Introduction

This Quick Start Guide provides information on how to install your

Microsoft® Windows 2003/2008/XP/Vista™, SUSE® or Red Hat Linux®

operating system and Adaptec SATA/SAS 1405, 1045 controller driver.

For other installation options, refer to the Adaptec SATA/SAS 1405, 1045

Controller Installation and User’s Guide included on the controller

Installation CD. For controller illustrations, refer to the last section of this

document.

Note: For the latest information about the products described in this

Guide, for operating systems support, and to download drivers, visit

www.adaptec.com.

Embedded in the controller’s BIOS are these utilities:

●Configuration Utility - Used to modify the controller and disk

drive settings

●Disk Utilities - Used to format and verify disk drives

Step 1 Installing the Controller

Caution: Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) can damage your SATA/SAS

controller. Handle the controller carefully so that you do not expose it

to static charge.

aIf you have a low-profile computer cabinet, replace the original full-

height bracket on the controller card with the low-profile bracket

supplied in the controller kit.

bTurn off your computer and disconnect the power cord.

cOpen the system cabinet.

dRemove the cover from an available PCIe slot.

eInstall the controller in the PCIe slot and secure the controller bracket

to the chassis.

fConnect the SATA/SAS controller’s I2C connector (not available on all

models) to an I2C connector on an internal backplane or enclosure,

using an I2C cable.

gInstall and connect any internal disk drives using the appropriate

cable(s), then close the computer cabinet.

●All connectors are keyed so that you can insert the cables in only

one direction.

●Do not try to force a cable in to the controller or a disk drive. If the

connector does not slide on easily, try reversing it.

Step 2 Setting Up the Boot Sequence

The process you use to access your computer’s BIOS Setup program and

set the boot sequence varies by the computer manufacturer. Refer to the

instructions provided with your computer. The steps may be similar to:

aDuring startup, press the key combination (for example, <F2>, <F1>,

<DEL>) that starts the BIOS Setup program.

bGo to the menu used to specify the boot sequence. Put the CD drive

first—this allows you to perform Step 3 below.

cGo to the menu used to specify the boot priority for disk drives. Put

the controller first in this sequence.

dSave your changes, exit Setup, and then restart your computer.

Step 3 Creating the Driver Disk

Before you install the driver, you need to create a driver disk. To create the

driver disk:

aInsert the Adaptec Controller CD and power on the computer to boot

from the CD.

bFollow the on-screen instructions to display the CD menu.

cClick Create Driver Disk, and select the required operating system.

dWhen prompted, insert a floppy disk, then click OK. The computer

creates the driver disk.

eRemove and label the driver disk.

fContinue with the installation of the operating system and controller

driver.

Step 4 Installing the Controller Driver with

the Operating System

Windows 2003/XP

aInsert the Windows CD, and restart the computer.

bWhen prompted to install a third-party driver, press F6.

Note: When F6 is active, a prompt appears at the bottom of the screen

for only 5 seconds. If you miss your chance to press F6, restart your

computer.

cInsert the driver disk, then wait until prompted to install the driver.

dPress S to specify that the driver is on the floppy disk, then press Enter.

The computer reads the disk.

eWhen the driver is found, press Enter. Follow the on-screen

instructions to complete the installation.

Windows Vista/Windows Server 2008

aInsert the Windows CD.

bWhen prompted to install a third-party driver, click Load Driver.

cBrowse to locate the driver and click Next to proceed with the

installation.

Red Hat Linux

aInsert the Red Hat CD.

bRestart the computer.

cWhen the Red Hat Welcome screen opens, type

expert

linux dd

at the boot prompt.

dWhen prompted, insert the driver disk you created, then select OK.

eFollow the on-screen instructions to set up the environment you want.

fIf you intend to install other third-party devices, install them now.

Otherwise, select Done.

gFollow the on-screen instructions to complete the Red Hat

installation.

SUSE Linux

aInsert the SUSE CD.

bRestart the computer.

cWhen the SUSE Installation menu opens, press the F6 key, select the

required installation option from the menu, then press Enter.

dWhen prompted, insert the driver disk you created, then press any key

to continue.

eFollow the on-screen instructions to set up the environment you want.

fIf you intend to install other third-party devices, install them now.

Otherwise, select Done.

gFollow the on-screen instructions to complete the SUSE installation.
