STX™Air Spray Trigger Gun

For portable spraying of water-based materials. Can be used for application of

solvent-based materials only when solvent compatible seals are installed and solvent

compatible, conductive hoses are used. For professional use only.

Not approved for use in European explosive atmosphere locations.

Warnings

The following warnings are for the setup, use, grounding, maintenance, and repair of this equipment. The

exclamation point symbol alerts you to a general warning and the hazard symbols refer to procedure-specific risks. When

these symbols appear in the body of this manual or on warning labels, refer back to these Warnings.

Product-specific hazard symbols and warnings not covered in this section may appear throughout the body of this manual

where applicable.

FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD

Flammable fumes, such as solvent and paint fumes, in work area can ignite or explode. Paint or solvent

flowing through the equipment can cause static sparking. To help prevent fire and explosion:

• Use equipment only in well-ventilated area.

• Eliminate all ignition sources; such as pilot lights, cigarettes, portable electric lamps, and plastic drop

cloths (potential static sparking).

• Ground all equipment in the work area.

• Never spray or flush solvent at high pressure.

• Keep work area free of debris, including solvent, rags and gasoline.

• Do not plug or unplug power cords, or turn power or light switches on or off when flammable fumes are

present.

• Use only grounded hoses.

• Hold gun firmly to side of grounded pail when triggering into pail. Do not use pail liners unless they are

anti-static or conductive.

•Stop operation immediately if static sparking occurs or you feel a shock.Do not use equipment until you

identify and correct the problem.

• Keep a working fire extinguisher in the work area.

SKIN INJECTION HAZARD

High-pressure fluid from gun, hose leaks, or ruptured components will pierce skin. This may look like just a

cut, but it is a serious injury that can result in amputation. Get immediate surgical treatment.

• Do not point gun at anyone or at any part of the body.

• Do not put your hand over the spray tip.

• Do not stop or deflect leaks with your hand, body, glove, or rag.

• Follow the Pressure Relief Procedure when you stop spraying and before cleaning, checking, or

servicing equipment.

• Tighten all fluid connections before operating the equipment.

• Check hoses and couplings daily. Replace worn or damaged parts immediately.

EQUIPMENT MISUSE HAZARD

Misuse can cause death or serious injury.

• Do not operate the unit when fatigued or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

• Do not exceed the maximum working pressure or temperature rating of the lowest rated system

component. See Technical Specifications in all equipment manuals.

• Use fluids and solvents that are compatible with equipment wetted parts. See Technical Specifications

in all equipment manuals. Read fluid and solvent manufacturer’s warnings. For complete information about

your material, request Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) from distributor or retailer.

• Do not leave the work area while equipment is energized or under pressure.

• Turn off all equipment and follow the Pressure Relief Procedure when equipment is not in use.

• Check equipment daily. Repair or replace worn or damaged parts immediately with genuine

manufacturer’s replacement parts only.

• Do not alter or modify equipment. Alterations or modifications may void agency approvals and create

safety hazards.

• Make sure all equipment is rated and approved for the environment in which you are using it.

• Use equipment only for its intended purpose. Call your distributor for information.

• Route hoses and cables away from traffic areas, sharp edges, moving parts, and hot surfaces.

• Do not kink or over bend hoses or use hoses to pull equipment.

• Keep children and animals away from work area.

• Comply with all applicable safety regulations.

PRESSURIZED ALUMINUM PARTS HAZARD

Use of fluids that are incompatible with aluminum in pressurized equipment can cause serious chemical

reaction and equipment rupture. Failure to follow this warning can result in death, serious injury, or property

damage.

• Do not use 1,1,1-trichloroethane, methylene chloride, other halogenated hydrocarbon solvents or fluids

containing such solvents.

• Do not use chlorine bleach.

• Many other fluids may contain chemicals that can react with aluminum. Contact your material supplier for

compatibility.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

Wear appropriate protective equipment when in the work area to help prevent serious injury, including eye

injury, hearing loss, inhalation of toxic fumes, and burns. Protective equipment includes but is not limited to:

• Protective eyewear, and hearing protection.

• Respirators, protective clothing, and gloves as recommended by the fluid and solvent manufacturer.

Pressure Relief Procedure

Follow the Pressure Relief Procedure whenever

you see this symbol.

1. Turn ON/OFF switch OFF and turn pressure control

knob fully counterclockwise to OFF position.

2. Point applicator into hopper. Turn applicator ON.

3. If you suspect the spray tip or hose is clogged or

that pressure has not been fully relieved:

a. If installed, turn prime valve down to prime

position.

b. VERY SLOWLY loosen the retaining ring (3),

hose end coupling (41), or pressure relief valve

on the sprayer to relieve pressure gradually.

c. Loosen the nut or coupling completely.

d. Clear the obstruction in the hose or tip.

NOTE: If pressure relief valve was used to relieve

pressure, be sure to disassemble and clean thoroughly.

This equipment stays pressurized until pressure is

manually relieved. To help prevent serious injury from

pressurized fluid, such as skin injection, splashing

fluid and moving parts, follow the Pressure Relief

Procedure when you stop spraying and before

cleaning, checking, or servicing the equipment.

Flush the Equipment

(Solvent-Based Materials)

• Flush before changing materials, before fluid can

dry or cure in the equipment, at the end of the day,

before storing, and before repairing equipment.

• Flush with a fluid that is compatible with the fluid

being dispensed and the equipment wetted parts.

• Flush at the lowest pressure possible. Check con-

nectors for leaks and tighten as necessary.

• Do not leave the gun or any parts in water or clean-

ing solvents.

1. Follow Pressure Relief Procedure, page 4.

2. Remove nozzle or disk by loosening retaining ring

(3).

3. Remove air control valve (12) and clean all residue

from air passages.

4. Hold a metal part of the gun firmly to a grounded

metal pail. Trigger the gun until clean solvent

dispenses.

5. Store in a dry location.

To avoid fire and explosion, always ground equipment

and waste container. To avoid static sparking and

injury from splashing, always flush at the lowest

possible pressure.

Setup

Connect Gun to Sprayer

1. Attach material hose to sprayer fluid outlet. Attach

air hose to air compressor.

2. Connect signal wire, then air hose and material

hose, tightening securely.

NOTE: When disconnecting signal wire, press and slide

down the red tab on the connector.

Install Nozzle

1. If equipment has recently been operated, Pressure

Relief Procedure, page 4.

2. For a round pattern, install round nozzle (5) and

tighten threaded retaining ring (3) as shown in Fig 1.

3. For a flat pattern, remove retaining ring (3). Place

adapter housing (4) over round nozzle (5) and

secure with threaded retaining ring (3). Install disk

(2) and secure with retaining nut (1). See Fig 2.

NOTE: See sprayer Operation manual for

instructions on how to start and prime sprayer.

Operation

Adjust Spray Pattern

NOTE: See T-Max Operation Manual for more details.

1. Remove spray disk and adaptor and rings so only

the nozzle is left on the front of the gun.

2. Turn applicator ON and adjust sprayer to determine

fluid flow and pressure. A good starting point is to

adjust fluid flow until you have an 9 in. (20 cm)

stream.

3. Clean off any material that oozed out of the air holes

in the round nozzle.

4. Attach spray disk, adapter, and hand-tighten rings.

Hold gun 18 to 30 in. (0.5 to 0.8 m) from a test

surface and turn on air needle valve to allow air to

atomize fluid. Test spray pattern.

5. Adjust air needle valve to achieve desired spray

pattern. NOTE: More fluid flow = more air; Less fluid

flow = less air.

6. If the desired spray pattern cannot be achieved, try

adjusting air pressure or try another spray disk and

nozzle combination.

7. When done spraying, release trigger. The fluid

passage will stay open, relieving pressure. Pressure

is relieved when fluid stops flowing.

8. When pressure is relieved, press trigger stop button

to close fluid passage.

Cleanup

Thoroughly flush STX spray trigger gun after each work

session before fluid begins to cure in gun. Store in a dry

location. Do not leave the applicator or any parts in water or

cleaning solvents.

Fluid Nozzle and Spray Disc Selection

Six spray disks and five nozzles are supplied with the sprayer. These parts can be interchanged to produce a pattern

suitable for each job. Use the chart below to help determine the right combination for your application.

Helpful Hints

• A spraying distance of 18 to 30 in. (0.5 to 0.8 m) is

recommended for most applications.

• Keep the gun triggered and moving as much as

possible.

• Set gun trigger latch to hold trigger open and reduce

operator fatigue on large surface areas.

• Simulated acoustic material with polystyrene texture

compresses easily so system pressure builds up

more slowly.

• When spraying elastomerics, maintain a wet edge.

Spray vertical passes followed by horizontal passes.

Then hold the gun further away and “dust” the area

to blend the pattern.

• To spray ceilings as high as 9 to 12 ft (3 to 4 m)

without using stilts or scaffolding, use more

pressure and open gun Air Needle Valve more to

project material onto ceiling.

• Check material consistency periodically. The

material may thicken as it sits and slow down

production. Check and thin material as needed to

maintain proper consistency.

• Relieve pressure fully before closing fluid passage

when spraying aggegrate material. Aggregate

material under pressure has a high risk of causing

packout in the gun.

• When not spraying for extended periods of time,

perform Pressure Relief Procedure, page 4.

Maintenance

1. Perform Pressure Relief Procedure, page 4.

2. Remove disk and nozzle assembly.

3. Remove trigger (25).

4. Unscrew air control valve (12) and clean.

5. Use a 3/8 in. hex key wrench to unscrew

head bolt (11).

6. Unscrew spring and valve guide (16). Remove

o-ring (18) and gasket (17).

7. Using a 3/8 socket, remove trigger stop bushing

(27), ball bearing (29), and trigger stop spring (30).

Inspect bore and remove any material build up.

8. Clean and inspect all parts. Replace worn or

damaged parts.

9. Lubricate all packings, o-rings and moving parts.

Reassemble the gun.
