Confirm support for your hardware and software

components

Confirm that the devices you plan to connect and

their installed firmware and software versions are

supported for use with each other. The latest

support information is available on the HPE Single

Point of Connectivity Knowledge (SPOCK) website

at http://www.hpe.com/storage/spock.

Verify the operating environment

Review the MSA 1040 User Guide and ensure that

all environmental requirements are met, including

site wiring and electrical power inputs, ventilation

and cooling, and weight considerations.

Install the MSA 1040

Use the following steps to install your MSA 1040.

For more information, see the MSA 1040 User

Guide.

Step 1. Install device into the rack

Use the instructions provided with the rack mounting

kits or other devices to rack the MSA 1040,

expansion drive enclosures, switches, and servers.

WARNING! At least two people are needed

to lift a fully populated MSA 1040 or

expansion drive enclosure into the rack. If

the enclosure is being loaded into the rack

above chest level, a third person must assist

with aligning the enclosure with the rails,

while the other two people support the weight

of the enclosure.

Step 2. Connect expansion drive enclosures

If expansion drive enclosures are included in your

environment, connect SAS cables per their cabling

plan, either straight-through or fault tolerant.

Mini-SAS to Mini-SAS cables are required for each

drive enclosure.

NOTE: The MSA 1040 supports the MSA

2040 LFF Disk Enclosure. There is no MSA

1040-specific disk enclosure.

The following drive enclosures are supported:

Drive enclosure connection guidelines

•Expansion drive enclosures can be hot-added

to an MSA 1040 that is operating.

•Mini-SAS to Mini-SAS 0.5 m (1.64 ft) cables

are provided with MSA 2040, P2000, and

D2700 drive enclosures (one for each I/O

module).

•The maximum length cable supported for

connecting drive enclosures is 2 m (6.56 ft).

•Cables longer than those supplied with the

drive enclosure must be purchased separately.

For a list of cables available from Hewlett

Packard Enterprise, see the MSA 1040

QuickSpecs.

•The maximum number of enclosures supported

in an MSA 1040 solution is four (one MSA 1040

and up to three expansion drive enclosures).

Example MSA 1040 drive enclosure connections

MSA 1040 firmware supports both fault-tolerant and

straight-through SAS cabling to cascaded drive

enclosures. For more information about these

cabling schemes and for additional cabling

examples, see the MSA 1040 Cabling Configuration

Guide.

The following image illustrates connecting two

D2700 drive enclosures to an MSA 1040 using a

straight-through cabling scheme.

The following image illustrates connecting two

D2700 drive enclosures to an MSA 1040 using a

fault-tolerant cabling scheme.

Step 3. Connect the MSA 1040 to data hosts

Direct-connect and switch-connect environments

are supported. For direct-connect configurations,

connect cables from the MSA 1040 to the host. For

switch-connect configurations, connect cables from

the MSA 1040 to the switch ports and from the

switch ports to the hosts.

MSA 1040 connection guidelines

•No host interface cables are shipped with MSA

1040 arrays. For a list of cables available from

Hewlett Packard Enterprise, see the MSA 1040

QuickSpecs.

•In direct-connect deployments, connect each

host to the same port on both of the MSA

controllers.

•In switch-connect deployments, connect an

MSA Controller A port and the corresponding

MSA Controller B port to one switch, and

connect a second MSA Controller A port and

the corresponding MSA Controller B port to a

separate switch.

Example MSA 1040 connections

The following image illustrates connecting an MSA

1040 FC to two switches, and the two switches

connecting to two servers. Eight Fibre Channel

cables are required.

For more cabling examples, including connecting

directly to a server, see the MSA 1040 Cabling

Configuration Guide.

Step 4. Connect the MSA 1040 to a remote

management host (optional)

A remote management host directly manages

systems out-of-band over an Ethernet network.

If a remote management host is included in your

environment, connect an RJ-45 Ethernet cable from

the network management port on each MSA 1040

controller to a switch that your management host

can access (preferably on the same subnet).

Step 5. Connect two Remote Snap-capable

MSA systems to replicate volumes (optional)

The MSA 1040 supports HPE MSA Remote Snap

Software, an optional licensed disaster-recovery

utility. This utility performs asynchronous (batch)

replication of block-level data from a volume on a

primary MSA to a secondary volume on the same

system or on a separate, independent MSA system

that supports Remote Snap Software. These two

MSA systems connect through FC or Ethernet

switches that are on the same fabric or network.

NOTE: Remote Snap is not supported on

the MSA 1040 SAS system.

For more information about Remote Snap Software,

including cabling requirements and user information,

see the MSA 1040 User Guide, MSA 1040 SMU

Reference Guide, and Remote Snap online help.

Step 6. Connect power cords and power on

devices

IMPORTANT:

•The power cord must be approved for

use in your country. The power cord

must be rated for the product and for the

voltage and current marked on the

electrical ratings label of the product.

•Important safety information about power

cords is available in the Safety and

Disposal Guide, found on the Software

Support/Documentation DVD shipped

with the MSA 1040.

Apply power to the devices in the following order:

1. Connect power cords from the rack to separate

external power sources.

2. Power on the SAN/LAN switches (if

necessary).

3. Connect each power supply module in all

attached expansion drive enclosures to a

power source in the rack. If the drive

enclosures have power switches, apply power.

If the drive enclosures do not have power

switches, they automatically start.

4. Wait one minute to ensure that all drives in the

drive enclosure are powered up and ready.

5. Connect each power supply module in the MSA

1040 to a power source in the rack. The MSA

1040 automatically starts (it does not have a

power switch).

6. Observe the LEDs on the front and the rear of

the MSA 1040 and any expansion drive

enclosures, and confirm that no LEDs are

amber.

7. Power on the servers (if necessary).

Step 7: Update firmware on all components

After installing hardware and powering on devices

for the first time, verify that MSA 1040 controller

modules, expansion drive enclosure I/O modules,

and all disk drives are running the latest available

firmware. If updates are necessary, obtain the

firmware from the Hewlett Packard Enterprise

website and use the SMU to install the downloaded

firmware. For information, see the MSA 1040 SMU

Reference Guide.

Step 8: Configure the MSA 1040

Key configuration steps include setting the system

date and time, entering system parameters,

configuring storage volumes, and setting up SNMP

trap and email alert destinations. For more

information, see the MSA 1040 SMU Reference

Guide.
