CKW Relay Option Kit EN-1
INTRODUCTION
Two optional Relay Kits are available for CKW Series Indicators and Scales. The
AC Relay Kit is used for controlling up to three external AC circuits. The DC Relay
Kit is used for controlling up to three external DC circuits. Each solid-state relay
output is equivalent to a single pole, single throw switch (SPST). Each relay
circuit is protected by a replaceable fuse.
When installed, system software allows the relays to be programmed in a variety
of ways. Optional set ups include: Normally open or normally closed simulation,
on-off or on-hold sequencing, simultaneous, break-before-make (BBM) or make-
before-break (MBB) contact switching.
Each kit contains a PC board, 2 cables, 6 mounting screws, metal cover, cable tie
and this instruction manual.
BASIC APPLICATIONS
With the Relay Option board installed, external devices can be coordinated to
work with the system’s bar graph display.
• Relay Out 0 corresponds to the Yellow Under Bar graph section.
• Relay Out 1 corresponds to the Green Accept Bar graph section.
• Relay Out 2 corresponds to the Red Over Bar graph section.
Applications include: driving external Over/Accept/Under displays, motor controls
for semi-automatic filling systems, sorting systems, interfacing to industrial PLC
systems, etc. The Relay outputs can also be used as slave relays to drive higher
power relays in larger systems.
CAUTION: Read all safety warnings before installing, making
connections, or servicing the Relay option PCB. Failure to comply
with these warnings could result in personal injury and/or property
damage. Retain all instructions for future reference.

INSTALLATION
CAUTION:The installation and wire connections to the Relay option
board should only be done by authorized and qualified personnel,
such as an Electrician.
WARNING: BEFORE MAKING CONNECTIONS TO THE RELAY TERMINALS,
POWER OFF THE SYSTEM AND REMOVE ALL EXTERNAL AC POWER
CONNECTIONS. IF THE SYSTEM CONTAINS AN OPTIONAL RECHARGEABLE
BATTERY SYSTEM, BE SURE THAT THE ON/ZERO
OFF
BUTTON ON THE

WARNING: ELECTRICAL SHOCK HAZARD EXISTS WITHIN THE HOUSING. THE
HOUSING SHOULD ONLY BE OPENED BY AUTHORIZED AND QUALIFIED
PERSONNEL. REMOVE ALL POWER CONNECTIONS TO THE UNIT BEFORE
OPENING. IF THE UNIT CONTAINS AN OPTIONAL RELAY CONTROL BOARD,
ADDITIONAL AC OR DC POWER CONNECTIONS MAY EXIST WITHIN THE HOUSING.
• Mount the PC board to the rear plate as shown in Figure 1 using 4
of the small screws supplied.
Cable Installation
• Connect the long cable supplied with the kit to connector J10 on the main PC
board. Connect the other end of the cable to either connector at the top of the
Relay Board. (See Figure 1). Using the cable tie supplied, attach the cable
to the plastic mount at the bottom of the housing. (Other cables may already
be attached to this same mount.) If the optional RS422/485 board has been
previously installed, do not use the long cable, instead use the short cable
supplied in the kit to connect the Relay Board to the similar connector on the
RS485 board.
Relay Board Installation
Opening the Indicator Housing
• Unfasten the 4 side screws of the Indicator housing, pull the front housing
section forward.

Making External Connections to the Relays
IMPORTANT: When connecting any AC line supplied device to the Relay
Option PCB, insure that each external device utilizes a properly
grounded AC connection.
• For connections to nominal 120 VAC or 220-240 VAC systems, use only
insulated wire sets rated to the local electrical code requirements.
• The wire set used for connection to the relay option PCB should be part of a
multi-conductor cable with a smooth, round outer insulating jacket.
• Do not run more than one cable through the watertight fitting.
• Do not run other low voltage wires within the same cable set that connects
to the Relay connections.
• The overall cable diameter must be between 0.157 in. to 0.315 in.,
(4 mm to 8 mm).
• The terminal connections require wire sizes in the range of 26 to 16 AWG,
(0.14 mm2to 1.5 mm2). Wire ends are stripped to 0.25 in. (6 mm). Follow
Figure 2 to strip cable and wire ends to the correct lengths.
• The cable from the Relay terminals must be routed directly to the watertight
fitting at the left side of the Indicator housing. This is the closest fitting just
below the Relay PCB. See Figure 1.
Figure 2. Cable Preparation.
*NOTE: Install the Cable Tie after inserting the cable through the liquid-tight fitting.

Figure 3. Relay Output
Board Contact Diagram.
• Each relay output has two terminals, connect each
wire pair to be switched to each set of terminals. See
Figure 3, for a relay contact diagram.
• For DC relay boards, make sure the polarity is correct.
• The DC Relay PCB can only be used with DC circuits.
• The AC Relay PCB can only be used with AC circuits.
• After making the proper connections, tighten the
external nut of the liquid-tight connector securely
around the cable.
• Install the Relay Terminal Cover as shown in
Figure 4 using the two screws supplied.
• The relay connections provide a switch closure only, AC or DC power must be
supplied externally.
• For reference, Appendix A shows typical examples of wiring to the relays.

Reassembly
• Before re-assembly, check that the liquid-tight connector is fully tighted.
• Check that no wires or cabling will be pinched when the two housing
sections are closed.
• Lift the front housing section back into place over the rear housing section.
• Replace the 4 side screws*.
*Note: It may be necessary to apply a moderate clamping pressure to the two
housing halves while replacing the side screws. This pressure compresses a
rubber gasket and insures the proper water tight seal for the housing.
When properly installed, the Relay Option board is automatically detected by the
system’s software. Installation is confirmed during the power on display
sequence with the message “ ”.
