Overview of AlphaQuiz
SmartApplet System
Introducing AlphaQuiz
AlphaQuiz®SmartApplet®System automates the administration of
classroom quizzes, letting you design and store quizzes on a
computer, administer the quizzes on a classroom set of AlphaSmart
devices, and retrieve the results to your computer for automatic
grading and reporting.
Important: In this guide, the term AlphaSmart device refers to both
AlphaSmart 3000s and Neos. It does not refer to the Dana line of
products made by AlphaSmart.
Because teachers and students use different components of the
system, AlphaQuiz operates on both a desktop computer and on
AlphaSmart devices. The task of creating, administering, and
managing quizzes with AlphaQuiz is as follows:
1. The teacher creates quizzes using a desktop computer, then
downloads a particular quiz into students’ AlphaSmart devices.
2. Students take the quiz on the AlphaSmart devices.
3. The teacher retrieves quiz responses to the desktop computer,
then grades them and prints reports.

AlphaQuiz software
The software you’ll use to write, give, grade, and manage tests is
divided into three functions, as follows:
AlphaQuiz workflow
In general, you’ll follow a logical series of tasks in order to create,
administer, and grade quizzes. Once you’re comfortable with
AlphaQuiz, you can jump into the process at any point.
Creating, administering, and grading a quiz
The steps below summarize the entire quiz process from beginning
to end.
1. Use QuizDesigner™on your computer to create and save a new
quiz.
2. Connect AlphaSmart devices to an AlphaHub®(or connect
devices one at a time to your computer with a direct USB cable).
3. Use QuizManager™on your computer to select the quiz you want
students to take.
4. Set a quiz access password (if desired).
5. Send the quiz to students’ AlphaSmart devices.

QuizManager Use this application on a computer to
download quizzes to devices, retrieve and
grade responses from devices, assign
question points, compile statistics, and print

6. Students take the quiz using their AlphaSmart devices.
7. When finished, students connect AlphaSmart devices to an
AlphaHub (or to your computer one at a time using a direct USB
cable connection).
8. Use QuizManager on your computer to retrieve student
responses.
9. Create a new response set document, or integrate student
responses into an existing response set, and save the document.
10. QuizManager automatically grades true/false, multiple choice,
and short answer questions. (Short Answer questions cannot be
auto-graded unless you enter one or more correct answers when
you create the quiz)
11. Grade essay questions and any other ungraded questions
manually in one of two ways:
•Onscreen
•Use a printed grading sheet, which you print as a report from
QuizManager
12. Enter scores for manually-graded questions into QuizManager.
13. Print Corrected Quiz reports and hand out to students.
14. Print a Quiz Summary report for your teacher records.
15. Print a Statistics report for your teacher records.
