Global Laser Lyte-MV 2 User manual

Thank you for purchasing the Lyte-MV 2 laser diode module. This module emits a spot, line or pattern
in the visible or infrared wavelength range.
If you have any queries or require help when using the Lyte-MV 2 range please call us on +44(0)1495
212213 or contact your local representative.
The Lyte-MV 2 provides a reliable industrial light source for a wide range of machine vision applications
including triangulation, 3D inspection and alignment. It features IP67 protection, a threaded barrel and
the ability to operate from industrial voltage sources such as 24Vdc while still providing market leading
modulation features.
Available with powers up to 120mW in Red and Blue and 200mW in IR. An array of optical options includ-
ing circular and elliptical spots, uniform lines and diractive patterns. The Lyte-MV 2 also has a user ad-
justable focus control, to allow the user to optimize the focus via an external control ring. The threaded
barrel allows the user to mount the laser to bulkheads and mounting blocks while ensuring heat sink-
ing. This M18 threaded barrel makes it compatible with the majority of existing machine vision systems.
The modulation options allow the user to synchronize the output or control the power output via TTL.
A comprehensive range of accessories including mounting clamps,
rail systems, mains power supplies and laser safety and enhance-
ment glasses are also available to complement the Lyte-MV
2.
Product Overview
Lyte-MV 2
24V Digital Userguide

A: CW Mode
To operate laser in CW mode the Red ,Black, Yellow & Blue leads should be connected to the following:
Pin Lead Description Lyte-MV 2 Digital Red & IR Versions Lyte-MV 2 Digital Green Versions
1Red + Volts +5 to 30Vdc +10 to 30Vdc
2Black 0 Volts 0 Vdc
3Yellow Modulation + Vdc
4Blue Enable Leave unconnected if not being used as enable switch
B: TTL Mode
The Lyte MV 2 allows the unit to be gated on and o, or pulse-width modulated at TTL voltage levels via
the yellow control lead. A TTL high level signal turns the laser on and a TTL low level signal turns the
laser o. Frequency bandwidth is typically 500KHz (green models 300Khz). Rise Time: <0.5μs
(typical).
C. Blue Lead (Enable Switch)
An on/o switch function is available via the blue wire, which is particularly useful for safety interlocks
or enable switch’s required for laser safety systems. Applying 0V will switch the laser o whilst applying
V supply leaves the laser on.
D. Operating with a 10V PS-1
If you have purchased a Lyte-MV 2 with a 100V/240V to 10V PS-1 you will have the following items:
Lyte-MV 2 Laser
Lyte-MV 2 to PS-1 Cable
100V/240V to 10V PS-1
Main socket to PS-1 Power Lead (UK, Euro or US)
1. Connect the DC jack on the Lyte MV 2 to PS-1 cable into the DC socket on the PS-1 power supply
and screw binder connector into the connector on the end of laser.
2. Connect IEC plug to PS-1 power adaptor.
3. Plug the mains plug into a mains socket.
4. Switch on the power supply via key switch (If you have purchased a 10V PS-1 tted with a key
switch) or switch on at the mains socket.

To ensure the lifetime and the stability of the laser it is recommended that it is mounted in a suitable
heat sink/mount. The case temperature should be kept within the specied range at all times, failure
to do this could result in shortened lifetime or catastrophic failure. As a guide, laser diode lifetime
decreases by a factor of two (approx.) for every ten degree increase in operating temperature.
To assist with this requirement the Lyte-MV 2 has a threaded front barrel (M18x1) which can t to a
bulkhead or threaded hole. The direct contact of the barrel to the mount helps to ensure heat sinking
and improve laser diode lifetime. Alternatively a version of Global Laser’s heavy duty clamp which has a
thread arm is available. To further assist mounting the module is supplied with two nut’s which are
tted to the front barrel. A tool to t a 24mm nut is required for adjustment. To further improve reliability
the barrel is isolated from the laser diode supply voltage at all times.
Mounting the Lyte-MV 2 in the Heavy Duty Clamp (See drawing B)
1. Secure the clamp to a surface. There are two methods:
a. Screw an M5 stud to the bottom of the base, or
b. Remove the base by removing 2 x grub screw B with the supplied Allen key, then thread an M5
cap screw through the top of the base. Then re-attach the base to the body of the clamp.
2. Loosen Allen screw A with the supplied Allen key
3. Slide your laser into the mounting hole and then tighten Allen screw A
4. Loosen grub screw A
5. Adjust the vertical angle of your laser and then tighten grub screw A
6. Loosen 2 x grub screw B. This will allow the main body of the mount to be rotated independently of
the base
7. Adjust the horizontal angle of your laser and then tighten 2 x grub screw B
Mounting the Lyte-MV 2 in the Heavy Duty Clamp with the Magnetic Base (See drawing B&C)
1. Secure the magnetic base to the Heavy Duty Clamp
a. Screw the stud on the top of the magnetic base into the centre hole at the bottom of the
Heavy Duty Clamp
2. Remove the keeper from the magnetic base and place on a ferrous surface
3. Loosen Allen screw A with the supplied Allen key
4. Slide your laser into the mounting hole and then tighten Allen screw A
5. Loosen grub screw A
6. Adjust the vertical angle of your laser and then tighten grub screw A
7. Loosen 2 x grub screw B. This will allow the main body of the mount to be rotated independently of
the base
8. Adjust the horizontal angle of your laser and then tighten 2 x grub screw B

Focus Adjustment
The laser will have been focused and tested at the nominal working distance requested at the time of
order. If you did not specify a distance or were unsure at the time of order it will be focused at 300mm
(11.81 inches).
Should you need to adjust the focus (alter the spot size line thickness/pattern thickness) please follow
the simple instructions below:
Turn the focusing control (brass knurled section) at the middle of the laser (see diagram A) clockwise /
anti clockwise until the desired focus is achieved. As a rule of thumb if you wish the focus to be at
shorter distance from the laser than it is currently set to turn the focus control anti-clockwise. If you
wish the focus to be at longer distance from the laser then it is currently set to turn the focus control
clockwise.
The Lyte MV 2 is protected against dust and uid with an ingress protection (IP) rating of 67.
The protection level is dened IEC60529 as below:
Please Note: Liquids are dened as water. Oil or chemicals may require further protection.
It is recommended that when the Lyte-MV 2 is not in use the supplied protective cap is placed over
the optics to reduce the risk of the being contaminate by dirt.
If the laser pattern becomes fuzzy or unclear, please check the following:
1. Check the laser is in focus
2. Verify the protective window on the front of the laser is clean
If the window is contaminated, the lens can be cleaned with an optical cloth or cleaning kit.
IP First Number Protection against solid objects
6 Totally protected against dust
IP Second Number Protection against liquids
7Protected against the eects of immersion between 15cm and 1 meter
