Oticon Amigo R5 bodyworn with
Cochlear Freedom
You will need:
•An Oticon Amigo R5 bodyworn receiver
• A radio aid lead complete with filter (part
number DCFM15 – available from
Connevans, 600 or 900mm long). Do
not use an accessory adaptor cable
even if it fits.
What to do:
1. Plug the lead into the output jack of the receiver.
. Turn off the Freedom processor.
3. Put the other end of the lead into the socket at the base of the
Freedom processor, beneath the flap. *Be very careful
inserting this plug. First look at the plug which has a quarter
‘missing’. You must line this up with the equivalent corner in
the socket. You need pretty good eyesight! It is possible to
put this in the wrong way and break the socket, so great care
needs to be taken.
4. Turn on both the transmitter and receiver and make sure that
both units are showing the same channel.

5. Turn on the processor which will automatically detect the
presence of the receiver. Sound can now be heard through the
headpiece microphone and FM combined.
6. If you don’t switch off the processor, you will need to depress
both arrow bottoms together twice to toggle through M, T and
then A. The letters A (which indicate that an accessory has
been recognized) should show briefly on the screen when this
happens.
To listen to microphone only press both the increase and
decrease buttons together repeatedly until just an ‘M’ appears
on the screen.
To re-engage FM, press both buttons repeatedly until ‘ A’
flashes on the screen and the ‘M’ remains there.
7. It is good practice to set the Tx vol on the Amigo R5 receiver at
minimum initially and then adjust it upwards until an
appropriate listening level is reached.
8. Perform a listening test.
Troubleshooting
It is important to hold a supply of spare parts to check the
system.
To listen to the signal from the receiver,
you need the Freedom monitor earphones
(available from Connevans part number
DCEARMONFR or from Cochlear part
number Z6083 ) Unplug the direct input
lead from the processor and plug the
earphones into the socket on the base of
the processor. You can then plug the direct input lead
into the socket on the headphones and listen to the
signal.
Listening through the earphones does not tell you what the
child is hearing but it will give you a good idea about the
quality of the signal.

Batteries
Check the battery symbols. If it is losing charge quicker than
expected, it may be a faulty battery so you need to check the
batteries for damage, try replacing them or recharge them where
appropriate.
On the transmitter
Is there an aerial? An aerial is incorporated into the lead of the lapel
microphone so, if this is in use, you don’t need to use another one.
If using the internal microphone, make sure that an aerial has been
plugged in. A flashing alert will indicate if there is a problem with the
aerial. Try wiggling the aerial or trying a spare.
Check the lapel microphone. Intermittent sound can be caused by an
intermittent microphone lead. A flashing alert will indicate this.
Check it by trying a spare.
If the integral microphone cover is blocked this will cause the sound
to be muffled. Check it by using an external microphone.
On the receiver
Check that the volume has not been turned down.
Check that there is a steady red L D light on the receiver. If the
light is flashing, the FM system is not working correctly.
Check the volume
If the child complains about the signal, it is worth checking the
volume. This can be done by checking the signal in the way
described above and then adjusting the ‘Tx vol’ on the receiver until
an appropriate level is reached, starting at the minimum volume and
working upwards
Try changing the channel if there is poor sound quality or
interference.
Have you checked?
•Are the FM transmitter and receiver on the same channel?
•Are the cables on the FM transmitter or receiver frayed or
kinked?
•Has the transmitting distance been exceeded?
•Do the batteries for the FM transmitter and or the receiver
need replacing?
•Is the microphone on the transmitter working or is it muted?
•Has the processor program been set up for FM?
•Have you observed areas in the classroom that can cause dead
spots in the transmission by checking with the FM system
yourself?
•Have you tried reducing the volume or gain on the FM receiver?
•Have you tried a different FM channel?
•Have you changed the cable?
