Untold centuries ago the Vadrigar, the mysterious Arena Masters, constructed the Arena Eternalfor their own infernal amuse-

ment. Virtually nothing is known of these beingsexcept that theysavor the carnage and clamor of battle. As such, they have

stockedthearenawiththegreatestwarriorsofalltime.Andyouhavejustjoinedtheirranks.

As a gladiatorin theArena Eternal, you must not only survive, butalso wineach and every battleagainstever more powerful

opponents. Don’t worry about getting “fragged,” the Vadrigar won’t be cheated of their favorite sport by a little thing like

death.Those who fall are instantly restored to life and immediately thrust back into the battle, perhaps a little wiser fortheir

misfortunes.

Whenthedust,blood, andgibssettle, allwarriorswillhaveearned the righttobattle again,providingfurther entertainment for

theVadrigar.But onlythewarriorwhohas fraggedthe mostfoeswillbe laudedasthewinner.The victoriousgladiatoradvances

toamorechallengingarrayofarenas,until,atlast,heorshefacesXaero,LordoftheFinalArena.

Insingle-player mode,QuakeIIIArenaissplitintofive tiers offourarenas each.In ordertoprogresstothenexttier,a gladiator

hastobevictoriousinallfourarenas.Finishingsecondorthirdwon’tdo—youmustemergeastheclearwinner.

While the rules are a little different in multiplayer (network,online, and split screen) games, there is oneimportant rule that

sumsupyourlifeas agladiatorintheArenaEternal:

TheArenaEternalisanextra-dimensionalstructurecreatedby theVadrigarandpopulatedwiththegreatest warriorsin

all oftime and space. Inorder to survive there,you’ll need to knowa littlebit aboutyour enemies,weapons, andthe

environmentin whichyou’llbefighting.

Inadditiontoyou,thereare32computer-controlledgladiatorsresidinginthearena.Eachofthemisadeadlywarriorwithhis

orherownpersonalityandtactics.Somearetougherthanothers,asyou’llquicklylearninbattle.

Anarki(CybronicHuman):Alwaysseekinganedge,thiscyber-boardsurferpaidwithhishumanityfor

aseeminglyendlessarrayofcybronicimplants.

Angel(HumanoidRobot):Althoughcertainlynotaclassicalbeauty,Angelwas

createdbya sculptorto behisidealcompanion.Shequicklyprovedherselfto

bea creatureofhate,notlove—killinghermakerina berserkfury.

turningherintoabarely-containedbundleof energy.

Sorlag(ReptiloidAlien):ThismercenarySorgmerchantlongago

resolvedto dowhateverittookto getahead,nomatterhowmany

othershadtodieinordertolinehercoffers.

Stripe(Human):Raisedonthemeanstreetsofapost-apocalypticcity,Stripeavoidedcrimeand

drugsbybeingtougherthanthegangsandpushers.

RocketLauncher:Therocketsfiredby thisheavyweapon

targetsatonce.Becarefulwhenusingthisweapon,since

it’s easytoincludeyourselfintheexplosion!

LightningGun:Themostunusualweaponinthearena,

thelightninggununleashesapowerfulstrokeofelectrici-

tyat itstarget.Despiteitsshortrange,nothinglookscool-

erthanthelightninggun!

RailGun:Thishighlyaccurateweaponusesalinearaccel-

eratortothrowa depleteduraniumslugatanincredible

rateofspeed.Thegun’s acceleratormustrecharge

betweenshots,causingadelaybeforeitcanbefired

again.

BFG-10K:Anevolutionoftheplasmagun,theBFG-10Kis

thedreamweaponofeverygladiatorinthearena.It

hurlsdevastatinglypowerfulburstsoffusingplasmato

mowdown enemies.

10 Gladiators inthe Arena Eternal have a widevarietyof weaponsavailableto them.At thestartof every match(or after

they’ve been fragged), all combatants are armed only with a machine gun and gauntlet. Depending on the arena

they’re battling in, other weapons may be available. Ammunition for eachweapon can usually be found in the same

arena.Collectaweapon(oritsammunition)byrunningthroughit.

Gauntlet:Thegauntletcombinesawhirlingsawbladewithapowerfulelectricalchargetocreatea

deadlyclose-combatweapon.Unliketheotherweapons,thegauntletneedsnoammunition,so it’s

alwaysreadytogo.

MachineGun:Althoughnotparticularlypowerful,thisweapon

hasa highrateoffireandcanbeusedtoblanketanareawitha

suppressinghailofbullets.

Shotgun:Oneofthemostcommonweaponsscatteredthroughout

thearenas,theshotgundeliversaninstantlyimpactingshowerof

heavypellets.Reloadingcausesashortdelaybetweenshots.

PlasmaGun:Thispowerfulenergyweaponunleashesadeadly

streamofplasmapulsesthatrapidlyconsumeitsenergysupply.

GrenadeLauncher:Thetime-fusedgrenadesfiredbythisweapon

areincrediblypowerfulandhaveawideblastradius.

12 TherearethreetypesofarmoravailableintheArenaEternal.Atthestartofamatch,youwon’thaveany,soyou’ll

havetolookforit.Althoughthenormalmaximumarmorratingyoucanhaveis100,someimprovementsallowyou

toincreaseitbeyondthislimit,uptoamaximumof200.Wheneveryourarmorratingis above100,itwillgradually

countdownuntilitreachesthatmark,even ifyouaren’ttakingdamage.Yourcurrentarmorratingisdisplayedtothe

rightofyourcharacter’sface.

ArmorShard:Thesefragmentsimproveyourarmorratingby 5points,increasingit even beyond

thenormalmaximumof 100 points.

CombatArmor:Donningayellowcombatarmorvestimprovesyourarmorratingby50points.

HeavyArmor:Asuitofredheavyarmorwillincreaseyourarmorratingby100points.

There’sno wayaroundit:you’regoingtogethurtorevenfraggedrunningaroundthearena.Youcantellhowbadly

woundedyouarebylookingattheHealthscoredisplayedbelowyourcharacter’sface.Atthestartofeveryevent,all

gladiatorsbeginwithhealthscoresof125(whichcountsdownto100).Duringthecourseofplay,it’spossibleto

increaseyourhealthbeyondthisvalue,althoughitwillgraduallycountdownto100.Cross-shapedhealthbonusesare

scatteredthroughoutmostarenas.Restoreyourhealthbyrunningthroughthem.

Green:Each green crossyou collectwill add5points to yourhealth (evenbeyond

yourmaximum!).

Yellow:Ayellowcrossadds25pointstoyourhealth,increasingitupto, butnot

beyondyourmaximumratingof100.

Gold:Everygoldhealthcrossyoupickupadds50pointstoyourhealth,up toits

maximumratingof100.

Red/BlueFlag:WhencompetinginaCapturetheFlagevent,eachteamis

givena standardtoguard.Youscorepointsbygrabbingtheenemybanner

andcarryingitbacktoyourownbase.

Inadditiontoweapons,armor,andhealthbonuses,combatantswillfindmanyusefulitemsscatteredaroundthearena.

Thesecanbepickedupbyrunningoverthem.Therearetwotypesofitems:power-upsandcarrieditems.

Power-ups areitemsthat take effect theinstant you touch them.Theyremain in effectfor a short time, which iscounted

downonyourscreen,andthenexpire.

BattleSuit:Thisgoldenshellprotectsthewearerfromlava,slime,drowning,andotherhostile

conditions(includingsplashdamagefromweapons).Becareful.EvenaBattleSuitwon’tpro-

tectyoufromtheFogofDeathor theVoid!

Flight:A Flightpackisa smallanti-gravitygeneratorallowingagladiatortopropelhimorher-

selfthroughtheairwithminimaleffort.Flightpacksareonlyavailableinmultiplayergames.

Haste:Thistachyonacceleratorcreatesabubbleofcompressedtime,greatlyincreasingthe

gladiator’s movementspeedandrateoffire.

Invisibility:Thisunitbendslightarounditsuser, makingagladiatorverydifficulttosee.

However,muzzleflashesandpower-upglowsarestillfullyvisible.

MegaHealth:WhenyoupickupaMegaHealth,yourhealthisincreasedby 100points(even

beyondyourmaximum).

QuadDamage:WhenyouscoopupaQuadDamage,yourweaponsaresuperchargedfora

briefperiodoftime.

Regeneration:WhenyougrabtheRegeneration,yourhealthwillgraduallyincreaseuntilit

reaches200ortheeffecttimesout.

Someitemsarepickedupandcarriedwithyourgladiatoruntilyouchoosetoactivatethem.It’simportanttoremember

thatyou canonly have oneitem ata time.Beforeyou canpickup another, youhaveto usethe oneyou alreadyhave.

Onceactivated,the effectisinstantaneous.

Medkit:Thisbattlefieldmedicalkitcontainsawidearrayofhealingandpain-killingchemicals.Whenactivated,its

computerbraindiagnosestheuser’sinjuriesandinstantlyrestoresthegladiatortofullhealth(100).

Teleporter:A personalteleporterisasmallunitwiththeabilitytofoldspacearounditsuser.Whenactivat-

ed,it instantlytransportstheusertoa randompointinthearena.

Medalsmeasure and instantlyrewardoutstanding combat performance. When you(or another player)receive averbal

praiseaward, such as“Excellent!” a medal iconcorresponding to theaward is immediately displayedabove thegladia-

tor’sheadfora fewmoments before fading away.Yourmedalawards arealso displayedon-screenbriefly.Asthe match

goes on,and you earnadditional medals,the game showsall earned medals of thattype. At theend of the match, the

totalsforall awarded medalsin that match aredisplayed.Between matches,you cansee the grandtotalsforall medals

awardedtoyouinSinglePlayerMode sincethegame began.

Excellent–Awardedformakingtwofragswithin twoseconds.

Impressive–Awardedfor twoconsecutivehitswiththerailgun.

Frags– Awardedeachtimeyoumake100frags.

Accuracy–Awardedwhenyourpercentageofhits-to-shotsisgreaterthan50%.

Gauntlet –Awardedeachtimeyoumakeafragwiththegauntlet.

Perfect–Awardedwhenyouarevictoriousinan arenawithoutbeingfraggedevenonceyourself.

meritmention,othersareextremelydeadlymenacescapableofquicklyfraggingthereckless,andafewfallsomewhere

inthemiddle.

AccelerationPads:Accelerationpadsuseapowerful

artificialgravitationalfieldtoimpartlateralthrustto

anyonesteppingontothem.Thinkofthemas hightech

jumpramps.

BouncePads:Similartoaccelerationpads,abouncepaduses

apowerfulpulseofanti-gravityparticlestopropelanyone

whostepsonithighintotheair.

Doors:Doorsinthearenacomeinmanyshapesand

sizes.Mostopenwhenyoumovenearthem.Others

remaincloseduntilabuttonorothertriggeractivates

them.Astandarddoorwillopenifit’s shot.

Fogof Death:Theseswirlingcrimsonvaporsarehighlycausticandfaintlyradioactive.

Theydissolvefleshandwillquicklykillanygladiator,regardlessofarmororother

protection.

Fog: Despite the fact that it looks spooky, normal

fog isn’t dangerous. Of course, it obscures your

vision and can conceal enemies or hazards.

Gates:A gateisaportalallowinggladiatorstomove

instantlyfromonepartofthearenatoanother.

Lava:Insomearenas,gladiatorswillbeforcedtodeal

withstreamsorpoolsofmoltenrock.Anyonefoolish

enoughtostepintolavawithouttheprotectionofa

BattleSuit(seePower-Ups)willsufferanamazing

amountofdamage.

Teleporters: Ateleporter issimilar toa gate,allowing gladiators toinstantlytravelfrom

onepointinthearenato another.Youcan’tseewhereateleporter leads,however, until

youstepintoit.

Triggers:Triggersoftentaketheformofabuttonorpressureplate.Whenactivated,theycause

somethingtohappen(usuallynearby).Sometriggersactivate whentouched,othersmustbefiredon.

Voids:Fallingoffcertainplatformswillcauseyoutoplummettoyourdeath. Other

locationscontainTubesthatwillteleportyoutoasaferplace. Tofindoutwhichplaces

aresafe,trynottolearnthehardway.
