Quick Start Guide
Getting Started
This guide shows you step-by-step how to set up your Multi-Tech
MT5600ZDX or MT5600ZDXV modem. For detailed i formatio o how
to i stall, test, a d use your modem, see the complete User Guide o
CD-ROM provided with your modem.
What You Will Need
Before starti g, make sure you have everythi g you will eed.
We supply
A MT5600ZDX data/fax modem or a MT5600ZDXV voice/data/
fax modem
A DC power tra sformer
O e RJ11 pho e cable
A pri ted Quick Start Guide (this ma ual)
A system CD co tai i g modem drivers, commu icatio s software
(Pho eTools), a d a complete User Guide
Four vi yl gripper feet for the bottom of the modem
You supply
A computer with a available serial port. The processor speed
should be at least 75 MHz i order to take full adva tage of the
ZDXVs telepho y features.
A shielded RS-232 serial cable with a male DB-25 co ector o
o e e d a d a co ector to match your computers serial port o
the other e d.
A earby AC power outlet
A earby pho e jack
(Optio al) If you wa t speakerpho e fu ctio s alo g with the
ability to record sou d or .WAV files through the sou d card at
the same time, you will eed:

Safety Warnings
Use this product o ly with UL- a d CUL-listed computers.

Avoid usi g a pho e (other tha a cordless type) duri g a electrical
storm; there is a risk of electrical shock from light i g.
Do ot use a pho e i the vici ity of a gas leak.
To reduce the risk of fire, use o ly 26 AWG or larger telepho e li e
cord.

Tur off your computer. Place the modem i a co ve ie t locatio , a d the
co ect it to your computers serial port, to the pho e li e, to AC power, a d
to your pho e.

Quick Start Guide
1. Connect t e Modem to Your PC
Plug o e e d of the RS-232 serial cable i to the RS-232 co ector o
the modem, a d plug the other e d i to a serial port co ector o
your computer, such as COM1 or COM2. You supply the RS-232
cable.
2. Connect t e Modem to t e P one Jack
Plug o e e d of the pho e cable i to the modems LINE jack a d the
other e d i to a pho e wall jack. The pho e cable is i cluded with
your modem.
Note: The LINE jack is ot i tercha geable with the PHONE jack. Do ot
plug the pho e i to the LINE jack or the li e cable i to the PHONE jack.
3. (Optional) Connect t e Modem to t e P one
For voice-o ly calls, plug a pho e i to the modems PHONE jack.
4. Connect t e Modem to t e AC Power Outlet
Plug the DC power tra sformer i to a AC power outlet or power strip.
Plug the other e d i to the POWER jack o the modem. The DC
power tra sformer is i cluded with your modem.
Note: Use o ly the DC power tra sformer supplied with the modem.
Use of a y other tra sformer voids the warra ty a d ca damage the
modem.
5. Power on Test
Test the modem by tur i g it o (a o -off switch is located o the
side pa el). Whe you apply power, the modem performs a
diag ostic self-test. The 56 i dicator lights, a d if a termi al program
is ru i g, the TR i dicator also lights. If this does ot happe , check
that the power switch is o , the power supply is solidly co ected,
a d the AC outlet is live. If these measures do ot work, see the
chapter o Troubleshooting i the complete User Guide.

For voice mail or speakerpho e applicatio s, plug a u amplified
micropho e i to the MIC jack o the side of the modem. The
micropho e should have a stereo 1/8-i ch mi i plug. Do ot use a
mo opho ic micropho e.
3. Connect t e Speaker
For speakerpho e or voice mail applicatio s, use a 1/8-i ch-plug
male-to-male stereo patch cord to co ect the SPKR jack o the side
of the modem to the LINE IN jack o your sou d card. If your sou d
card does ot have a LINE IN jack, use its MIC jack. The stereo male-
to-male patch cord ca be purchased at a local PC retail store.
If you do ot have a sou d card, you ca plug a amplified speaker
directly i to the SPKR jack.

Installing the Modem Driver
If you use Wi dows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/Xp, you must i stall the modem
driver as described here. If you use a other operati g system, see the
User Guide. Whe operati g the modem u der Wi dows 95/98/Me/
2000/Xp, the modem driver ca be i stalled by usi g the Plug-a d-Play
feature. Follow the 4-step procedure below. For Wi dows NT, which
does ot support Plug-a d-Play, follow the 8-step procedure o the ext
page.
Modem Driver Installation for Windows 95/98/Me/2000/Xp
1. Make sure your modem is co ected properly, a d the tur o
your computer. Wi dows should detect your ew modem a d
ope the Install New Modem wizard.
Note: If Wi dows ca ot fi d a modem, your modem may be
tur ed off, it may be plugged i to the wro g co ector o your
computer, or the serial cable may be faulty. See No e of the
LEDs Light Whe the Modem Is Tur ed O a d The Modem
Does Not Respo d to Comma ds i the Troubleshooti g
chapter of the User Guide.
2. I sert the system CD-ROM, a d the click OK.

Modem Driver Installation for Windows NT
1. Make sure your modem is co ected properly, a d the tur o
your computer. Wi dows should detect your ew modem a d
ope the Install New Modem wizard.
Note: If Wi dows ca ot fi d a modem, your modem may be tur ed
off, it may be plugged i to the wro g co ector o your computer,
or the serial cable may be faulty. See No e of the LEDs Light Whe

Comma ds i the Troubleshooti g chapter of the User Guide.
2. I the Install New Modem wizard, select Dont detect my modem;
I will select it from a list, a d the click Next. A dialog box with
a list of ma ufacturers a d a list of modem models appears.
3. I sert the system CD-ROM a d the click Have Disk.
4. I the Install from Disk dialog box, select the drive that the CD is
i , a d the click OK.
5. A list of modems appears. Select your modem a d click Next.
6. Select the port that the modem is co ected to, a d the click Next.
7. Wi dows i stalls a d co figures the modem.
8. Click Finish to exit.
Quick Start Guide
Loading Data ommunications Software
MultiTech i cludes a data commu icatio s software package o the prod-
uct CD shipped with your modem. I ge eral, however, the modem will work
with most data commu icatio s software packages. Data commu icatio s
software gives the user access to lower-level comma ds that gover (at a
detailed tech ical level) how the modem operates, that is, how the modem
ha dles i comi g a d outgoi g data streams, etc.
Load the software as you would a y Wi dows applicatio program. Duri g
i stallatio u der Wi dows NT/2000/Xp, a advisory scree may appear
sayi g FAX capture driver i stallatio a d causi g a delay i the i stalla-
tio . Be aware that this is ormal a d the i stallatio process has ot failed
or stalled. Simply wait a few mome ts u til this scree disappears.
