1.0 Introduction
The RL-DBS Digital Baby Scale provides precise weighing of babies. Highly sophisticated microprocessor
technology allows accurate, reliable, and repeatable weighments every time. Movement compensation
technology eliminates errors caused by spontaneous movement of the baby and the weight display can be
displayed in pounds/ounces or in kilograms.
This manual can be viewed and downloaded from the Rice Lake Weighing Systems web site at
www.ricelake.com/health. Rice Lake Weighing Systems is an ISO 9001 registered company.

With the RL-DBS Digital Baby Scale, there are certain precautions that should be taken to prevent injury to the
baby and damage to your scale. Please follow these instructions carefully;
• Do not transport the scale while the infant is on the weighing tray.
• Do not drop the scale or subject it to violent shocks.
• For accurate weighing, the scale must be placed on a flat, stable surface.
• For accurate weighing, verify proper operation according to the procedure described in this manual
before each use.
• Do not use around flammable liquids.
• Operation at other voltages and frequencies than specified could damage your equipment.

4Technical and Operating Instructions
The RL-DBS Digital Baby Scale is pre-calibrated from the factory.
Use the following steps to set up your RL-DBS Digital Baby Scale when you initially power it up.
1. To operate the unit using the AC adaptor, plug the AC adaptor cable into the back of the scale as shown
in Figure 2-1, and the AC adaptor plug into a power source.
2. Press the ON/TARE key to turn on the scale.
3. When the self test function is complete, the digital display should read: 0:00.00 if set up in Lb/Oz or 0.00
if set up to read in Kg.
4. Place a weight (not exceeding 40 lb) on the scale. The weight calculation is complete once the motion
indicator turns on.
5. Press the LB/KG key to select the weight mode, either in pounds/ounces or kilograms.
6. Remove the weight from the scale. If you want to view the weight that was just on the scale, press the
RECALL key.
If the setup procedure failed, refer to the troubleshooting section of this manual. If the problem is not
resolved, refer to a qualified service provider.

the surface on which the scale is positioned. The weight calculation is complete once the motion
indicator turns on ( ).
4. Press the ON/TARE key to tare the weight of the pad or other accessory that is on the weighing tray. The
display should return to zero.
5. Place the infant on the scale. The weight calculation is complete once the motion indicator turns

Technical and Operating Instructions - Calibration 5
5.0 Calibration
To perform a calibration, connect the AC adaptor or install four (4) AA batteries and ensure that the scale is
sitting on a level surface.
The scale can be calibrated with either Lb or Kg weights. The unit is defaulted to calibrate with Lb weights so if
you are using LB weighs, proceed to Steps 1-7 (below). If you want to calibrate using Kg weights, perform Steps

A. Press and hold the LB/KG and the ON/TARE keys until the scale displays CAL. Release the keys and the
scale now displays the raw A/D counts.
B. Press the RECALL key and the display shows CAL with the LB indicator on. Press the LB/KG key to switch
between LB and KG and the display will now show CAL with the KG indicator on.
C. Press the ON/TARE key until the scale turns off.
D. Proceed to steps 1-7 shown in Table 5-1.
The following chart illustrates the calibration procedure.
