install the software:
1. Donwload the latest version of Quasar Reader. It is available on the
Android Market (also know as Play Store) at
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ophiroptronics&feat
ure=search_result.
2. Install the application. Note: At the end of the download process you will
be offered a prompt to install the software.

After completing the software installation, follow the instructions below to connect
Quasar to your smart phone.
Connecting the Quasar device
1. Connect the sensor to the sensor head input on the device.
2. Switch on the Quasar by momentarily pressing the On/Off button. The
blue LED flashes for approximately 2 seconds, and then blinks slowly.

3. On your smart phone, enter the Bluetooth settings screen and enable
Bluetooth.
4. Scan devices to find the Quasar. The serial numbers of any Quasar devices
found in the vicinity will be listed.
5. To pair with the Quasar that you want to work with, set the pairing code to
1234.

7. Your smart phone is now ready to gather measurement like a Laser Power
Meter.

The Stages of a Quasar Reader Session
1. Open the Quasar Reader application from app drawer or home page
shortcut.
2. When the application first opens, it is not connected to any Quasar device. Press
the menu key to open select/quit screen.
3. Press “Select Device” to open the list of paired Quasars.
4. Select the Quasar you choose to connect. This may take a few seconds.
5. The main Quasar Reader screen will be displayed.

6. To end the Quasar Reader session, press the menu key to open select/quit
screen and press “Quit”.

Set the Wavelength Selection to the correct laser setting by
1. Pressing Pause to stop display of measurements.
2. Pressing the wavelength selector button to enter wavelength setting dialog.

a. For sensors with discrete wavelength selection this will open a list with
all available wavelengths. Select the desired wavelength
b. For sensors with continuous wavelength selection, this will display a
slider & text box open showing current wavelength. Modify wavelength
with slider or type in new value and press “OK”
3. Pressing Play to start display of measurements.
Filter Setting
For photodiode sensors equipped with an optional filter, change the filter setting by
1. Pressing Pause to stop display of measurements.
2. Clicking the toggle button that appears next to the label “Filter is”. This may take
a few seconds to take affect after which the new state is displayed.

3. Pressing Play to start display of measurements.
Note: Make sure to physically insert or remove the filter, according to the
filter setting selected. Failure to do so will result in erroneous
readings.

Error Screen
Explanation and How to Recover
Connection failed because Quasar is powered down, out of
range, or with an unsupported sensor type (ex. Pyro)
To recover try one of the following
Turn Quasar device on
Move closer to quasar
Turn quasar off, replace sensor, turn quasar on
Connection was lost
To recover enter the pairing code, as requested, and
continue
No sensor connected to Quasar
To recover connect a sensor to the Quasar and try again
Display is stuck showing 0000
This happens when the power reading is out of the sensor’s
range of measurement. There is nothing to do. When the
power comes within range, the measurement update will
resume.
