Overview

This document supplements the Dell PowerVault 705N

Administrator Guide. It is strongly recommended that you

familiarize yourself with all of the relevant sections in

this document before you start using your 705N. For

software updates and up-to-date technical information,

check the Customer Support pages at

http://www.dell.com or http://support.dell.com.

These notes apply to all 705Ns and configuration soft-

ware:

To identify the hardware, BIOS, and embedded soft-

ware versions, use the Web interface and click on

the DELL E COM  logo at the top of any owerVault

NAS page.

To determine the version of the owerVault Assist

utility, start the application, click on the icon in the

upper left corner of the dialog box, and select About

owerVault Assist

To determine the version of the owerVault I utility,

open the program and choose About owerVault I

... from the Apple menu.

705N Compatibility

With Network Client Software

A number of issues that may occur when the clients con-

nect to network servers are resolved by installing the lat-

est software updates, service packs, or patches on the

clients. For greater compatibility, performance, and reli-

ability, DELL strongly recommends that you upgrade your

client software as follows:

AppleShare Client 3.8.3, for MacOS Versions 7.6 to 8.6

AppleShare Client 3.8.6, for MacOS Version 9.0 (and later)

ovell® intraNetWare® Client 4.7 for Windows NT/2000

ovell® intraNetWare® Client 3.2 for Windows 95/98/Me

Language Support

for File and Folder Names

Documents saved on a 705N may be written in any lan-

guage that the operating system supports. File and folder

name support, however, is only provided for languages

that are compatible with Code ages 437 (US English),

850 (Western Europe including: Afrikaans, Dutch, En-

glish, French, German, Italian and Spanish) and 865

[Northern Europe including: Danish, Finnish, Icelandic,

Norwegian (Bokmål), Norwegian (Nyorsk) and Swedish].

Use of file and folder names in other languages not on

the above list may not be fully supported. Thus, files and

folders may be impossible to open or delete if named us-

ing unique characters in unsupported languages. Cyrillic

characters are an example of characters that are not sup-

ported for use in file or folder names.

To avoid problems with file or folder names, DELL recom-

mends that the 705N code page be set to the primary

language used on the desktops that will be using 705N.

For example, if the primary language used on the desk-

tops in your company is French, it is recommended that

the user set the 705N code page to 850.

For international markets outside of North America, the

705N user interface and documentation are available in

English, German, Spanish and French.

Macintosh Issues

The following are issues that you need to be aware of

when using Apple Macintosh workstations to access your

705N.

Changing Account Passwords From the

Windows Server

The 705N does not allow Apple networking users to change

their domain user account password directly from their

Macintosh. User account changes can be made from the

Windows server acting as the domain controller.

Backing up a 705N from a Macintosh

workstation

You can backup a 705N with a Macintosh computer us-

ing Dantz Retrospect. The 705N, however, does not ap-

pear as a network client in the volume selection window

because it cannot run the Retrospect Remote agent as a

system extension. To backup the data on a 705N, you

must mount the appropriate volume(s) on the desktop of

the Macintosh client you are using for network backups.

The volume(s) may be selected in the Retrospect volume

selection dialog window.

Microsoft Windows Issues-

Microsoft Networking

The following are issues that you need to be aware of

when using Microsoft Windows workstations to access

your 705N via Microsoft networking.

Some Windows clients report free space

inaccurately

Some Windows clients (3.x, 95, and 98) are unable to rec-

ognize free disk space in excess of two gigabytes. This

problem affects only the free space display. All cli-

ents can still use all the available disk space. Use a

Web browser to determine how much free space you have

on a drive. This information is displayed on the View

Disk Status page, under Disk Settings.

AutoCAD users report “File is in use”

error messages

AutoCAD users on a Microsoft network occasionally get

an error message indicating File is in use, open as Read-

Only, even if the file is not actually being accessed by

other users.

AutoDesk (the makers of AutoCAD), have determined that

this problem is caused by the Microsoft network client,

and is not specific to the 705N. A patch that corrects

this problem for AutoCAD is available at

Microsoft Windows Issues -

Novell Networking

The following are issues that you need to be aware of

when using Microsoft Windows workstations to access

your 705N via Novell networking:

Compatibility with Novell intraNetWare

Clients

Novell intraNetWare clients may have difficulties access-

ing 705N volumes, because of an incompatibility with the

705N auto-connect feature. You can resolve this by con-

figuring external NetWare security (see below) or disable

auto-connect (To disable auto-connect, add a password

to the user account called GUEST or delete this account.)

Configuring external NetWare security

You can configure your 705N to accept Novell networking

users and groups from another NetWare server (you can

do so from the Security Guides, Use another NetWare

servers security). However, please note the following:

If a user is already known to the other NetWare server,

do not create a 705N local account with the same

name and password. This can cause confusion when

assigning access rights to volumes.

If you configure your 705N for external NetWare se-

curity, it needs a few minutes to gather the list of

users and groups from the external NetWare server.

Until then, if you try to set up access controls for a

volume, the Web based user interface will report an

error message indicating that the external users and

groups are not available. lease hit the Close button

to exit the Network Share Access page, wait a few

minutes, and then retry the operation.

If you add users and/or groups to the external

NetWare server, these changes will not be propagated

to the 705N immediately. You may need to wait up to

15-20 minutes for your changes to appear on the

705Ns Network Share Access page. Note, however,

that this is not a problem when users try to login to

the 705N, as the users credentials are authenticated

directly by the external NetWare server.

Using Novell networking backup appli-

cations

For greater compatibility, performance, and reliability,

DELL strongly recommends that you upgrade to the lat-

est version of the NetWare backup application.

The 705N supports the following Novell networking

backup applications:

Computer Associates® ARCserve®I  (or Chey-

enne ARCserve) for NetWare

Veritas Backup Exec (or Seagate Backup Exec)

for NetWare

The 705N has not been tested with any other NetWare

backup applications that are compatible with Novells SMS

(Storage Management System) and TSA (Target Service

Agent) protocols. When using Novell networking backup

applications on a 705N, you need to be aware of the fol-

lowing issues:

Backups may fail because of the 705Ns 250-user

license. By default, the 705N is configured for 250

Novell networking users. If you licensed your backup

software (ARCserve or Backup Exec) for a smaller

number of users, the application will not allow you to

backup the 705N, as this would constitute a licens-

ing violation. You need to reduce the number of Novell

networking users to match your backup softwares

licensing restrictions. This is done with a Web

browser, from the Novell Networking Advanced Set-
