LOCATING CEILING JOISTS
1. Locate the wood ceiling joists and determine
the direction in which they are running in the
area where installation is desired. The top
channel can run parallel to the ceiling joists as
illustrated in 1A and 1B or perpendicular
(90 degrees) to the ceiling joists as illustrated
in 1C.

2A. FOR PARALLEL-TO-JOIST INSTALLATION:
Select 2 ceiling joists which are 48 in. apart.
Using the top channel as a pattern, mark holes
every 12 in. along the length of the top channel
(see Figure 2A). Pre-drill the holes with a 3/16 in.
size wood drill bit.
2B. FOR PARALLEL-TO-JOIST AND OVER-THE-
JOIST INSTALLATION:
For exposed joists, there is a second option of
installing the top channel over the top of the
joists (see Figure 2B). Follow same direction
as above to mark holes for pre-drilling.
IMPORTANT: Top channels must be mounted square to each other and the pre-drilled holes
must be solidly in the wood joists.
2C. FOR PERPENDICULAR-TO-JOIST
INSTALLATION:
Locate the joists along the length of the top
channel and mark holes at the joists locations
using the top channel as a pattern. The center
hole of the top channel to center hole of the
other top channel should measure exactly 48 in.
Pre-drill the marks with a 3/16 in. size wood drill

3. Assemble the 4 upright extensions with 2 arms
(B) and 1 sleeve (C) per upright. Determine the
height of the shelf you desire and ensure all
upright extensions are the same length if the top
channel is level.
If installing on angled joists, determine the length
for each upright extension to allow for a level
shelf installation. Use bolts (BB), and nuts (CC)
and washers (FF) as shown to assemble the
upright extensions to the desired height.
5. Install the top channels now with the attached
upright extensions using 4 lag screws (AA) for
each channel. Screw into the pre-drilled holes.
4. Attach each of the 4 upright extensions using
bolts (BB), nuts (CC) and washers (FF) to the
top channels as shown.
Ensure the head of the bolts (BB) are on the
inside of the top channel (A) and the nuts (CC)
are on the outside of the top channel (A).
IMPORTANT: The lag screws (AA) must be installed straight into the wood joist. Do not
over-tighten the lag screws.

6. Locate the bottom channels (D) and insert on
only one end a clevis pin (EE) and secure with
the R-clasp (DD). Be sure to insert the clevis
pin (EE) on the same ends of both bottom
channels (D) so that the other end is completely
open and ready to receive the slats to be
installed in Step # 9 below. Place the end caps
(G) onto the clevis pins (EE) as shown.
8. Snap the spacers (H) into 9 of the 10 slats (E)
into the holes on the side of the slats (see
Figure 8). Two spacers (H) per slat (E) are
needed. One slat will not require spacers.
The slat with no spacers attached will be installed
first.

9. Slide the first slat (E) which has no spacers
attached into the bottom channel (D) on both ends.
Ensure the slat groove is “locked” into the bottom
channel and not sitting on top of the channel
(see Figure 9). Repeat the process of sliding
each slat with the spacers side first into the
bottom channel to complete the shelf.
11. Install optional hanging bracket (F) as shown
for additional storage.
10. After all slats are properly installed into the
bottom channel, place the clevis pin (EE) into
the end of the bottom channels and insert the R
clasp (DD) into the pin to secure the slats in
position. Place the endcaps (G) onto the clevis
pins (EE) as shown.
IMPORTANT: Ensure all nuts, bolts and clevis pins are tight and secure. Do not load with
more than 250 lbs, evenly distributed. During first load of shelf, test the strength of the unit by
carefully loading. Remove valuable property underneath the unit during the initial load test.
