*The DeGERM-inator has not been tested yet on the COVID-19 Coronavirus. It has been laboratory tested against common household bacteria and other common
viruses. UV-C is a suggested method of sanitizing from the CDC, especially for Filtering Facepiece Respirators (FFRs). Learn more about COVID-19 and prevention

HOW THE DEGERM-INATOR WORKS
The DeGERM-inator produces short-wave (UV-C) ultraviolet (UV) light.
This invisible light has a higher energy content than the visible light we
can perceive. UV light occurs naturally as part of the light from the sun
that we see every day. Most of this UV-C remains in the stratosphere.
Using short-wave UV irradiation to deactivate microorganisms has
been studied extensively since the 1930s. Now the DeGERM-inator
harnesses the germicidal effect of UV-C light and puts it to use upon
demand.
The DeGERM-inator is particularly effective in deactivating microbes
because it generates short-wave UV light at 254 nanometers (nm)
wavelength. Damaging the DNA causes the organism to die, or renders
it unable to reproduce, and thus harmless. Some viruses and
microorganisms are more susceptible than others to short-wave UV
light, so the amount of UV needed to deactivate them can vary
considerably. See the table on our website for a list of common viruses
and microorganisms, and their susceptibility to the DeGERM-inator.*
NOTE: Upon receiving your DeGERM-inator, it will arrive with
foam and tape to secure the socket. Please remove the foam and
tape before using the lamp.
USES
The DeGERM-inator can kill or render harmless many germs, viruses,
microorganisms, or other pathogens. Shine the DeGERM-inator
one-half inch (1.3 cm) or less from the surface for 6 to 8 seconds to
effectively deactivate the majority of viruses and microorganisms that
may be present. It can help in your efforts to avoid catching or
transmitting viral conditions such as colds and flu, as well as other
bacterial infections and illnesses caused by disease-causing
pathogens.
Use the DeGERM-inator on nonporous surfaces such as:
• toilet seats, flush and sink handles, sinks, and knobs
• plastic toys
• keys, eyeglasses, and other personal items
• ATM touch screens
• computer keyboards and mouse devices
• mobile devices
In addition, the DeGERM-inator can deactivate most
microorganisms, germs, and viruses in water. See “To Purify Water”
on back page.
NOTE: DO NOT USE ON FOOD! The DeGERM-inator should
not be used to disinfect food items. The beam cannot penetrate
deeply enough to ensure that any pathogens internally within the
food will be deactivated.
HOW TO USE THE DEGERM-INATOR
CAUTION: Remember to use the DeGERM-inator responsibly.
Always be sure to turn the DeGERM-inator away from eyes and
bare skin. Although the UV-absorbing gold light shield helps to
protect the user from UV-C radiation, the light coming directly
from the unshielded UV-C emitter can pose a danger to skin
and eyes. Reddening or burning of the skin, similar to
sunburn, can occur when skin is overexposed to short-wave
UV light. Never look directly into the lamp when it is in
operation. Painful, temporary inflammation of the outer
membrane of the eye (the conjunctiva) could result.
To turn on the DeGERM-inator, use the activator pin attached to
the cord to slide the child-resistant power switch from O(off) to
I(on).
Always turn off the DeGERM-inator when not in use.
The UV-absorbing gold light shield helps to protect the user while
allowing the user to see that the UV emitter is activated. Hold the
DeGERM-inator one-half inch (1.3 cm) or less from the surface to
be treated, and shine the light for a period of 6 to 8 seconds to kill
or deactivate up to 90% of the majority of common viruses and
micro-organisms. See the table on our website for a list of common
viruses and microorganisms, and the exposure time the
DeGERM-inator requires to treat for them.
If a large area must be treated, scan the area slowly to expose the
entire area to the DeGERM-inator’s UV-C light for the required
6 to 8 seconds.
The DeGERM-inator will work best on smooth, nonporous surfaces.
Porous surfaces have too many areas that effectively shade viruses
and microorganisms from the lamp’s UV-C irradiating beam.
