Knowledge Check
•Access Point
The Instant Wireless Network Access Point is a transparent Media
Access Control (MAC) bridge that provides access for wireless stations
to a wired local area network (LAN).
With an Access Point, wireless workstations can be added quickly and
easily to an existing wired network.

•802.11a -- an extension to 802.11 that applies to wireless LANs
and provides up to 54Mbps in the 5GHz band. 802.11a uses an
orthogonal frequency division multiplexing encoding scheme
rather than FHSS or DSSS.
•802.11b (also referred to as
802.11 High Rate
or Wi-Fi) -- an
extension to 802.11 that applies to wireless LANS and provides 11
Mbps transmission (with a fallback to 5.5, 2 and 1 Mbps) in the
2.4 GHz band. 802.11b uses only DSSS. 802.11b was a 1999
ratification to the original 802.11 standard, allowing wireless
functionality comparable to Ethernet.

•802.11g - A extension of the IEEE 802.11 standard for wireless
networking hardware. The 802.11g specifications used by Linksys
specify a maximum data transfer rate of 54Mbps using OFDM
modulation, an operating frequency of 2.4GHz, backward compatibility
with IEEE 802.11b devices and WEP encryption for security.

•OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing)
Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) is a method of
digital modulation in which a signal is split into several narrowband
channels at different frequencies.
•ISM band - The FCC and their counterparts outside of the U.S. have
set aside bandwidth for unlicensed use in the ISM (Industrial,
Scientific and Medical) band. Spectrum in the vicinity of 2.4 GHz, in
particular, is being made available worldwide.

•Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) uses a narrowband
carrier that changes frequency in a pattern that is known to both
transmitter and receiver. Properly synchronized, the net effect is to
maintain a single logical channel. To an unintended receiver, FHSS
appears to be short-duration impulse noise.
•Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) generates a redundant
bit pattern for each bit to be transmitted. This bit pattern is called a
chip (or chipping code). The longer the chip, the greater the
probability that the original data can be recovered. Even if one or
more bits in the chip are damaged during transmission, statistical
techniques embedded in the radio can recover the original data
without the need for retransmission. To an unintended receiver,
DSSS appears as low power wideband noise and is rejected (ignored)
by most narrowband receivers.

•The Linksys Dual-Band Wireless A+G Access
Point gives you universal wireless
connectivity. It’s the best way to add
wireless capability to your existing wired
network, or to add bandwidth to your
wireless installation.
•The Dual-Band Wireless A+G Access Point
contains two separate wireless connectivity
radio transceivers, which support all three
popular wireless networking specification.
•Protects your data and privacy, the A+G
Access Point can encrypt all wireless
transmissions. The MAC Address filter lets
you decide exactly who has access to your
wireless network, while Dynamic Frequency
Selection (DFS) puts your network on the
cleanest channel in your location.
