FlyerChief™ Remote Control

The FlyerChief™ engines offer enhanced sound, long-distance control, AC/DC

compatibility, and allow you to run multiple engines at one time.

With the ﬂip of a switch you can dictate whether the engine is controlled via transformer

control or remote. Easy to use, with many features including chuff sounds that are

in sync with your engine, and a three-buttoned remote to activate user-controlled

announcements and engine sounds.

Incorporating Bluetooth technology into Lionel model trains opens a new world, integrat-

ing the tradition of model railroading with the latest smart-device technology. With

Lionel’s new LionChief app, you can control full operation and sounds directly from

your Bluetooth-enabled smart phone or tablet and operate multiple locomotives from

the same device. LionChief is available to smartphone users and is compatible with all

new 2017 LionChief, LionChief Plus, S-Gauge, and HO Trains.

sound system and ElectroCoupler, this FlyerChief locomotive can be operated with the LionChief

FlyerChief™ system features

Locomotive control

You may choose to control your FlyerChief locomotive with the included FlyerChief remote (using

a transformer or power supply capable of supplying a constant 18 VAC or 18 VDC to the track) or

using a transformer. Use the TRANSFORMER/REMOTE control switch to select between FlyerChief

remote operation or conventional AC transformer operation. See page 5 for switch location.

If you choose to run your locomotive in FlyerChief mode, slide the TRANSFORMER/REMOTE

switch to the REMOTE position. Your locomotive runs on ﬁxed 18 VAC or 18 VDC voltage, which

is optimal for the sound system and smoke system. The locomotive listens to commands from its

FlyerChief remote at a speciﬁc frequency to increase or decrease speed, change directions, or trigger

sounds. That’s why the locomotive and remote must be operated as a matched pair.

If you choose to run your FlyerChief locomotive with a transformer, slide the TRANSFORMER/

REMOTE switch to TRANSFORMER position with the track power off. The locomotive responds to the

transformer’s throttle and direction buttons.

FlyerChief RC sound system

Your locomotive features a wide range of sounds to make operation even more realistic and inter-

active! The diesel sounds are synchronized with the speed of the locomotive. You may choose to

turn the steam sounds off by sliding the RPM/SOUND switch to the OFF position. See page 5 for switch

locations.

ElectroCouplers

The ElectroCouplers can only be activated when the TRANSFORMER/REMOTE switch is in the

REMOTE position. For more information on activating the ElectroCouplers, see page 9.

Note that in Transformer mode, you should open the coupler on the car when coupling to your

train as you will not have remote control of the locomotive’s ElectroCoupler.

Switch locations

Refer to Figure 1 for the location of the switches on the underside of the locomotive’s cab.

SOUND switch: Turns background sounds on and off. Horn, bell, and announcement are not

affected.

TRANSFORMER/REMOTE switch: Toggles between Remote control mode and transformer con-

trol mode.

Installing AAA batteries into the Remote Control

For safety purposes, you must use a Phillips screwdriver to access the battery compartment. Use a

Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw that secures the battery compartment hatch and lift the

hatch to access the battery compartment (as shown in Figure 2). Insert three AAA alkaline batteries

orienting the +/- as shown in the bottom of the battery compartment. Replace the battery door and

tighten the Philips head screw. Be careful to avoid overtightening the screw.

Use only Alkaline AAA batteries. Use only new batteries. Never mix new and used

batteries or use different types together.

When you are not operating the train, move the On/Off switch to the

Off position to conserve the battery life.

The WHISTLE button will activate

your locomotive’s whistle. Hold the

ANNOUNCEMENT/SHIFT button and

press the ELECTROCOUPLER to trigger

the ElectroCoupler on the front of the

engine.

Press the center button for a variety

of announcements.

ON/OFF SWITCH

Turn remote control on and

off. We recommend turning off

the remote when not in use to

conserve battery life. Remove

the batteries for storage.

SPEED INDICATOR LIGHT

The red light will remain on during

normal operation. The light will begin to

ﬂash when the locomotive is in motion,

and the ﬂashing will vary with the

locomotive's speed.

THROTTLE

Control speed and direction with the knob.

Turn the knob to the right to move forward,

left for reverse and back to center (top) for

stop. The LED indicator light will ﬂash to

indicate that speed signals are being sent to

the locomotive.

Running your locomotive with the FlyerChief remote

Slide the TRANSFORMER/REMOTE switch to the REMOTE position.

Refer to Figure 1 on page 5 for the location of this switch.

With track power turned off, place your locomotive on the track.

Power up the track to 18 volts (AC or DC) and move the remote power

switch to ON. When the locomotive is powered up, it will beep until it syncs with the

remote. When the locomotive is synced up with the remote, the locomotive start-up

sounds will begin to play.

When in remote mode and powered up on the track, the

locomotive will continue to beep until it is synced up with its

remote. If the locomotive beeps during operation, be sure that

fresh batteries are installed properly in the remote and the

TRANSFORMER/REMOTE switch is in the REMOTE position.

Move ‘em out! Use your remote to run your train. You can adjust the speed in for-

ward or reverse, blow the whistle, sound the bell, or trigger an announcement. Refer to

page 7 for complete details.

Turn off the power supply when you are done running your trains.

Switch off your remote control to conserve the batteries.

Operating the ElectroCoupler with the FlyerChief remote

In FlyerChief remote mode, hold down the Announcement/Shift button and press the Horn/

ElectroCoupler button to open the ElectroCoupler on the front of the engine. Hold down the

Announcement/Shift button and press the Bell/ElectroCoupler button to open the ElectroCoupler on

the rear of the engine.

Operating multiple FlyerChief locomotives

You may choose to operate more than one FlyerChief locomotive at the same time—including

locomotives of the same type (e.g., two GP7s with different road names and/or road numbers).

Each locomotive is paired with a unique remote. A locomotive will only respond to commands from

its corresponding remote. You can also use the Universal LionChief Remote (6-83071) to control this

and two additional FlyerChief locomotives.

If you attempt to operate two of the exact same locomotives (same type, roadname, and Lionel part

number), then one remote will control both locomotives simultaneously.

Note that the dialog is different between locomotive types. As such, the actual announcements

are not listed out in the table above.

Triggering sounds and announcements with the FlyerChief remote

Press the announcement on the FlyerChief remote to trigger the corresponding sounds. Your

locomotive plays a variety of announcements that are designed to match the way you operate the

locomotive. You can trigger an announcement that corresponds to each part of the journey. See page

16 to adjust the volume level.

Using the LionChief App

Once you have downloaded the free LionChief app and your locomotive is powered up on the

track, tap the LionChief icon on your smart device.

This screen will be present and within a few seconds it will automatically connect with your loco-

motive. Once it has connected, your Bluetooth enabled locomotive will show up in the locomotive

box. You are now ready to operate your locomotive.

Connecting to your LionChief, LionChief Plus, or FlyerChief locomotive

Your locomotive will make a chirping sound until the connection process is complete.
