INTRODUCTION

This service manual is

intended

to assist

you

diagnosing

conditions

which

may

develop. Electrical

component

testing

for

the

most part,

made

with

appliance

test

meter

and consists of checking

for

open

closed circuits. Mechanical checks

are

made

through

sight

and sound,

along

with

the

use of aclamp-on ammeter.

This

manual

designed

for

the

technician

who

familiar

with

the

operation

and

construction

May

tag

products.

Information

contained

this

manual

intended

for

use

qualified

service

technician,

familiar

with

proper

and

safe

procedures

followed

when

repairing

electrical

appliance.

All

tests

and

repairs

should

performed

qualified

service

technician

equipped

with

proper

tools

and

measuring

devices.

All

component

replacements

should

made

qualified

service

technician,

using

only

The

equipment

required

service

May

tag

products

depends

largely

upon

the

condition

encountered.

Locating

malfunction

will

often

require

the

use

electrical

testing

equipment

such as:

•

Appliance

Probably

the

easiest

means

testing

electrical

components

with an

Continuity

is a

complete

continuous

path

from

one

point

in an

electrical

circuit

another

point.

The

obvious

advantages

being

able

check electrical

components

and

cir-

cuits

without

power

applied

is one

the

features

the

ohmmeter.

Multiple

ranges

allow

accurate

determination

resistances

both

single

components

and

entire

circuit

paths. Resistance is

measured

"ohms".

Appliance

Test

Meter

is a

multi-

purpose

tester

combining

an AC-DC

voltage

tester

with

multi-range

ohmmeter.

APPLIANCE

TEST

METER

SET METER FOR USE

FOLLOWS:

Calibrate

meter

touching

test

probes

together

and

turning

adjusting

dial

until

meter

reads

"0"

the

ohm

scale. Recheck

cali-

bration

whenever

adjusting

dial

for

ohms

settings

changed. (Replace

battery

adjustment

will

not

bring

meter

reading

"0".)

Select

the

scale

most

easily

read

and place test

probes

on respective

terminals.

When checking aswitch,

the

reading

would

normally

either

open

closed. A

reading

70 on

the

R x 10 scale

would

for

example

be 700

ohms

resistance.

sure

the

power

has been

disconnected

before

making

resist-

ance

measurements.

Failure

will

result

damage

your

meter! Internal

batteries

provide

all

the

power

needed to make resist-

ance checks. They

should

checked at least once a

year

and

replaced as needed.

with

continuity.

Electrical

components

fall into

two

general

categories.

Loads-

Devices

that

use

consume

electricity:

Examples

heating

elements, lamps,

timer

and

solenoid

coils.

Switches

-Devices

that

control

the

supply

electricity

to the load

loads

in a

circuit.

Examples

include

door

switches,

timer

contacts,

selector

switch and

relay

contacts.

Continuity

test

"load"

devices

will

show

varying

levels

resistance

from

very

low

for

some

transformer

and

motor

windings

very

high

for

some

timer

motors

and

components

on elec-

tronic

control

boards.

Usually

it is

important

know

there

is a

path

for

current

.flow

through

device

(continuity)

than

know

the

exact

resistance (ohms)

the

device.

Continuity

tests

switches

will

show

virtually

no resistance, even

low

values

indicates

burned

dirty

contacts in a

switch.

Continuity

testing

process

elimi-

nating

those

electrical

components

involved

in a

given

function

the

appliance,

until

the

inoperative

part

found.

reviewing

the

list

possible

electrical

problems

under

given

con-

dition,

and

then

performing

appropriate

continuity

checks

the

parts

involved,

you

should

able

to locate

the

elec-

trical

component

which

inoperative.

When checking

components

circuit

paths

for

continuity,

external

wiring

should

disconnected

eliminate

false

readings

through

external

paths.

you

want

test.

testing.

ances

are

not

meant

be used as the

exact

values

determine

whether

t;omponent

should

be replaced. They

are

provided

that

you

may

have

the

resistance

you

can see

testing

components.

CLAMP-ON

AMMETER

Each

circuit

appliance

has a

"normal"

current

draw

which

is an

indi-

cation

the

performance

that

circuit.

Current

draw

levels, less

than

normal,

give

clues

malfunctions.

The clamp-on

ammeter

measures

these

currents

without

breaking

the

circuit

measuring

the

strength

the

magnetic

field

developed

around

each

conductor.

Current

is read

separating

the

con-

ductors

and

clamping

the

jaws

the

ammeter

around

each

conductor

which

current

be read.

Low

amperage

readings

indicate

problems

such as

damaged

heating

elements,

etc.

High

amperage

readings

indicate

the

unit

being

tested is

operating

under

increased

mechanical

electrical

load.

AMMETER

DRYER

There

are

two

currents

concern

in an

electric

dryer;

the

heating

element

current

and

the

drive

motor

current.

These

currents

can be meas-

ured

by use

"split

line

cord"

exten-

sion

for

the

dryer

cord

attaching

the

ammeter

the

respective

power

line

wires

the

dryer

terminal

block.

Current

measured

should

amps

the

heating

element

side

the

line,

amps

the

drive

motor

side

the

line

and

amps

the

center

neutral

line.

MOTOR TEST CORD

The

motor

test

cord

may

be used.

installed
