CHRONOGRAPHE «MARINE», TOURBILLON, REMONTAGE MANUEL,
(ANCRE, ROUE D’ÉCHAPPEMENT ET SPIRAL EN SILICIUM)
La couronne a deux positions:
1. Position neutre
(remontage manuel)
2. Position de mise à l’heure
Mise en marche de la montre
Couronne en position 1. Cette posi-
tion permet de remonter le mouve-
ment. Pour la mise en marche de la
montre, effectuer un remontage com-
plet en tournant la couronne vers le
haut (▲) jusqu’au moment où se fait
sentir une résistance (NE PAS FOR-
CER). Après un remontage manuel, il
est important de tourner la couronne
vers le bas (▼) (au minimum 1/4de
tour) afin de libérer le rouage de
remontoir. Par la suite, procéder au
remontage chaque jour à heure fixe
de préférence.
Mise à l’heure
Tirer la couronne en position 2. Puis
Puis repous-
ser la couronne en position 1. Après
cette opération, donner un tour à
la couronne vers le bas (▼) afin de
s’assurer qu’elle tourne librement.

Le temps au long cours
L’inscription gravée au dos de votre
montre MARINE atteste les liens sécu-
laires qui nous unissent au monde
de la navigation; elle rappelle qu’en
1815, A.-L. Breguet reçut de Louis
XVIII le titre d’«Horloger de la
Marine Royale», le plus grand hon-
heur auquel puisse aspirer un hor-
loger. Elégante et robuste, votre
montre MARINE est la digne héritière
des chronomètres de marine créés
par notre fondateur.

Le temps à l’état pur
Le chronographe avec tourbillon
intègre deux inventions majeures
d’A.-L. Breguet.
Le célèbre régulateur à tourbillon
breveté en 1801, a été conçu pour
compenser les écarts de marche
résultant des changements de posi-
tion de la montre. Il s’agit d’une
cage ronde mobile dans laquelle
sont logés le balancier spiral et
l’échappement. Cette cage tourne
sur elle-même avec une parfaite
régularité; les écarts de marche s’an-
nulent ainsi les uns les autres au
lieu de s’additionner. Deux siècles
plus tard, le tourbillon reste un véri-
table tour de force technique.
En 1820, A.-L. Breguet développe le
«chronomètre à doubles secondes,
dit d’observation». Ce garde-temps
qui permet de mesurer des temps
intermédiaires ou la durée de deux
événements simultanés est à l’ori-
gine du chronographe moderne.

Entrée en scène du silicium
Montres Breguet opère encore une
importante percée dans les nou-
velles technologies horlogères en
adoptant, pour la réalisation de cer-
tains composants de ses mouve-
ments, un matériau aux multiples
propriétés: le silicium.
Élément le plus abondant sur terre
après l’oxygène, le silicium est
insensible aux influences des
champs magnétiques, qui plus est
très résistant à la corrosion et à
l’usure. Plus léger et plus dur que
l’acier, il réduit l’inertie, permet un
fonctionnement sans lubrification
et offre une plus grande liberté géo-
métrique, soit la possibilité de
concevoir des formes nouvelles et
complexes.

“MARINE” CHRONOGRAPH, TOURBILLON, MANUALLY WOUND,
(ESCAPE WHEEL, LEVER AND BALANCE SPRING IN SILICON)
The crown has two positions:
1. Neutral position
(manual winding)
2. Time-setting position
Starting the watch
Crown in position 1. This position
allows you to wind the movement. To
start the watch, wind it fully by turn-
ing the crown upwards (▲) until
resistance is felt. ON NO ACCOUNT
FORCE THE CROWN. When the resis-
tance is felt at the end of winding, it is
important to turn the crown down-
wards (▼) (at least 1/4turn) in order
to release the crown wheel. Thereafter,
wind the watch daily, preferably at a
regular time.
Setting the time
Pull the crown out to position 2. Then
turn the crown upwards (▲) to move
the hands forwards to the desired
time. For accurate time-setting, ensure
that the last operation was done in a
clockwise direction. Then push the
crown back to position 1. After this
operation, rotate the crown down-
wards (▼) to make sure it turns
freely.

Important note
The 5837 chronograph is guaranteed
water-resistant to 10 bar (100 m),
provided the crown is in position 1.
The 5839 chronograph is guaranteed
water-resistant to 3 bar (30 m), pro-
vided the crown is in position 1.

A tribute to seafarers
The engraved inscription on the
caseback of your MARINE watch
testifies to its distinguished back-
ground. It was in 1815 that King
Louis VIII appointed A.-L. Breguet
as Horloger to the French Royal
Navy, the greatest honour to which
a watchmaker could aspire. With its
handsome reinforced case and fine
movement, your MARINE pays homage
to the quality and inventiveness of
our founder’s excep tionally accu-
rate marine chronometers.
Time in the Breguet style
The MARINE watch with tourbillon
and chronograph salutes two of
A.-L. Breguet’s most prestigious
complications.
The historic tourbillon regulator,
patented in 1801, was conceived to
compensate for errors in rate caused
by the constant changes in a watch’s
position. It consists of mounting the
escapement and sprung balance in
a mobile carriage which rotates on
itself with utter regularity. Errors
are thus reproduced regularly and
cancel each other out, rather than
accumulating. Two centuries later
it remains a technical “tour de
force”.
8
The chronograph mechanism has its
roots in the “chronomètre à doubles
secondes” or observation chronome-
ter, which our founder developed in
1820. This historic instrument
anticipated the modern chrono-
graph.
The introduction of silicon
With the introduction of various
critical mechanical movement parts
in silicon, Montres Breguet has once
again achieved a major break-
through in horological technology.
The planet’s second most common
substance after oxygen, silicon is
impervious to magnetic attraction
and influence and, more important
still, highly resistant to corrosion
and wear. Lighter and harder than
steel, it reduces inertia, requires no
lubricant and provides far greater
geometric freedom, i.e. opportuni-
ties to turn out new and complex
shapes.
