1 Replacing a Hard Drive of Clustered NAS
Engine Node
Prerequisite
Before removing or installing any hardware, disconnect related cables and peripheral devices.
It is recommended that you backup important data to avoid data loss.
Precautions
WARNING
Before attempting to remove or install a drive while the system is running, see the documentation
for the storage controller card to ensure that the host adapter is configured correctly to support
hot-swap drive removal and insertion.
Do not turn off or reboot your system while the drive is being formatted. Doing so can cause a
drive failure.
Use only drives that have been tested and approved for use with the SAS backplane board.
Procedure
Step 1 Removing a hard drive.
1. Press the button on the front of the drive carrier to release the carrier release handle.

2. Open the drive carrier release handle to release the drive.
3. Slide the hard drive out until it is free of the drive bay.
NOTE
To maintain proper system cooling, all empty hard-drive bays must have drive blanks installed.
4. If applicable, install the bezel.
Step 2 Installing a hard drive.
WARNING
When installing a hard drive, ensure that the adjacent drives are fully installed. Inserting a hard-
drive carrier and attempting to lock its handle next to a partially installed carrier can damage the
partially installed carrier's shield spring and make it unusable.
WARNING
To prevent data loss, ensure that your operating system supports hot-swap drive installation. See
the documentation supplied with your operating system.
1. If present, remove the front bezel.
2. If a drive blank is present in the bay, remove it.
3. Press the button on the front of the drive carrier and open the handle.
4. Insert the hard-drive carrier into the drive bay until the carrier contacts the backplane.
5. Close the handle to lock the drive in place.
6. If applicable, install the bezel.
