been previously cleaned in,

washed in, soaked in, or spotted

with gasoline, dry-cleaning

solvents, other flammable, or

explosive substances as they

give off vapors that could ignite

or explode.

•Under certain conditions, hydro-

gen gas may be produced in a

hot water system that has not

been used for 2 weeks or more.

HYDROGEN GAS IS EXPLO-

SIVE. If the hot water system

has not been used for such a

period, before using the washing

machine, turn on all hot water

faucets and let the water flow

from each for several minutes.

This will release any accumulated

hydrogen gas. As the gas is

flammable, do not smoke or use

an open flame during this time.

•Do not allow children to play on

or in the washer. Close supervi-

sion of children is necessary

when the washer is used near

children.

•Before the washer is removed

from service or discarded, re-

move the door.

•Do not reach into the washer if

the tub or agitator is moving.

•Do not install or store the washer

where it will be exposed to the

weather.

•Do not tamper with controls.

•Do not repair or replace any part

of the washer or attempt any

servicing unless specifically

recommended in this Use and

Care Guide or in published

user-repair instructions that you

understand and have the skills to

carry out.

Operating Your Washer

Your new washer can be used in either of two ways:

•as a water-saving spray-rinse washer,

•as a “traditional” fill-agitation-deep-rinse washer like most washers today.

To obtain the best washing results with either type, you must operate your washer properly.

This section gives you that important information.

Explosion Hazard

Never place items in the washer that

are dampened with gasoline or other

flammable fluids.

Do not wash or dry items soiled with

vegetable or cooking oils because

they may contain some oil after

laundering.

Doing so can result in death,

explosion, or fire.

Electrical Shock Hazard

Plug into a grounded 3 prong outlet.

Do not remove ground prong.

Do not use an adapter.

Failure to follow these instructions

can result in death, fire, or electrical

shock.

About the water-saving spray-rinse system

The washing portion for this system ends with

a drain and spin the same as do traditional

wash cycles. After that, the spray-rinse

system takes over.

•The washer continues to spin at the end of

the wash cycle. There is no fill.

•Fresh water is added as the machine spins

the load. Repeated spinning with spray

rinses achieves excellent rinsing and

uses up to 40% less water than does

a traditional rinse cycle.

NOTES: To assure proper spray rinsing:

•Do not open the washer lid during spray

rinsing.

•Do not use liquid fabric softeners when

using the water-saving spray-rinse system.

You could stain your clothes. Use a dryer

fabric softener sheet instead.

OPERATING YOUR WASHER

Starting your washer

Whether you use your washer’s water-

saving spray-rinse feature, or use it as a

traditional fill-agitation-deep-rinse washer,

the start up procedures are the same.

All of the knobs on your washer’s control

panel, except for the Cycle Control Knob,

function the same regardless of how you

are using your washer. The Cycle Control

Knob must be set for either type of

operation:

•Normal - Water Saving Spray Rinse

(see Step 8)

•Normal - Traditional Deep Rinse

(see Step 8).

1. Add measured detergent to the

washer. Then place a sorted load of

clothes in the washer.

•Sort and load clothes as described on

pages 18 and 19.

•If desired, you may also add color safe

bleach or extra detergent for the Super

Wash cycle.

2. (OPTIONAL STEP) If desired, add

measured liquid chlorine bleach to the

liquid bleach dispenser. See page 16.

•Use only liquid chlorine bleach in the

liquid bleach dispenser.

3. Close the washer lid.

4. Turn the Load Size Selector to the

setting that corresponds with the size

of your wash load and the type of

fabric being washed.

•As shown, your washer has 4load size

settings.

•To change the load size setting after

the washer has started to fill, turn the

Selector to the desired new setting.

5. Select a wash-rinse temperature with

the Water Temperature Selector. Match

the water temperature with the type of

fabric and soils being washed.

•See page 20 for water temperature

guidelines.

6. (OPTIONAL STEP) If desired, set the

Extra Rinse Selector to On to add

another rinse and spin to the end

of the wash cycle.

•Turn the Extra Rinse Selector to On

when adding extra detergent for the

Super Wash cycle, or any other cycle.

7. Turn the Fabric Speed Select to the

setting that matches the type of fabric

and soils being washed.

•The Selector lets you customize your

wash cycles for four types of fabrics:

Delicate, Knit, Cottons, and Permanent

Press.

•The selections will provide different spin

speeds, depending on the cycle selected

(Water Saving Spray Rinse or Traditional

Deep Rinse). See pages 9, 12 and 13.

8. Decide which Normal cycle you wish

to use on your washer:

•Water Saving Spray Rinse

•Traditional Deep Rinse.

9. Push in the Cycle Control Knob and

turn it clockwise to the Normal cycle

you want.

10. Pull out the Cycle Control Knob to

start the washer.

11. (OPTIONAL STEP) If you select a

Traditional Deep Rinse cycle, you

may add measured and diluted

liquid fabric softener to the final

rinse water. (See page 16.)

IMPORTANT: DO NOT add liquid fabric

softener if you select a Water Saving Spray

Rinse cycle. You could stain your clothes.

Stopping/restarting your washer

•To stop the washer at any time, push in

the Cycle Control Knob.

•To restart the washer, close the lid

(if open) and pull out the Cycle

Control Knob.

Selecting a fabric speed and cycle time

Use the information in this section to help

you make the best cycle selections for your

wash loads. Each cycle is designed for

different types of fabrics and soil levels.

The cycles in the Water Saving Spray

Rinse half of the Cycle Control Knob are

described first. The cycles in the Traditional

Deep Rinse half of the Cycle Control Knob

are described next.

OPERATING YOUR WASHER

When the Cycle Control Knob is set to a

number and pulled out, the washer fills (to

the selected load size) before agitation and

timing start. The washer begins agitating

immediately after filling; agitation occurs with

the washer lid up or down.

After agitation starts, the Cycle Control

Knob turns clockwise until it points to an Off

area and the cycle ends.

•Low speed spinning is available only in the

Traditional Deep Rinse cycles.

•A Gentle Wash System helps protect your

fabrics (if Cottons, P. Press, high-speed

agitation is selected) by reducing wash

agitation speed during the last few minutes

of wash agitation in the Super Wash, Heavy,

Regular, and Permanent Press cycles.

•Refer to page 14 to learn more about the

sounds you may hear during a wash cycle.

•Refer to page 11 to help you understand

what happens during the cycles in the

Water Saving Spray Rinse operation of

the washer.

•Refer to page 14 to help you understand

what happens during the cycles in the

Traditional Deep Rinse operation of

the washer.

•The washer pauses briefly throughout each

cycle. These pauses are normal for washer

operation.

Using spray rinse and spin

NOTE: An Extra Rinse option is available

in the Normal - Water Saving Spray Rinse

cycles. See page 7.

When using extra detergent for heavily

soiled clothes, or washing special-care

items, you may find an extra spray rinse

and spin is needed.

1. For an additional spray rinse, push in the

Cycle Control Knob and turn it clockwise

to the mark illustrated.

2. Pull out the Cycle Control Knob. The

washer will drain and spin, followed by

spray rinsing.

Using drain and spin

A drain and spin may help shorten drying

times for some heavy fabrics or special-care

items by removing excess water.

1. Push in the Cycle Control Knob and turn

it clockwise to the Spin mark illustrated.

2. Pull out the Cycle Control Knob. The

washer drains, then spins.
