WX 100 QUICK START

1000 Mbps LC Fiber-Optic Connectors or

10/100/1000 BaseT Ethernet Interfaces

Welcome to the Juniper WX 100 application acceleration platform. This 2-rack unit network

infrastructure device has 1000 Mbps fiber-optic connectors or 10/100/1000 BaseT Ethernet

interfaces, and is deployed on the LAN side of the edge router. This quick start card describes

how to install the WX 100 in the data path between a switch and a router. To install the WX 100

“off-path” (connected only to the switch or router), refer to the WX/WXC Operator’s Guide.

Before you begin:

•Fiber-optic connectors do not support the “switch-to-wire” feature.

Therefore, it is strongly recommended that you install a WX 100 with fiber-

optic connectors in a high-availability (HA) environment.

•Inspect the package contents. Refer to the package contents document

enclosed with the product.

•Ensure sufficient AC power is available. Supply circuits should be protected

by a maximum 20A circuit breaker.

•Ensure a minimum of 6 inches clearance in the front and back of the chassis.

•Reserve sufficient rack space to connect client WX devices to the WX 100.

•Verify that all firewalls between WX devices allow traffic for TCP/UDP ports

3577 and 3578, and for IPComp, the IP payload compression protocol used

for reduction tunnels between devices (protocol number 108).

•Identify a fiber-optic LAN port or a 10/100/1000 BaseT Ethernet port that

transmits data to your WAN router. This port is typically from an aggregation

switch, or from another LAN device connected directly to the router.

•Obtain a license key. The license key determines the throughput levels for

the device, and properly registers the product. To obtain a permanent license

key, go to https://www.juniper.net/generate_license.

Installation:

➊Set up the chassis.

•For rack mount installation, install the supplied brackets, front panel

forward, to the sides of the device.

•For desktop installation, install the supplied rubber stands on the

bottom of the chassis.

NOTE: Do not connect the power cable until Step 4.

➋Connect the network cables.

For a WX 100 with LC fiber-optic connectors, you must obtain the appro-

priate conversion unit if the Switch (local device) or Router (remote

device) uses a different type of fiber-optic connector.

To connect the network cables:

•Locate the cable that connects from the switch (or other aggregating

device) to the router.

•Disconnect this cable from the router port and connect it to the

Local port on the WX 100.

•Connect a cross-over cable or a fiber-optics cable with an LC con-

nector (not provided) from the router port to the Remote port on the WX 100.

CAUTION: The WXC 590 and WX 100 require a cross-over cable to allow traffic to pass through during a reboot or system

failure (all other WX platforms use a straight-through cable). Always test connectivity with the power off (see the next step).

IMPORTANT: Fiber-Optic connectors do not support the “switch-to-wire” feature. Therefore, it is strongly recommended

that you install a WX 100 with fiber-optic connectors in a high-availability (HA) environment.

➌Verify bypass connectivity (not required for a fiber-optic WX 100)

Before applying power, verify that a WX 100 power failure will not block network traffic. One way of testing the bypass

connectivity is to Ping a host on the remote side of the WX 100 from a host on the local side of the WX 100.

NOTE: If you cannot verify bypass connectivity on both sides of the device, do not proceed to the next step.

Ensure that you are using the correct cables (crossover vs. straight-through), and verify that you have bypass

connectivity before applying power.

➍Connect the power.

Connect a power cable to each of the power supplies on the back of the

chassis, and connect the other end of the power cables to your local AC

power source. If one power supply stops functioning, the other power

supply can continue providing full power indefinitely. A failed power

supply can be removed and replaced while the device is running.

NOTE: The power usage is 300 Watts Max or 1025 BTU/hr. When you

want to disconnect power from the device, unplug BOTH power cables.

➎Configure the Network Settings.

Connect an ANSI compatible terminal to the console port, and use a terminal emulation program (e.g., HyperTerminal)

to log in to the CLI. Note the following serial port settings:

Baud Rate: 9600, Data Bits: 8, Parity: NONE, Stop Bits: 1,

Flow Control: NONE, Smooth-Scroll: DISABLED

•Start the terminal emulation program, and choose to connect via the serial port.

•At the User name and Password prompts, type admin for the user name and peribit for the password.

•Type an IP address, and press Enter. Next, type the subnet mask for the network, and press Enter. Finally, type the

IP address of the default gateway for this device, and press Enter.

•Type “save-config” and type “y” to confirm. You can safely bypass the other configuration questions at this time.

NOTE: By default, the interfaces are set to auto-negotiate. However, depending on the interface settings of the switch and

router (auto-negotiate or 1000/Full) it is recommended that you set the interface speed manually. The Local port setting

should match the interface settings of the switch, and the Remote port setting should match the interface settings of the

router. It is also recommended that the Local and Remote interface settings be the same.

➏Check the LEDs below the Local and Remote interfaces.

5•The BaseT Ethernet version has two rows of three LEDs:

•The Link/Activity LEDs indicate connectivity.

•The 100 and 1000 LEDs indicate the interface speed in Mbps.

•If the 100 and 1000 LEDs are off, the interface speed is 10 Mbps.

•If all 100 and 1000 LEDs are on, the device is in passthrough mode.

5•The fiber-optic version has one LED for each interface to indicate

1000 Mbps.

After checking the LEDs, verify connectivity across the device again

(as described in Step 3).

WX 100 QUICK START

Quick Setup:

After powering on the device and assigning IP parameters, the next step is to log in to the Web console and run the Quick

Setup program. The first time you log in to the Web console, the Quick Setup program starts automatically and guides you

through initial configuration options for the device.

You can log in to the Web console from any workstation within your network. The Web console supports Microsoft Internet

Explorer version 6.0 (and later). Data is securely transmitted through HTTPS.

To log in to the Web console and run Quick Setup, follow these steps:

➊From a workstation within your network, start your Web browser and enter the following URL:

https://(ip address of the WX device)

5•Depending on your browser settings, the Security Alert dialog box may appear. Click Yes to proceed.

5•In the Enter Network Password dialog box, type admin for the user name and peribit for the password.

NOTE: This is a factory-configured password for the device. You will be asked to change the default password during the

Quick Setup.

➋Select an Operating Mode.

A device can run in Active mode or Profile Mode.

•Active Mode — Active operation where the device reduces data, accelerates TCP applications, and manages bandwidth.

• Profile Mode — Passive operation where the device can calculate potential data reduction statistics for all traffic,

individual applications, and specific remote subnets. The actual traffic is not affected.

CAUTION: Profile Mode disables the Remote interface. To use Profile Mode, the device’s Local interface must be connected

to a mirrored port on the switch, and the Remote interface must be disconnected. Traffic will be blocked if you select

Profile Mode when the device is installed in the data path.

•Click Next to continue.

➌Registration Server Setup.

One device must be designated as the Registration Server.

•To designate this device as the registration server, enter a registration server password in the appropriate fields.

The registration server password authenticates the devices in a community, and should be different from the

administrator password.

•If this device is not the registration server, enter the IP address and password of the current (or future) registration

server in the appropriate fields. This device will not process data until the registration server is configured.

•If you select the option to delay the formation of reduction tunnels, this device will not reduce or assemble data from

other devices until you enable reduction tunnel formation in the Endpoints page of the Web console.

•Click Next to continue.

➍Set the Time.

•If your network uses an NTP server for device time settings, enter the IP address of the NTP server. Otherwise, enter

the current time, date, and local time zone for the device. If applicable, select the Daylight Savings checkbox.

•Click Next to continue.

➎Specify Feature and Topology Settings.

The feature and topology settings ensure that device resources are used efficiently to reduce and assemble data.

• Select Active Flow Pipelining (AFP) or AFP and Application Flow Acceleration if you want to use these features.

• Choose the topology setting that best describes the device’s relationship to the other WX devices in the community (Hub,

Spoke, or Mesh). For a Hub or Mesh device, select the range of devices in the community.

• Click Next to continue.

➏Advertise Local subnet.

By default, the device’s local subnet is not advertised to the other WX devices in the community. As a result, data destined for

this subnet is not reduced — even if there is a WX device in the path.

•If you want other WX devices to reduce data destined for this subnet, select the Advertise checkbox.

If you choose not to advertise the local subnet, you should review the Reduction Subnets page of the Web console

after completing the Quick Setup.

•In the Device name field, you can assign a name for the device.

•Click Next to continue.

❼Enter a license key.

By default, each device has a 30-day evaluation license. When the evaluation license expires, data will pass through the

device without reduction.

If you have purchased the device, you can use the serial number to obtain a permanent license key through the Online

License Service. The License Key server is accessible by clicking Online Service or by calling Support at 1-888-314-JTAC (or

408-745-9500).

•Enter the permanent license key in the License key field.

•Click Next to continue.

❽Change Administrator password.

•Enter a new Administrator password in the New password and Verify new password fields, and then click Finish.

NOTE: If you deselect the “automatic save” option, configuration settings will be reset by the next power cycle.
