2 Safety information
2.1 Intended use
The Lector85x image-based code reader is a SICK 4Dpro sensor. It is used for auto‐
matic, stationary identification and decoding of codes on moving or stationary objects.
The device reads 1D codes (bar codes, stacked codes) and 2D codes (matrix codes). In
read mode, the device transmits the read results via the host interface to a higher-level
computer (e.g., PLC) for further centralized processing.
The device is designed for use in industrial and logistics areas, and meets the require‐
ments for industrial ruggedness, interfaces and data processing.
SICK AG assumes no liability for losses or damage arising from the use of the product,
either directly or indirectly. This applies in particular to use of the product that does not
conform to its intended purpose and is not described in this documentation.
2.1.1 Operating restrictions
NOTE
Radio interference may occur when the device is used in residential areas!
■Only use the device in industrial environments (EN 61000-6-4).

To ensure compliance with the specified IP65 enclosure rating of the device during
operation, the following requirements must be met: If these requirements are not met,
the device does not fulfill any specified enclosure rating.
•The cables plugged into the electrical connections must be screwed tight.
•Any electrical connections that are not being used must be sealed with a tightly-
fastened protective cap (as in the delivery condition).
•The cover on the top of the device is closed.
•The optics protection hood must be screwed tightly onto the device.
2.1.3 Cover on the device
NOTICE
Risk of product damage if cover is open!
In open state, the device does not conform to a specified enclosure rating.
