Install the EX4100 Switch in a Rack
Before you start the installaon, ensure to review the General Safety Guidelines and Warnings. Also, have someone
available to help you secure the switch to the rack.
You can install the EX4100 switch on a desktop or other level surface, in a two-post or four-post rack, or on a wall. The
mounng kit that ships in the box has the brackets you need to install the switch in a two-post rack. We’ll walk you
through how to install the switch in a two-post rack.
NOTE: If you want to install the switch in a four-post rack or on the wall , you’ll need to order separate mounng
kits. The four-post rack mount kit also has brackets for mounng the switch in a recessed posion in the rack.
1. Place the switch on a at, stable surface.
4
2. Aach an ESD grounding strap to your bare wrist, and connect the strap to the ESD grounding point on the switch.
3. Li the switch and posion it in the rack. Posion the switch so that the AIR IN labels on the fan modules are facing
the cold aisle or the AIR OUT labels on the fan modules are facing the hot aisle. Line up the boom hole in each
mounng bracket with a hole in each rack post, ensuring that the switch is level.
4. While you’re holding the switch in place, have a second person insert and ghten the rack mount screws to secure
the mounng brackets to the rack posts. Tighten the screws in the two boom holes rst, and then ghten the
screws in the two top holes.
5. Check that the mounng brackets on each side of the rack are lined up with each other.

Power On
Now you’re ready to connect the EX4100 switch to a dedicated AC power source. The switch comes with the AC
power cord for your geographic locaon.
Here's how to connect the switch to AC power:
1. Aach an ESD grounding strap to your bare wrist, and connect the strap to the ESD grounding point on the switch.
2. Connect one end of the grounding cable to a proper earth ground, such as the rack .
3. Place the grounding lug (that's aached to the grounding cable) over the protecve earthing terminal on the rear
panel as depicted in the following gures.
EX4100-24P, EX4100-24T, EX4100-48P, and EX4100-48T switch models
4. Secure the grounding lug to the protecve earthing terminal using the two M5X10 mm screws with washer
5. Dress the grounding cable. Ensure that the cable doesn’t block access to or touch other device components, and
that it doesn’t drape where people could trip over it.
6. Ensure that the power supply is fully inserted in the rear panel of the switch.
7. On the rear panel, connect the power cord retainer clip to the AC power supply:
a. Push the end of the power cord retainer strip into the slot above the power cord socket unl the strip snaps
into place. Ensure that the loop in the retainer strip faces the power cord. The power cord retainer clip extends
out of the chassis by 3 in. (7.62 cm).
b. Press the small tab on the retainer strip to loosen the loop. Slide the loop unl there's enough space to insert
the power cord coupler into the power cord socket.
c. Plug in the power cord to the power cord socket.
d. Slide the loop toward the power supply unl it's snug against the base of the coupler.
6
e. Press the tab on the loop and draw out the loop into a ght circle.
8. If the AC power source outlet has a power switch, turn it o.
9. Insert the power cord plug into an AC power source outlet.
10. If the AC power source outlet has a power switch, turn it on. The switch powers on as soon as you plug it in.
11. Check to see that the DC OK LED on the power supply is lit steadily green. If not, disconnect the power supply
from the power source. You’ll need to replace the power supply (see Maintain the EX4100 Power System in the
EX4100 Switch Hardware Guide).
Step 2: Up and Running

Plug and Play | 7
Customize the Basic Conguraon Using the CLI | 8
Now that the EX4100 switch is powered on, let’s do some inial conguraon to get the switch up and running on your
network. It’s simple to provision and manage the switch and other devices on your network. Choose the conguraon
tool that’s right for you:
• Juniper Mist. To use Mist, you’ll need an account on the Mist Cloud Plaorm. See Overview of Connecng Mist
Access Points and Juniper EX Series Switches.
• CLI commands
Plug and Play
EX4100 switches already have factory-default sengs congured right out of the box to make them plug-and-play
devices. The default sengs are stored in a conguraon le that:
7
• Sets Ethernet switching and storm control on all interfaces
• Sets Power over Ethernet (PoE+) on all RJ-45 ports of models that provide PoE+
• Enables the following protocols:
• Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) snooping
• Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP)
• Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP)
• Link Layer Discovery Protocol-Media Endpoint Discovery (LLDP-MED)
These sengs are loaded as soon as you power on the switch. If you want to see what’s in the factory-default
conguraon le for your switch, see EX4100 Default Conguraon.
Customize the Basic Conguraon Using the CLI
Have these values handy before you begin customizing sengs for the switch:
• Hostname
• Root authencaon password
• Management port IP address
• Default gateway IP address
•(Oponal) DNS server and SNMP read community
1. Verify that the serial port sengs for your laptop or desktop PC are set to the default:
• Baud rate—9600
• Flow control—None
• Data—8
• Parity—None
• Stop bits—1
• DCD state—Disregard
2. Connect the console port on the EX4100 switch to a laptop or desktop PC using the Ethernet cable and the RJ-45
to DB-9 serial port adapter that came in the box with the switch. If your laptop or desktop PC doesn't have a serial
port, use a serial-to-USB adapter (not provided).
3. At the Junos OS log in prompt, type root to log in. You don't need to enter a password. If the soware boots before
you connect your laptop or desktop PC to the console port, you might need to press the Enter key for the prompt
to appear.
8
NOTE: EX Series switches running current Junos soware are enabled for Zero Touch Provisioning (ZTP).
However, when you congure an EX Series switch for the very rst me, you’ll need to disable ZTP. We
show you how to do that here. If you see any ZTP-related messages on the console, just ignore them.
