Detecting Moisture in Insulation:
Use the BD-10 withthe #21-E Electrode and#608insulated pins to detect moisture in insulation. These pinsare insulated,
except at the tips.Only the uninsulatedtips makecontact withthe material, providinginformationas tothedepth at whichmoisture
is present.
Procedure:
Drill two 4.8mm (3∕16”) diameterholes, one inchapart through the siding.
Using the #21-E, insertthe#608 contact pins into the holes so thatyou make contactwith the insulation.
Press the read button andread the reference scale .Take readings atvarious depths ofpenetrationto
determine the location of moisture.
Fill holes with putty at the conclusion ofthe test.
Meters are not calibrated toread the percentageof moisture contentin theinsulation.Instead, meterreadings provide a qualitative
indication ofthe presence of moisture. The metermayalso help identifythe pattern of distribution to helpyou determine ifmoisture
is due to condensationorleakage.
The presence ofmoisturein insulating materialgreatlyreduces its insulatingproperties.Ifthe insulatingmaterial absorbsmoisture,
water willdisplacetheairinthe material.
Water also transmits heatata fasterrate than air, thus reducingtheefficiency of the insulation.
Sidewalls androof insulation pickup moisturebecause ofleaks inthe roof or structuraldefects in the sidewalls whichallowstorm
water to be forcedin duringhigh wind.
Duringperiods ofcoldweather, vapor will condenseas it approaches the colderareanearthe outside walls, and resultingmoisture
willremain trappedinthe insulation.
