1. Introduction
In the modern business society, communication and sharing information is
essential. Computer networks have proven to be one of the fastest methods of
communication…
Gigabit Ethernet over copper technology is a cost effective way for network
equipments to be upgraded from Fast Ethernet to Gigabit speeds. By using
standard 4-pair Category 5 copper cabling, it doesn’t need to pull expensive
ber optics cabling. This Technology will create high-speed backbone connections
between switches, servers, database and end stations.
Lantech GE-800 Gigabit Copper Switch is an ideal solution for solving traf c block
at the core of the network. It offers 8x auto-negotiation 10/100/1000Base-T
Gigabit Ethernet ports which can signi cantly improve your network’s backbone
performance. Besides, its This Switch will t into any enterprise level network to
act as an exit to the backbone switch.
Figure 1-1. The GE-800 Gigabit Copper Switch
This Switch will automatically detect the speed of the device that you plug into it to
allow you to use 10, 100 or 1000Mbps device.
Lantech GE-800 features Auto MDI/MDIX function for each port. [ In general,
MDI means connecting to another Hub or Switch while MDIX means connecting
to a workstation or PC. Therefore, Auto MDI/MDIX means that you can connect
to another Switch or workstation without changing non-crossover or crossover
cabling. ] Besides, it also features a store-and-forward switching and can
auto-learn and store source address on an 4K MAC address table.

•Ethernet Switching Technology
Ethernet Switching Technology dramatically boosted the total bandwidth of a
network, eliminated congestion problems inherent with Carrier Sense multiple
access with Collision Detection ( CSMA/CD ) protocol, and greatly reduced
unnecessary transmissions.
This revolutionized networking. First, by allowing two-way, simultaneous
transmissions over the same port ( Full-duplex ), which essentially doubled
the bandwidth. Second, by reducing the collision domain to a single
switch-port, which eliminated the need for carrier sensing. Third, by using the
store-and-forward technology’s approach of inspecting each packet to intercept
corrupt or redundant data, switching eliminated unnecessary transmission that
slow the network. By employing address-learning, which replaced the inef cient
receiving port.
Auto-negotiation regulates the speed and duplex of each port, based on the
capability of both devices. Flow-control allows transmission from a 100Mbps
node to a 10Mbps node without loss of data. Auto-negotiation and ow-control
may require disablement for some networking operations involves legacy
equipment. Disabling the auto-negotiation is accomplished by xing the speed or
duplex of a port.
Ethernet Switching Technology supplied higher performance at costs lower than
other solutions. Wider bandwidth, no congestion, and the reduction in traf c
is why switching is replacing expensive routers and inef cient hubs as the
ultimate networking solution. Switching brought a whole new way of thinking to
networking.

2. Hardware Description
This Section mainly describes the hardware of Lantech GE-800 Gigabit Copper
Switch. This Switch is an auto-negotiation 10/100/1000Mbps Ethernet RJ-45
connectors.
The physical dimensions of the GE-800 as follow
165 x 100 x 32.5 mm (L x W x H)
•Front Panel
The Front Panel of the GE-800 Gigabit Copper Switch consists of 8x
auto-negotiation 10/100/1000Mbps Ethernet RJ-45 connectors ( support
Automatic MDI/MDIX function ), and four LED-indicators (100/1000,
LNK/ACT, FDX/COL ) for each Gigabit port.

•LED Indicators
The LED Indicators gives a real-time indication of system operating
statuses. There are four LED-indicators (100/1000, LNK/ACT,
FD/COL) for each Gigabit port and one Power LED for Unit.
The following table provides descriptions of LEDs status and their meaning.
LED Status Description
Power
Blue Power On
Off Power is not connected
100/1000
Green The port is operating at the speed of 1000Mbps.
Orange The port is operating at the speed of 100Mbps.
Off No device attached or in 10Mbps mode
LNK/ACT
Green The port is connecting with the device.
Blinks The port is receiving or transmitting data.
Off No device attached.
FDX/COL
Yellow The port is operating in Full-duplex mode.
Off No device attached or in half-duplex mode .

3.Installation
This section shows the installation procedures of the switch.
Desktop Installation
Set the Switch on a suf ciently large at space with a power outlet nearby. The
surface where you put your Switch should be clean, smooth, level, and sturdy.
Make sure there is enough clearance around the Switch to allow attachment of
cables, power cord and air circulation.
•Attaching Rubber Feet
A. Make sure mounting surface on the bottom of the Switch is grease and
dust free.
B. Remove adhesive backing from your Rubber Feet.
•Power On

C. Apply the Rubber Feet to each corner on the bottom of the Switch. These
footpads can prevent the Switch from shock/vibration.
Connect the cord of power adapter to the power socket on the rear panel of the
Switch. The other side of power cord connects to the power outlet. The power
adapter supply in the GE-800 Gigabit Copper Switch works with DC in 12V/1.3A
Check the power indicator on the front panel to see if power is properly supplied.

4.Network Application
This section provides you one sample of network topology in which the GE-800
Gigabit Copper Switch is used. In general, the GE-800 Gigabit Copper Switch is
designed to be used as a high-bandwidth backbone switch.
You can use the GE-800 Gigabit Copper Switch to connect servers, switches,
workstation, and PCs ( basically, the Gigabit 1000Base-T NIC has installed into
the PC ) to each other by connecting these devices directly to the Switch. The
Switch automatically learns node address, which are subsequently used to lter
and forward all traf c based on the destination address.
Backbone Switch
For enterprise networks where large data broadcast are constantly processed, this
switch is an ideal suitable for departmental switches to connect to the Core Switch.
All ports can connect to departmental switches, and the departmental switches
can be connected to the GE-800 Gigabit Copper Switch. Then all the devices in
this network can communicate with each other. Connecting servers to the Core
Switch allow each end station to access the server’s data.

Switch act as a Core Switch
This switch is an ideal solution for backbone connectivity. In the above example,
servers, department switches, and workstation are directly connected to the Core
Switch, GE-800 Gigabit Copper Switch.
