Installation Recommendations

For best results using the Dimension 4200 Architectural Lighting Controller, follow

these recommendations:

•Plan the system before beginning the installation.

•Test the w i ring.

•Terminate all wiring with appropriate connectors.

•Verify wiring for shorts and open circuits.

•Connect dimmer cabinets.

•Assign unique network ID numbers to stations, if they have not been assigned

at the factory

•Connect one master station, and then one remote control station at a time.

•Verify that the first D4200 can properly control the dimmers assigned to it.

•Check the proper operation of each station as it is installed when multiple

stations are involved.

If the lighting control fails or becomes sporadic, first check the wiring or

network ID.

Basic Configuration

Testing the Wiring

To assure problem-free startup, it is important to check the wiring for proper

connections, shorts and opens. The following procedure is recommended:

1Test the following wire pairs for shorts at each station location, using an

ohmmeter or other continuity tester. Verify the wire color according to the

appropriate table as you proceed .

1-2 Open

2-3 Open

3-4 Open

Note: Specified colors are for Belden 9829 cable. Other cables could be

different colors.

2Repair any short circuits before continuing.

3Install wire jumpers (not supplied) on either end of the cable run

between pins 1-2, and a separate jumper between pins 3-4.

4Retest each the following wire pairs at each connector:

1-2 Short

2-3 Open

3-4 Short

5Make any necessary repairs and remove wire jumpers before continuing.

Accessing the Second-Level Setup Menu

To access the special memories and do the installation programming, you must

use the second-level Setup menu. This erases all programming and should only

be done for initial installations. Do not proceed if your lighting controller was

programmed at the factory.

To access the second-level Setup menu:

1Press and hold the Menu/Cancel button for 10 seconds, until LEVITON

appears on the LCD display.

2Immediately release the Menu/Cancel button.

3Press and hold the Zone 4 Down button for at least 10 seconds, until

LEVITON disappears from the LCD display.

Advanced features have been added to the menu.

When you are finished using the Setup menu selections, be sure to return

to the regular menu.

To exit the second-level Setup menu:

1Press and hold the Menu/Cancel button for 10 seconds, until LEVITON

appears on the LCD display.

2Wait until the LCD display changes to MANUAL MODE.

Setting Required Configurations

You must configure these numbers in each station before any control can be

achieved:

•The Network ID (see

)

•The Zone Patch (see

Assigning a Dimmer Circuit Channel Number

)

Operate the buttons on the D4200 one at a time. Pressing two or more

buttons at once may not yield the desired result.

Checking the Version and Network ID

To display the version and ID information:

1Press the Menu/Cancel button.

2Press the Up or Down buttons until the desired menu appears

on the LCD display.

3Press the Select/Save button to select the menu.

The current version information and the Network ID are displayed in the

following format:

D4200 V1.08 ID01

Network ID

Software version number

Date and time software was built

4Press the Menu/Cancel or the Up and Down buttons to exit

this menu.

Your version number should be the same or greater than this manual. A

control station always has the latest version available at the time it was

built. Data on this screen cannot be changed.

Setting the Network ID

Each control station must have a unique ID number assigned to it. These

numbers may have been assigned during system checkout at the factory prior to

shipment. When assigned at the factory each station is labeled with its ID

number.

The network ID must be set to a unique number between 001 and 127. If two

stations have the same network ID, all stations may operate erratically and the

dimmers will not respond to any station.

Master stations and remote stations used in the same room must be

paired and their numbers bonded together so that the correct master

station responds to the mated remote station. Once this is done, they

must be installed in the same room or space. If the remote station is

mounted in another room, it will still select preset Scenes in the master

station that it is bonded to in the wrong room.

The master station and the remote stations mated to it must each have an ID

number. The remote station's ID number must be mated to the master station's

ID number to function properly in normal operation.

To set the master station ID number and the remote station ID number:

1Access the second-level Setup menu (see

2Press the Menu/Cancel button.

3Press the Up or Down buttons until EDIT NETWORK? flashes

on the LCD display.

4Press the Select/Save button to select the master station ID number.

The Network ID number flashes.

5Press the Select/Save button to select the number.

6Press the Up and Down buttons to change the value.

Note: Press

Clear

to reset the value to

000

(Network disabled). You need

to set a unique number from 001 to 127 for it to function.

7Press the Left and Right buttons to select the remote station

ID (displayed as the remote station ID number or MASTER).

The selected item flashes.

8Press the Up and Down buttons to change the value.

Note: Press

Clear

to change the value to

MASTER

when the remote ID is mated to the Network ID.)

9Press the Select/Save button to save the values.

10 Press the Menu/Cancel button to exit this menu.

11 Exit the second-level Setup menu.

The last station or dimmer cabinet on each end of the cable run must have the

terminating jumper wire in place.

The common (DCC) must be connected to earth ground at only one point

in the run. The dimmer cabinet is the most logical point.

The above diagram illustrates use of the recommended Belden 9829 cable. The

following cables can also be used:

Configuring the Dimmer Cabinets

Prior to connecting any control stations, we recommend that the dimmer cabinets

or other dimming devices be energized and set up according to the device's

installation manual, and tested.

The control stations should be connected and configured one at a time to prevent

network conflicts. Each station should be tested for proper operation before the

next station is connected.

If a station does not appear to control circuits properly after being

configured, resolve the problem before continuing.

Only the last remote device on

the run should have a jumper

between terminals 2 and 5.

Testing the Stations

Test each station by raising and lowering each zone that is assigned to a dimmer.

Check to see that control of the dimmer cabinet or other control device is correct

and smooth.

Advanced Configuration

Setting the Personality

You can set up various personalities that include different preset Scenes. For

example, a church could use one set of eight preset Scenes for Sunday church

service, and a different set of eight preset Scenes for evening choir performances.

By choosing Personality 02, the second (choir performance) set of Scenes could

be recorded without disturbing the normal Sunday church service settings.

To set the personality:

1Access the second-level Setup menu (see

2Press the Menu/Cancel button.

3Press the Up and Down buttons until SET PERSONALITY?

flashes on the LCD display.

4Press the Select/Save button.

The current Personality number flashes.

5Press the Up and Down buttons to change the value.

6Press the Select/Save button to save the value.

SET PERSONALITY?

flashes again.

7Exit the second-level Setup menu.

Clearing the Memory

If you have problems and cannot remedy the situation, you can clear the memory

and start over.

The stations have been carefully assigned at the factory. If you clear the

memory you will lose all the factory programming and have to start over

assigning numbers, dimmers, etc.

To clear the memory:

1Press and hold the Menu/Cancel button for 10 seconds, until LEVITON

appears on the LCD display.

2Immediately release the Menu/Cancel button.

3Press and hold the Master Down button until the LCD display shows

INITIALIZING DEFAULTS.

Once

LEVITON

appears on the LCD display, the memory is reset to the

factory default values.

To access an additional series of submenus:

1Access the second-level Setup menu (see

2Press the Menu/Cancel button.

3Press the Up or Down buttons until MISC. SETTINGS?

flashes on the display.

4Use the Select/Save button to select the menu.

The current submenu flashes.

5Press the Up or Down buttons to scan through the submenus.

6Press the Select/Save button to select the desired submenu.

7Make the necessary changes.

8Press the Select/Save button to save the settings.

9Exit the second-level Setup menu.
