2. Material information::

2.1. Material: Balsa wood (Tropical wood, soft and light))

Working: Cut with a modelling knife

Joining: Use PVA or other non solvent glue

Working: Cut to length with a fine saw, use PUK range or similar

Finish: Varnish (spray);

Stain (water soluable then varnish)

Working: Bend with combination pliers, cut to length with side cutters

3. Tools:

Sawing: PUK saws (see cat) for small round stock and strip wood

Note ! Clamp all the work

Cutting: Use a modelling knife

Note!! Take care when using sharp knives, use a safety ruler!!

Finishing: Use a sanding block for all flat surfaces

6. Instructions

General notes:

The glued joints must be allowed to dry thoroughly otherwise they may warp or gradually come apart.

Whilst some of the parts are drying other work can be undertaken.

Balsa wood and foam sheet can be glued together with white glue. Other glues must be tried on the

Styropor / Depron first as any containing a solvent will attack the foam. Glue the glasspaper to the

block, use PVA, leave to dry. Tick off the steps as you go along then you will not miss anything.

Use mapping pins instead of normal sewing pins, as these bend too easily.

6.1 Wings:

In order that the finished outcome is successful the building steps are shown in detail

6.1.1 Remove the plans for the wings (see pages 17/19/21/23) and sellotape them together.

6.1.2 Sellotape the plans for the right hand wing to the building board

6.1.3 Cover over the drawings of the leading edge and trailing edge strips on the plan with a length of sellotape.

This stops balsa strips from being stuck to the plans whilst gluing (sk1, shaded areas)

6.1.4 Cut the leading and trailing edge strips (19 +20) to 410mm long (Roll the strips under a modelling knife)

6.1.5 Fix one foam wing (depron 18) over the plan with mapping pins.

Insert the pins at an angle!

6.1.6 Fix the leading edge on the building board with crossed over pins. Apply a bead of glue along the strip (sk2)

The glue should down over the edge.

6.1.7 Glue the leading edge (19) on to the Depron wing (18) hold with pins (insert the pins at an angle) Sk3

6.1.8 Glue the trailing edge (20) in position as in 1.6+1.7. Leave to dry for two hours!!!!!

6.1.9 The wings are marked RF = Right front and LF=left front

6.1.10 Remove the right hand wing carefully from the plans, use a modelling knife.

6.1.11 Lay sellotape (19 x 450mm) with its sticky side uppermost on to the building board and fix with pins.

Place the leading edge of the wing along the middle of the sellotape and rock it forwards and then back-

wards, finally forwards once more, so that the sellotape covers the leading edge (sk4).

Carry out the same process on the trailing edge.

6.1.12 Cut along the bending lines on the underside of the wing halves. The cuts should be 1mm deep, use a mo-

delling knife (sk5) and a metal ruler.

Note!: Take care that the cuts are in the underneath of the wings!

Do not cut all the way through!!!! Remember only 1mm deep

6.1.13 Cut the ribs (21) from the pre-stamped balsa sheet and fix them to the plan with two drops of glue (Sk6)

Note: The spots of glue will be removed later. The roundest part of the rib faces forward.

6.1.14 Cut and remove a strip of sellotape from the underside of the wing aprox 5mm left and right of each rib

(Sk5), otherwise the glue will not stick at a later stage.

Note: Diagram 5 shows the left hand wing viewed from underneath!!!

6.1.15 Bend the right hand wing half over the wing ribs, press the leading edge down and pin it firmly to the

board (set the pins in at an angle Sk6) DO NOT GLUE -remove the wing again but leave the pins in positi-

on.

Note: Ensure the cut bending lines are underneath!

6.1.16 Apply glue to the top of each rib

Note: The glue must not run otherwise it will stick to the plans

6.1.17 Re-position the wing over the glued ribs with the leading edge tucked under the pin heads. Bend the wing

and anchor the trailing edge to the plan in the same way. Both the leading and trailing edges must lay flat on

the board. Leave to dry for approx 5 hours.

6.1.18 Remove the spots of glue that hold the ribs to the plans

6.1.19 Prepare the left hand wing, carry out the same way as steps 1.1

6.1.20 Clean up the outside of the wings (ribs,depron)

6.1.21 The inner end of the wings must be angled. Support one end of the wing with a scrap piece of depron (sk7)

and sand the other end as shown (Sk7)

6.1.22 When finished glue the left and right hand halves of the wing together.

Leave for approx 5 hours to dry. Clean off any excess glue that creeps out of the joint.

6.1.23 Cut out the wing joiner (25 Ext. pack) according to the diagram bend it and glue it in the middle with PVA

white glue. Leave to dry for approx half an hour.

6.1.24 Remove the wings from the board and glue the underneath joiner (24 Ext. pack) with PVA white glue.

6.1.25 Cut out the Dragonfly labels (page 25) and glue them on the wing halves (apply glue around the edges only,

not over the whole area of the paper).

6.1.26 Mount the decor strips (26) on to the wings in your own design and cut off any excess.

6.1.27 Cut out the plans (Page 25/27 sk.10) and sellotape them together. Place a drop of glue on the oval

points.

6.1.28 Press the pattern on the 410mm long depron sheet. The rear edge of the tailplane should be parallel with

the edge of the foam sheet (sk.10)

6.1.29 Cut the end rib shapes (22) from the depron, remove the paper, shape the edges and glue them to end of

he wings

6.1.30 The wing tip end strip (23) (sk.9 shaded) 2 x 5 x 140mm is made from scrap balsa (see diagram 2)

shaped and finally glued to the wing tip. Sand to final shape front and rear.

6.1.31 Fill the cut bending lines under the wings with small beads of white glue and then spread it smooth.

6.1.32 Insert the thread for the balance point (shown on plan) from underneath with a needle, knot and glue.

The wings are complete now.

6.2 Tailplane and fin TP=Tailplane TF= Tail fin

6.2.1 Cut the TP (15) and TF (16) and TF keel (17) out of the Depron sheet with a modelling knife

(use a new blade) Use a metal safety rulerfor straight lines.

Note: Cut the parts out in diagram 10. Try to cut with the grain as much as possible.

6.2.2 IInsert pins through the marked points in the tailplane these are for mounting the tailplane.

6.2.3 Remove the paper patterns from the 3mm Depron sheet and lightly round the shapes.

Note: Do not round off the bottom of the tail fin or skid.

6.2.4 Chamfer the rear edge of the tailplane (13) from a line 110mm in, down to 2mm at the edge with a glasspa-

per and block

6.2.5 Glue the tailplane boom (13) to the bottom of the tailplane (15) press together.

6.3 Assembling the wing Pylon:

6.3.1 Cut out the plans (page 29/31/33) along the lines and sellotape them together.

6.3.2 Cut out the Pylon parts (7,8/9 =10) from the pre-stamped balsa sheet. Glue them together accurately

(sk.12)

6.3.3 Leave them to dry. Mark both parts left and right (in flight direction)

6.3.4 Cut the dowels (12) to 3mm dia x 130mm long and glue them to the insides the Pylons as shown.

The arrows show the exact position.

6.3.5 Saw two 10mm rings from the card tube fuselage (1). These are parts 2 and 3.

6.3.6 Mark out the Pylon carrier position (6) on the fuselage tube (1).

6.3.7 Cut the Pylon support (6) from the pre-printed sheet and glue it to the tube (sk.13) A bead of glue in the

middle of the support is enough. The support is always the top (even when the tube is upside down ) leave

to dry.

Fix the fuselage plan (page 29) along with the tube to the building board.

6.3.8 Lay the tube (1) with the Pylon support (6) downwards, shaded line on the plan (page 29) Lay the tube exact-

ly over the plan and as shown sand off an angle of 1mm at the front end.

Note: This angle is to compensate for the turning of the propellor thrust, without it the plane will only fly

in left hand curve.

6.3.9 Turn the tube (1) through 90 degrees. The support is now horizontal Sand a 1mm angle again using a ruler

to control the amount removed.

Note: This angle is to compensate for the thrust of the propellor. without this the model will swing up
