This document details the procedures for replacing a

failed power UID (Unit ID) module in an HP storage

enclosure.

Before you begin

Observe the following precautions when replacing a module.

CAUTION:

Parts can be damaged by electrostatic discharge. Use proper

anti-static protection. Refer to the documentation that shipped

with your system for additional information.

NOTE:

Illustrations in this document may show modules or a chassis

that differ from your device. However, replacement procedures

are the same for all chassis that use this component.

The power UID is located on the front of the disk enclosure.

Verifying component failure

Check for improper or failed operation of the heartbeat and fault LEDs

on the front right bezel, and also the System UID LEDs. Improper LED

behavior may be an indication that the interconnect board needs to be

replaced. The following table describes LED behavior.

•= Health. Solid green indicates the enclosure is operating

normally. Blinking green indicates that the enclosure is starting up

and not ready, performing POST. Off indicates that there is no power.

•= Fault warning. Flashing amber indicates a fault of lesser im-

portance, while solid amber indicates a fault of greater importance.

•= Unit identification. Push button to illuminate solid blue; push

again to turn off. The UID mimics the status of the UID at the front of

the enclosure. A remote session from the management utility can also

illuminate this LED.

Removing the power UID interconnect

board

1. Schedule a maintenance window.

2. Stop all I/O to the enclosure.

3. Power down the enclosure by pressing and holding the On/Standby

button on the rear of disk enclosure, until the system power LED

changes from green to amber.

4. Remove all cabling from the rear of the enclosure. Ensure all cabling

is marked to facilitate re-cabling later.

WARNING!

A disk enclosure fully populated is heavy. Prior to

removing the enclosure from the rack, remove each

disk and label it with its bay number. Place each disk

on a clean surface. If this is not possible, two people

are required to remove the enclosure from the rack to

prevent injury.

5. Remove hard drives from the enclosure.

Press the release button on the drive lever (1), and rotate the lever

to the left (2).

Then, pull and remove the disk drive out of the drive bays (3).

6. Loosen the thumbscrews that secure the enclosure to the front of the

rack, and remove the enclosure from the rack.

7. Remove the top access cover.

a. Lift the access panel latch (1). The access panel will slightly

disengage from the enclosure.

b. Slide the access panel to the rear (2) and lift away from the

chassis.

NOTE:

A Torx tool with T-10 and T-15 ends is provided inside

the enclosure chassis, on top of the I/O module

housing.

8. Separate the drive cage from the chassis.

a. Disconnect all cables from the backplane.

b. On each side of the chassis, remove the three T-10 screws that

secure the drive cage to the chassis.

c. Grasp the top of the drive cage, slide it off the guideposts on

the bottom of the chassis, and lift the drive cage just out of the

chassis.

9. Remove the front UID.

a. Remove the T-10 screw securing the bezel to the chassis ear

and let the black bezel separate from the ear.

b. Remove the T-10 screw securing the interconnect board to the

bezel and lift the interconnect board away from the bezel.

c. Remove the piece of tape securing the cable to the drive cage.

d. Disconnect the cable from the interconnect board.

Installing the power UID interconnect

board

1. Secure the power UID interconnect board.

a. Connect the replacement cable to the replacement interconnect

board.

b. Secure the interconnect board to the bezel with the T-10 screw.

c. Secure the cable to the drive cage with the provided strip of

tape.

d. Secure the bezel to the chassis ear with a T-10 screw.

2. Secure the drive cage to the chassis.

a. Slide the drive cage in position, aligning the keyhole openings

on the bottom flange of the drive cage with the guideposts on

the bottom of he chassis, and replace the six T-10 screws.

b. Reconnect all cables to the backplane.

NOTE:

The cables are keyed and are different in size, to

prevent connecting to the wrong port.

3. Replace the top access cover.

4. Reinstall the enclosure in the rack, making sure to tighten the front

bezel thumbscrews.

5. Reinstall the enclosure in the rack.

WARNING!

Reinstall the drives in the same slot locations.

With the drive lever in the open position, reinsert drives fully into

each bay, pressing on the lever to secure each drive, remove any

labels added to mark the drives.

6. Reattach the power and data cables to the enclosure components.

7. Press the On/Standby button on the power UID bezel (located at

rear of enclosure) and hold it down long enough to power up the

enclosure.

8. Restart all servers with access to the disk enclosure, to ensure that

the storage is discovered properly.

Verifying proper operation

After replacing the interconnect board, check the heartbeat, fault, and

UID LEDs on the front UID for proper operation.

NOTE:

Wait one minute after powering up the enclosure for the system

to check component status.

Returning the failed component

Follow instructions shipped with the replacement part.
