Beforeusingthisprinter,pleasereadandfullycomplywiththeseinstructions,
thematerialsafetydatasheet(MSDS)forconsumablesused,andsafety
labelsafxedtotheprinter.Servicingmustbeperformedonlybyqualied
peoplewhoareappropriatelytrained.
■ Liability
Markem-Imajeshallnotbeliableforanydamageorinjuryresultingfromany
failuretofollowthesesafetyinstructions,aswellasgoodmanufacturing
practicesandsafetystandardsthataregenerallyapplicableintheindustry,
wheninstalling,usingorservicingMarkem-Imajeequipment.
Any user who modies or repairs Markem-Imaje equipment, uses
consumables,sparepartsoraccessoriesotherthanthosesuppliedby
Markem-Imaje,orfailstocomplywithMarkem-Imajespecicationsshall
havesoleresponsibilityfortheconsequencesthereof.
Markem-Imajeshallnotbeliableforanymalfunctionordamagecaused
by any modication of the equipment or use of the equipment for any
purposes other than those for which it is designed. The user shall be
solelyresponsibletotakeanyprecautionsrequiredbyanyusetowhich
theuserputstheMarkem-Imajeequipment.
Markem-Imaje consumables (inks, cleaning products and other
consumables), spare parts and accessories are designed for use
with Markem-Imaje equipment. Use of consumables, spare parts or
accessories,thatarenotproducedorrecommendedbyMarkem-Imajefor
usewiththespecicMarkem-Imajeequipmentmayharmtheequipment
andcauseperformancefailures.
Because Markem-Imaje equipment is tested with Markem-Imaje
consumablesandsparepartsforconformitywithcertainregulationsand
safetystandards,useofnon-Markem-Imajeconsumablesandspareparts
alsomaybeinconsistent with testing conditions and affectcompliance
of the equipment with certain standards. The user shall bear all risks
associatedwithuseofunsuitableconsumablesandspareparts.

marking.

■ Safety
Despite all the precautions taken by Markem-Imaje to guarantee
the safety of its printers, a residual risk remains if certain
recommendationsforusearenotfollowed.
Foreachusecaseofthesystem,itisrecommendedtowearadapted
personnalprotectiveequipment(safetyshoes,glasses,gloves...).
Disconnectthesystem from its powersourceand call inqualied
personnelinthefollowingcases:
• Thepowercableorplugisdamagedorworn.
• Liquidhasbeenspilledonthesystem.
• Thesystemhasbeenexposedtorainorwater.
• Theprinterisnotfunctioningcorrectlyalthoughtheuserhas
followedtheinstructions.
• Theprinterhasfallenoritshousingisdamaged.
• Theprinterisnotfunctioningcorrectlyandrequiresservice.
■ Steps to take in the event of an accident
Shutofftheprinterimmediatelyintheeventofanemergency.

When working with hot ink, Markem-Imaje recommends wearing
protectiveglovesandsafetygoggles.
A dry chemical or CO2 extinguisher should be installed near the
printerassuitableextinguishingmedia;donotusewater.

Hot Surfaces.Thislabelindicateshotsurfaces.Toprevent
injuryfromburns,donottouchthejetarraysurfaceorhotink
directly. Wear protective eyeglasses when working with hot
ink.
Protective Earth.Thislabelidentiesaprotectiveearth
point.
High Voltage.Thislabelindicateshighvoltagesinsidethe
printer.Topreventinjuryfromelectricalshock,disconnect
thepowercordfromtheelectricaloutletbeforeservicingthe
enclosure.

■ Automatic Startup
DonotallowanautomaticpackagingmachinestartupafteraModel
5200/5400reset.TheModel5200/5400enduserisresponsiblefor
conguringthesoftwareandinstallingthestatusoutputsignaloption
inawaythatrequirestheoperatortomanuallyrestartthepackaging
machineafteraModel5200/5400conditionhasbeencleared.Any
deviationfromthismethodisunsafeandanyconsequencesshallbe
undertheentireresponsibilityoftheuser.
■ Use
The printer is designed for drop-on-demand ink jet printing for
industrialpackagecoding.Anyotheruseoftheprinterisprohibited,
andanyconsequencesshallbeundertheentireresponsibilityofthe
user.
■ Handling
Aprintheadatoperatingtemperaturemustnotbemoved.Toprevent
printheaddamage,thehotprintheadmustrstbecooleddownusing
theShutdownfeatureandthenpoweredoffbeforebeingmoved.

■ Servicing
Disconnect the printer from the AC power supply before any
operationsrequiringcomponentstoberemovedorexchanged.
Useappropriatetoolsforanyworkontheprinter.
Servicing must be performed only by qualied people who are
appropriatelytrained.
■ Maintenance
Donotattempttoopenanysealedsectionsofthesystem!These
sectionsdonotrequireanymaintenanceontheuser’spart.
Disconnect the system from the power supply connected to the
printerbeforeperformingworkrequiringtheremovalorreplacement
ofcomponents.
Use appropriate tools for any work on electrical and pneumatic
components.Donot use pointed orsharpobjects when replacing
thethermalprinthead.
Werecommendmaintenanceworktobecarriedoutonlybystaffwho
have received technical training from Markem-Imaje and wearing
personal protective equipment (safety shoes, glasses, gloves...).
Anymaintenanceworknotdescribedinthismanualmustbecarried
outbyMarkem-Imajetechnicians.

■ Installation requirements
Installation must be performed without fail by a Markem-Imaje
technicians team. Any person modifying the installation shall be
whollyliableforsuchmodication.
The printer must be installed in accordance with applicable
requirements.
TheModel5200canhaveuptotwoprintheads.
TheModel5400canhaveuptofourprintheads.
Determinealocationfortheprinterthat:
• Providesaccesstothefrontandrearoftheenclosure,
includingaminimumof15cm(6”)clearanceintherearfor
adequatecoolingventilation.
• Positionstheprinthead(s)within3m(10’)oftheenclosure.
• Providessturdy,leveloorspace.
• Meetsenvironmentalandelectricalspecications.
Ensuretheelectricalrequirementsaresatised:
• Theprintermustbeconnectedtoa50–60Hz,single-phase
ACpowersupplyelectricitynetwork,1450Wmaximum(Model
5200)or2530Wmaximum(Model5400),withearthground
usingthecablesuppliedwiththeprinter.
• Theenduserisresponsibleforsupplyinganappropriateplug
orwiringtoaterminalblockontheACpowercord.
• TheACvoltagecongurationmustbeveriedorchangedto
matchtheenduser’sACvoltageservice.
• Forelectricalcharacteristics,seetheSerial/I.D./RatingLabel
ontherearoftheenclosure,nearthepowerswitch.
