Release Notes for HP Common 3D Graphics for HP-UX 11.23 (June 2003)

on IPF-Based Systems.

1. ANNOUNCEMENTS

These Release Notes contain information that is common to the Xlib and HP

OpenGL graphics application programming interfaces (APIs). For specific

information on each API, see their respective Release Notes. The on-line

Release Notes for the 3D graphics APIs are:

2. WHAT'S IN THIS VERSION?

The 3D graphics software released with the HP-UX 11.23 Operating Environment

June 2003 release is the next release to support 3D graphics APIs on IPF-based

systems. The only 3D API that is supported is OpenGL. The following features

are included with this release:

* Support of New Devices: ATI FireGL X1 and ATI FireGL Z1

* Support of X11: Xserver (XFree86-based)

Note: 2D/3D Distributed Single Logical Screen (SLS/d) for OpenGL is not

supported with this release.

4. COMPATIBILITY AND INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS

Software Requirements

=====================

The 3D graphics APIs shipped with the HP-UX 11.23 Operating Environment (June

2003 release) require the use of the HP-UX 11.23 Operating Environment (June

2003 release) and the corresponding X11 release.

Hardware Requirements

=====================

With this release, Hewlett-Packard 3D graphics APIs are supported with the

following bit-mapped graphics devices:

* ATI FireGL X1

* ATI FireGL Z1

For Graphics Information

========================

You can use the "graphinfo" command to obtain information about the bit-mapped

graphics device(s) attached to your HP-UX IPF system. It reports the following

types of information:

* name of device (for example: ATI FireGL X1)

* frame buffer configuration

* hardware features (acceleration, hardware Z-buffer)

* additional information related to HP's 3D graphics APIs

For detailed information about supported graphics configurations -- HP-UX

computers combined with bit-mapped graphics devices -- consult the "Graphics

Administration Guide."

For additional information about programming applications for these devices,

consult the documentation for the 3D graphics API that you are using.

Disk Space Requirements

=======================

Use the “swinstall” command to determine the necessary and available disk

space for the 3D graphics API you wish to install.

5. PATCHES AND FIXES IN THIS VERSION

None.

6. SOFTWARE AVAILABILITY IN NATIVE LANGUAGES

Localization is not planned for any 3D graphics API or the corresponding

documentation with this release.

8. ADDENDA -- ADDITIONAL GRAPHICS INFORMATION

Graphics APIs

=============

Hewlett-Packard supports the HP OpenGL 3D graphics API libraries for use with

the HP-UX 11.23 Operating Environment June 2003 release.

For information about enhancements and changes to the current version of HP

OpenGL (as shipped with this release), consult the separate Release Notes

document for HP OpenGL:

/opt/graphics/OpenGL/ReleaseNotes

(If you have not installed the optional HP OpenGL product on your system, this

file will not be present.)

ATI FireGL X1 and ATI FireGL Z1 Information

============================================

The ATI FireGL X1 graphics device is HP's high level 3D graphics product. The

ATI FireGL Z1 graphics device is HP’s mid-range level 3D graphics product.

These device are supported on the following HP workstations:

* zx2000

* zx6000

The attributes of the ATI FireGL X1 and FireGL Z1 devices include:

* 8 Overlay planes

* 48 Image planes (for 24-plane single buffered or 24/24 double-buffered

rendering)

* 1 Image plane color map and an infinite number of overlay plane color maps

* Support of the Depth 8 PseudoColor Overlay visual

* Support of the Depth 24 TrueColor Image visual

Discontinuance Information

==========================

Hewlett-Packard evaluates the capabilities and device support of HP-UX on an

ongoing basis. There are no graphics devices being discontinued with this

release.

Threads Information

===================

HP OpenGL supports Level 1b threads for this release. This means HP OpenGL can

be used in a threaded application, but all OpenGL calls must reside in a

single thread. Other threads can be used for computations, etc.

Note that using OpenGL graphics in a Kernel threaded application requires that

the application link with libpthread.sl (not the archived version,

libpthread.a). Also, note that OpenGL libraries are not cancel safe or fork

safe.
