THOUGHTS

About

This

Book

This

book

gives

you

short,

clear

answers

your

questions

about

the

95LX

Palmtop

PC.

does

not

replace

the

User’s

Guide

that

came

with

the

machine.

Rather,

itis

companion

book,

“a

pocket

guide.”

The

User’s

Guide

documents

each

command

the

machine—helpful

reference,

but

not

much

for

prioritizing

information.

contrast,

this

book

distills

out

answers

and

anticipate

your

difficulties,

that,

for

common

topics,

you

need

not

the

User’s

Guide.

About

Your

Palmtop

What

Cannot

The

Palmtop

real

PC—roughly

equivalent

IBM

with

mono-

chrome

display

and

MS-DOS

version

3.22.

And

just

any

such

PC,

itis

limited

the software

available

for

it.

Some

programs

for

desktop

XT-compatible

will

not

work

the

Palmtop—especially

they

need

graphic

display

extended

memory

(see

pages

111

and

123).

What

Can

Do—If

You

Really

Insist

The

Palmtop

not

really

designed

write

books,

publish

elaborate

spreadsheets,

develop

software,

etc.

You

can

those

things,

but

you’d

working

harder

than

necessary;

far

better

use

desktop

for

such

tasks.

For

example,

the

Palmtop

has a

Memo

Editor

with

some

standard

word-processing

features,

but

its

keyboard

size

not

the

best

for

touch-typing

lengthy

document.

Likewise,

the

built-in

2-3

program

great

for

analyzing,

but

you'll

find

convenient

prepare

the

final

presentation

output

spreadsheet

desktop

system.

First

THOUGHTS

What

Was

Designed

The

Palmtop

isn’t

meant

used

for

everything

that

you

use

desktop

for—just

the

things

you

need

most

often

while

“on

the

move:”

personal

tool:

gives

you

the

“what-iffing”

ability

Lotus

1-2-3

and

the

ability

missing

variables

(HP

Solver).

Enough

memory

capacity

store

and

manipulate

quite

bit

data.

Ithas

MS-DOS

too,

but

that’s

mainly

you

can

add

other

analytic

tools—

and

send/receive

files

to/from

a desktop

for

the

tasks

it’s

not

good

at.

You

Already

Know

About

PC’s

You'll

find

that

many

the

Palmtop’s

features

behave

those

other

PC’s.

All

the

built-in

applications

have

Lotus-like

menus,

from

which

you

select

any

item

typing

the

first

character

its

name.

And,

the

bottom

most

items

function

keys

(F1){F©))

the

top

keyboard.

execute

listed

command,

press

the

corresponding

function

key.

One

big

difference

between

the

Palmtop

and

other

PC’s

that

you

can

have

multiple

applications

open

simultaneously

the

Palmtop—and

switch

press-

ing

just

one

key

(although

you

can’t

access

the

prompt

run

DOS-based

application

unless

all

built-in

applications

are

closed

(more

about

this

114).

You

Already

Know

About

Calculators

you've

used

any

HP’s

recent

financial

calculators,

you'll

find

that

the

Palmtop

Calculator

feature

can

just

about

everything

they

can

(though

may

take

you

some

time

adjust

how

those

calculator

features

look

the

Palmtop’s

screen).

The

big

difference

between

the

calculators

and

the

Palmtop

how

the

Palmtop

uses

built-in

Lotus

1-2-3

templates

statistical

and

cash-flow

analyses.

About

Your

Looking

The

keyboard

not

the

standard

keyboard,

but

it’s

probably

convenient.

Take

look:

Character

Keys

The

alphabet

standard

The

gold

(©)

the

special

special

punctuation,

international,

symbolic

characters

(summa-

pages

140-142).

These

keys

are

“sticky”

keys:

once

you

press

(<),,

the

key

you

press

will

produce

the

shifted

Unlike

standard

keyboard,

you

don’t

have

hold

down

while

you

press

other

The

their

THOUGHTS

Application

The

give

you

Special

Keys

The

The

special

control

keys

that

give

you

access

various

commands.

These

keys

work

only

when

pressed

simultaneously

with

another

key,

[CTRL[Z)

(ALT

F1).

There

are

several

keys

that

will

“undo”

something

you've

done:

allows

you

escape

from

your

current

choice,

and

will

return

you

the

current

application,

whichever

appropriate.

Whenever

you

The

(MENU)

key

displays
