CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
1.1 HOW TO READ AND USE THE USE AND
MAINTENANCE MANUAL
This Use and Maintenance Manual provides
information on the utilisation, installation and
maintenance of electronic steam generators VAP 8,
VAP 8A and water softener AD 8, made by Zhermack
S.p.A.
• The equipment must be used in compliance
with that specified in this Manual: it is therefore
recommended that the manual is read carefully
prior to installation and start-up. Make sure that
you read the entire manual and pay particular
attention to messages written in bold type or
items highlighted by boxes and/or symbols, which
highlight dangerous situations or requiring
caution (see paragraph 1.2).
• The respect of standards and recommendations
shown in this Manual will ensure safe use of the
equipment and appropriate interventions on the
same.
• The “Use and Maintenance Manual” is an integral
part of the equipment: it should therefore be
kept together with the equipment so that it
can be consulted as and when necessary (in a
secure dry place away from sunlight, atmospheric
agents, etc.) throughout the working life of the
equipment, even when the equipment is sold or
finally dismantled.
• It is advised to keep the Manual constantly
updated, integrating any amendments, additions
or modifications made by the Manufacturer. Any
notes or comments should be made on the blank
pages at the rear of the Manual (see Attachments:
Notes).
• Use the Manual in a way that its content is not
damaged.
• Do not remove, tear or write on the Manual for
any reason.
• If the Manual is lost or damaged and therefore
becomes illegible, request a new Manual from the
Manufacturer.
This “Use and Maintenance Manual” is aimed
at operators in order to allow correct use of the
product. The Manual contains all useful information
for declared used of the equipment; in particular
the operator will find instructions and indications
regarding:
• correct installation of the equipment;
• a functional description of the equipment and all
parts;
• commissioning;
• correct programmed maintenance;
• attention to the most elementary safety and
accident-prevention regulations.
This Manual is divided into 9 chapters, each
referring to a specific subject inherent to the entire
equipment.
The attachments are found at the rear of the
manual. They complete the documentation.
1.2 TERMS AND SYMBOLS USED
It is fundamental that maximum attention is
paid to the following symbols and their meaning
because they highlight important information
such as, critical situations, practical advice or
straightforward information.
Consult this page if in doubt regarding the meaning
of the symbol when reading the Manual.
• Any operations carried out without compliance
to instructions or tampering with equipment
parts, which can cause serious injury to persons,
will be highlighted with:
DANGER!
This symbol refers to Safety Standards that
MUST be followed in order to guarantee
your safety and that of others and to
prevent damage to the equipment.
• Critical situations concerning dangerous areas,
situations or operations in which failure to comply
with the instructions may render the warranty
null and void, cause damage to equipment,
connected components or the surrounding area,
are highlighted by the symbol:
ATTENTION!
This symbol refers to Safety Standards that
must be followed carefully in order to
guarantee your safety and that of others
and to prevent damage to the equipment.
• Any operations carried out without compliance
to instructions or tampering with equipment
parts, which can cause damage to the equipment
rendering the warranty null and void, will be
highlighted with:
PROHIBITED!
This symbol calls attention to operations
that are prohibited.
• Any general information and/or useful advice
referring to any subject, will be highlighted with:

CHAPTER 2: GENERAL INFORMATION
2.1 LIABILITY
Failure to comply with the instructions contained
in this Use and maintenance manual relieves the
Manufacturer from any liability.
For any information not included or that cannot
be deduced from the Manual, consult the
Manufacturer directly.

In particular, if equipment maintenance is carried
out in a way that is not in compliance with the
instructions supplied, or in a way to jeopardise
integrity or modify features, Zhermack S.p.A. is
relieved from any liability inherent to safety of
persons and faulty operation of the equipments.
2.2 WARRANTY: GENERAL STANDARDS
Find the Warranty Certificate and the Identification
Form attached to this Use and Maintenance
Manual, which must be filled in completely.
Generally the warranty is rendered null and void
by the following:
• improper use of the equipment;
• incorrect installation;
• negligence of envisioned maintenance;
• modifications or interventions not authorised by
the Manufacturer (especially on safety devices);
• use of non-original spare parts.
The customer is responsible for ensuring
that the product delivered to the
manufacturer is properly packaged. The
manufacturer is not liable for any defects,
malfunctions or damage to the product due
to the use of packaging that is not suitable
or of the same or higher quality than that
used for the original delivery.
As of this moment Zhermack S.p.A. is
relieved from all liability if any type of
modification or tampering is made on the
equipment without previous written
authorisation from the Manufacturer.
Consequently, any repairs made by
unauthorised staff, use of non-original
spare parts or failure to comply with the
installation standards specified in this
manual shall immediately render the
warranty null or void.
2.3 AUTHORISED STAFF
The staff in charge of the equipment is divided into
the following categories:
Operator - user
Person trained to use the equipment. Person trained
in use of the equipment. Performs all tasks involved
in operation of the device, such as:
use, cleaning, inspection and simple interventions
linked to normal equipment use.
The operator-user must operate with the equipment
mounted according to that stated in this manual.
Before using the equipment or carrying out
any intervention on it, the operator must
read the entire manual carefully. This
manual has been drawn up to provide the
user with essential information on rational,
safe use of the equipment. The user must
comply with the information given at all
times. The user must also use the worksheets,
attached to this manual, to keep a record of
maintenance interventions, component
replacement as well as make notes regarding
anomalous functioning.
Maintenance technician authorised by Zhermack
S.p.A.
Person who operates in all operating conditions and
at all safety levels to perform repairs/ mechanical
and electric adjustments, periodic preventive
maintenance and replacement of any components.
2.4 GENERAL SAFETY PROVISIONS
The operator must comply with the advice and
warnings given below in order to ensure safe, long-
lasting equipment performance:
• do not allow untrained staff to use the equipment;
• prepare an optimal worktop, making sure that
the operational space is free from obstacles, clean
and has suitable lighting;
• avoid distractions when using the equipment;
• it is prohibited to work objects with features
different from those for which the equipment has
been designed;
• in the event of a malfunction follow the advice
given in this manual; if in doubt, stop the
equipment and contact your Authorised After-
Sales Centre immediately;
• do not open equipment compartments containing
electric parts;
• before carrying out any cleaning, routine and/or
extraordinary maintenance, make sure that the
equipment has been unplugged from the mains
power supply;
• do not replace the power supply cable or tamper
with the supplied plug; to replace the same due
to damage or wear, only contact the Authorised
After-Sales Centre;
• always make sure that there are no foreign bodies
inside the work area. These could prevent damage
to the equipment and/or injury to the staff;
• do not use petrol or flammable solvents
as detergents; use only non-flammable, non-
corrosive and non-toxic substances. (see par. 8.1).
• Never use a malfunctioning equipment and always
inform the Maintenance Manager of any faults;
• High temperature steam can cause burns where
the unit is used improperly.
• Do not direct the jet of steam from the gun at
sources of electricity and/or at people.
• (VAP 8) never unscrew the water filler plug if
there is steam in the boiler.
• If you do not intend to use the equipment for
some time always disconnect it from the power
supply.

• VAP 8A electronic steam generator with direct
connection to mains water supply (or to an
external tank), designed for steam cleaning
or hot water cleaning of semi-finished
odontotechny products.
• AD 8 water softener, indispensable where the
VAP 8A steam generator is connected directly to
the mains water supply.

3.3 DESCRIPTION OF THE COMPONENTS

A valve knob (25) is installed on the AD 8 water
softener: this can be adjusted to four different
positions:
POSITION 1: Used during routine operation.
POSITION 2: Used during steam release and
salt (1 kg) loading for softener
regeneration.
POSITION 3: Used during regeneration.
POSITION 4: Used during backflow.
3.4 IDENTIFICATION DATA
Fig. C: the equipment described in this manual has
a plate giving identification data of the same and
the Manufacturer:
• Have the machine serviced by the Manufacturer at
least once a year.
• (VAP 8A) if the overpressure warning light comes
on repeatedly, switch off the machine via the main
switch and contact an Authorised Service Centre.
• (VAP 8A) if the safety valve opens, switch off
the machine via the main switch and contact an
Authorised Service Centre.
• The AD 8 water softener has been designed to
operate at a working pressure of between 1 and 8
bar and must only be supplied with cold drinking
water.
• To regenerate the water softener use only NaCl;
acid or base substances, such as solvents and
various chemical products must not be used.
• The resins contained in the water softener are
necessary for proper operation and therefore
must not be removed.
• The water softener must be installed in indoor
areas with an ambient temperature higher than
0°C so as to prevent freezing of the water.
• Install the water softener in a place where it is
protected from accidental knocks: this prevents
damage to the cover, valves and taps.
• To prevent damage to the water infeed pump
make sure that water pressure does not exceed
3-4 bar. It is advisable to use a pressure reducer
calibrated between 1 and 2 bar.
• Wear protective gloves and eye goggles when
using the steam generator.
• Personnel using the steam generator must
wear protective eye goggles.
No other persons must be allowed near
the work area as they could be hit by
flying dirt, dust or steam.
• Zhermack S.p.A. cannot be held responsible
for any damage to the equipment owing
to incorrect maintenance performed by
unskilled staff or maintenance that does
not comply with that stated in this manual.
• As of this moment Zhermack S.p.A. is
relieved from any injury/damage to
persons/objects that should occur
following any different use and use not
declared in this manual.
In the event of a fire - no matter how small
- inside the equipment or nearby, only use
powder extinguishers. Do not use water.
CHAPTER 3: DESCRIPTION OF THE EQUIPMENT
3.1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE EQUIPMENT
This manual describes the following equipment
items:
• VAP 8 electronic steam generator with manual
water fill, designed for the steam cleaning of
semi-finished odontotechny products.
