The EDA-8102 Electric Damper Actuator provides

clockwise and counterclockwise proportional control of

dampers and mounts directly on the damper drive

shaft, eliminating the need for costly and complicated

linkage combinations.

The mechanically limited torque output of 100 in·lb

provides long actuator life, protection of the controlled

equipment, and minimal setup and calibration time.

The EDA-8102 Electric Damper Actuator operates on

24 VAC power. It can be ordered with clockwise or

counterclockwise return to normal.

pplication Overview

The EDA-8102 is designed to regulate control air

dampers in HVAC systems. Typical applications

include:

●positioning of D-1300 Series Dampers

●outdoor air, return air, or exhaust dampers

●face and bypass control

●blade positioning for variable volume fans

Refer to damper manufacturer’s information to properly

size the damper and actuator. Return to normal

actuators are recommended for use with outdoor air

dampers.

The EDA-8102 Electric Damper Actuator provides a

stall torque output of 100 in·lb with proportional control

of dampers. It can also be used in a variety of other

applications at 80 in·lb continuous load.

The EDA-8102 is used on dampers having externally

accessible 10 to 12 mm (0.394 to 0.472 inch) square

or 7/16 to 1/2 inch (11 to 12.5 mm) round shafts.

It is compatible with Johnson Controls D-1300

Dampers as a direct mount actuator. The EDA-8102

housing has additional mounting slots to aid adaptation

to unusual applications. Several kits are available to

solve virtually any mounting situation.

The EDA-8102 spring return actuator drives the

damper through a full stroke cycle of 90 degrees in 180

seconds. The spring return provides 100 in·lb of

torque to return the damper blades to a normal position

upon loss of power.

Note: The spring return feature is intended only as a

safety feature to drive the actuator during a

power interruption. Continuous use of the

spring return during normal operation shortens

the life of the actuator.

In a typical proportional application, depending on how

the actuator is configured during installation, either a

change in voltage, current, or resistive input initiates

rotation. The damper blades rotate to a position

proportional to the input signal. The actuator holds its

position when change in signal is balanced by the

internal feedback potentiometer.

When no control signal is present, the actuator returns

to its electrical zero position.

When no 24 VAC power is present, the spring return

drives the actuator to the mechanical limit. This will

drive the damper blades to an open or closed position

(clockwise or counterclockwise, based on model

selection).

Dimensions

Note: The actuator requires a minimum damper shaft

length of four inches from the mounting

surface. When determining shaft length,

consideration has to be given to channel

depth, insulation, etc. Refer to the following

dimensional drawings.

Before starting the job, obtain the damper installation

information for the location to use as a reference when

mounting the actuator.

If access to the damper shaft is limited, or internal

mounting is required, mount the actuator remotely by

installing a six inch long, 1/2 inch diameter rod into the

coupler and use linkage accessories shown in the

Damper Accessory Kits

Mounting

CAUTIONS:

●Follow NEC and local electrical codes.

●Disconnect power supplies.

●Observe the ranges and limitations found in

Specifications.

●Do not install the actuator in applications

where its failure could result in personal injury

and/or loss of property.

●Do not install if explosive vapors, corrosive

vapors, or escaping gases will be present.

●Add protective control devices, as needed, to

prevent undesirable system failure modes.

Note: Use of the actuator’s top and bottom center

mounting slots with the isolation grommets is

the preferred mounting arrangement when

using shafts 10 mm (0.472 inch) square or

7/16 inch (11 mm) round or larger. If the duct

or wall is less than 16 gauge (0.06 inch or

1.5 mm), use the Universal Mounting Bracket

(D-3153-105).

When using the blade pin extension, follow installation

procedures packaged with the product.

Standard Mounting

The EDA-8102 is not position sensitive and can be

mounted in any convenient orientation on a duct or wall

that is 16 gauge (0.06 inch or 1.5 mm) or thicker as

long as the drive shaft is perpendicular to the mounting

surface of the actuator.

Because of the spring return, the EDA-8102 gear

release lever is not operational.

1. Position the actuator onto the blade pin extension

so that the actuator sits against the duct as shown

in Figure 4.

Note: The bottom center mounting hole looks the

same as the top mounting hole illustrated in

Figure 4.

2. Mark the location of the actuator’s top and bottom

mounting slots on the duct or wall.

3. Remove the actuator and coupler and set aside.

4. Drill two 5/32 inch (4 mm) holes in the duct or wall

at the marked locations.

5. Slide the actuator and coupler onto the pin

extension.

6. Secure the actuator to the wall or duct with the

screws and isolation grommets included in the kit.

Note: Be careful not to drive the screws into the

damper linkage.

7. Tighten the two square-head screws on the

actuator coupler.

1. Insert a screwdriver under the edge of the plastic

cover and carefully pry off the cover as shown in

Figure 5.

2. Insert the conduit and wires from the controller

through one of the three conduit openings.

3. Install the black plugs in the other two openings.

4. Connect the leads to Terminal Block 1 (TB1) or

Terminal Block 2 (TB2) as required for the input

signal to be used. See Figure 7 for general

location and designations or refer to Figures 21,

23, or 24 for specific terminals.

rotation will be opposite the information shown.

Note: Do not use potentiometer controllers in high

noise environments or with long cable lengths.

The EDA-8102 is factory set for:

●direct acting

●90 degrees of rotation

●control signal of 1 to 9 VDC

If rotation and control signals are set to the desired

configuration as received from the factory, follow these

steps to verify operation after all wiring connections

have been completed:

1. Verify that jumper W1 matches the direction and

W2 matches the control signal that will be used.

See Figure 16 for locations and Table 1 for

settings.

2. Apply power to the unit.

3. Refer to the controller’s manual for directions on

checking out a newly installed device.

4. Use the controller to drive the actuator fully

clockwise and counterclockwise.

5. Verify that the damper blades fully open and close.

operation by returning to the following section.

Changing Amount of Rotation

This procedure is performed to reduce the amount of

rotation from 90 degrees or return the amount of

rotation to 90 degrees.

Note: This procedure alters the input signal

calibration.

Prior to setting direct or reverse action, turn the

potentiometers identified in Figure 17 to the following

positions:

3. Connect a jumper from terminal IN (TB1) to

terminal +15 V (TB2) as shown in Figure 19.

4. With the 24 VAC input properly wired to terminals

AC and COM (TB1), apply power and the actuator

will rotate clockwise until the mechanical limit is

reached.

5. After the actuator has reached the mechanical

limit, incrementally adjust R37 counterclockwise

until the actuator rotates to the desired electrical

end stop for clockwise rotation.

Note: If R36 and R37 remain turned fully clockwise,

they will have no effect on the actuator

operation. The actuator will drive to the

mechanical limit.

6. Remove power to the unit and then remove the

jumper from terminals IN (TB1) and +15V (TB2).

7. Apply power and the actuator will rotate

counterclockwise until the mechanical limit is

reached.

8. After the actuator has reached the mechanical

limit, incrementally turn R36 counterclockwise until

the actuator rotates to the desired electrical end

stop for counterclockwise rotation.

9. Remove power to the unit and then connect the

jumper from terminals IN (TB1) and +15V (TB2).

Verify that the actuator is rotating full stroke to the

proper electrical end stops. Minor adjustments

may be necessary

10. Perform the appropriate input calibration procedure

for the signal being used:

Reverse Acting

1. Verify that power is turned off.

2. Move jumper W1 to the

3. Connect a jumper from terminal IN (TB1) to

terminal +15 V (TB2) as shown in Figure 19.

4. With the 24 VAC input properly wired to terminals

AC and COM (TB1), apply power and the actuator

will rotate counterclockwise until the mechanical

limit is reached.

5. After the actuator has reached the mechanical

limit, incrementally adjust R36 counterclockwise

until the actuator rotates to the desired electrical

end stop for counterclockwise rotation.

Note: If R36 and R37 are turned fully clockwise, they

have no effect on the actuator operation. The

actuator will drive to the mechanical limits.

6. Remove power to the unit and then remove the

jumper from terminals IN (TB1) and +15V (TB2).

7. Apply power and the actuator will rotate clockwise

until the mechanical limit is reached.

8. After the actuator has reached the mechanical

limit, incrementally adjust R37 counterclockwise

until the actuator rotates to the desired electrical

end stop for clockwise rotation.

9. Remove power to the unit and then connect the

jumper from terminals IN (TB1) and +15V (TB2).

Verify that the actuator is rotating full stroke to the

proper electrical end stops. Minor adjustments

may be necessary.

10. Perform the appropriate input calibration procedure

for the signal being used:

Input Voltage

This procedure is performed after changing direction of

rotation or to change from the factory set 1 to 9 VDC

control input signal to another VDC input range.

Note: This procedure does not change the electrical

end of stroke limits.

1. Verify that power is turned off.

4. Verify that controller wiring is complete and apply

24 VAC to terminals AC and COM (TB1).

5. Apply the minimum (direct acting) or maximum

(reverse acting) input control voltage to the

actuator to terminals IN and COM (TB1). The

actuator will rotate fully counterclockwise and stop

when it reaches the electrical end stop.

6. Turn R39 counterclockwise until the actuator starts

to rotate clockwise.

7. After the actuator stops moving, turn R39

clockwise in very small increments until the

actuator returns to the counterclockwise electrical

end stop.

8. Apply the maximum (direct acting) or minimum

(reverse acting) input control voltage to the

actuator to terminals IN and COM (TB1). The

actuator will rotate fully clockwise and stop when it

reaches the electrical end stop.

Note: There should be at least 2.5 VDC difference

between the minimum and maximum input

signals.

9. Turn R35 clockwise until the actuator starts to

rotate counterclockwise.

10. After the actuator stops moving, turn R35

counterclockwise in very small increments until the

actuator returns to the electrical end stop.

11. Verify that the actuator is working properly by

varying the input voltage throughout the entire

range and allowing the actuator to complete at

least one cycle. Minor adjustments of R35 and

R39 may be necessary.

12. Install the plastic cover and procedure is

completed.

Current Mode

This procedure is performed only if the desired action

is to change the control input signal to a 0 to 20 mA

current input signal.

Note: This procedure does not change the electrical

end of stroke limits.

1. Verify that power is turned off.

4. Verify that wiring is complete and apply 24 VAC to

terminals AC (TB1) and COM (TB1).

5. Apply the minimum (direct acting) or maximum

(reverse acting) input current to the actuator to

terminals AUXIN (TB2) and COM (TB1). The

actuator will rotate fully counterclockwise and stop

when it reaches the electrical end stop.

6. Turn R39 counterclockwise until the actuator starts

to rotate clockwise.

7. After the actuator stops moving, turn R39

clockwise in very small increments until the

actuator reaches the electrical end stop.

8. Apply the maximum (direct acting) or minimum

(reverse acting) input current to the actuator to

terminals AUXIN (TB2) and COM (TB1). The

actuator will rotate fully clockwise and stop when it

reaches the electrical end stop.

9. Turn R35 clockwise until the actuator starts to

rotate counterclockwise.

10. After the actuator stops moving, turn R35

counterclockwise in very small increments until the

actuator reaches the electrical end stop.

11. Verify that the actuator is working properly by

varying the input current throughout the entire

range and allowing the actuator to complete at

least one cycle. Minor adjustments of R35 and

R39 may be necessary.

12. Install the plastic cover and procedure is

completed.

Slidewire

This procedure is performed only if the desired action

is to change the control input signal to a slidewire

control input signal.

Note: Slidewire input should not be used in high

noise environments or with long cable lengths.

Note: This procedure does not change the electrical

end of stroke limits.

varying the input resistance throughout the entire

range and allowing the actuator to complete at

least one cycle. Minor adjustments to R35 and

R39 may be necessary.

12. Install the plastic cover and procedure is

completed.
