General Description
TheSimpleComfort®2201isintendedtooperateandiscompatiblewith24VACresidentialheatpumpswithupto
2-stageheat/2-stagecool.Itwilloperatewithmulti-stageheatpumpsystemsthataremanualchangeoverandhave
auxiliaryoremergencyheating.Therearenooptionalitemsrequiredforstandardinstallations.Thisthermostatisalso
compatibleasamasterthermostatinzonedsystemapplications.
TheSimpleComfort®2201willautomaticallycontroltheheatand/orairconditioningsystem.Whenusedproperly,this
thermostatcanreduceheatingandcoolingcoststhroughouttheyear.
• Alwaysturnoffpoweratthemainpowersourcebyunscrewingfuseorswitchingcircuitbreakertotheoffposition
beforeinstalling,removing,cleaning,orservicingthisthermostat
• Readalloftheinformationinthismanualbeforeinstallingthisthermostat
• Thisthermostatshouldbeinstalledonlybyaprofessionalcontractor
• Thisisa24VAClow-voltagethermostat;donotinstallonvoltageshigherthan30VAC

ELECTRICAL SHOCK HAZARD – Turn off power at the main service panel by removing the fuse
or switching the appropriate circuit breaker to the Off position before removing the existing
thermostat.
1. Turnoffpowertotheheatingandcoolingsystembyremovingthefuseorswitchingofftheappropriatecircuit
breaker.
2. Removecoverofoldthermostat.Thisshouldexposethewires.
3. Label the existing wires with the enclosed wire labels before removing wires.Seetablebelowforoldand
newlabelidentication.
4. Afterlabelingwires,removewiresfromwireterminals.
5. Removeexistingthermostatbasefromwall.
6. Refertothefollowingsectionforinstructionsonhowtoinstallthisthermostat.

ELECTRICAL SHOCK HAZARD – Turn off power at the main service panel by removing the fuse
or switching the appropriate circuit breaker to the Off position before removing the existing
thermostat.
IMPORTANT: Thermostatinstallationmustconformtolocalandnationalbuildingandelectricalcodesand
ordinances.
IMPORTANT: Thisthermostatiscompatiblewith100%lockoutsystems.Toresetthesystem,turnthermostat
toOffpositionforatleast60seconds.
Note:
Mountthethermostataboutvefeetabovetheoor.Donotmountthethermostatonanoutsidewall,
indirectsunlight,behindadoor,orinanareaaffectedbyaventorduct.
1. Turnoffpowertotheheatingandcoolingsystembyremovingthefuseorswitchingofftheappropriatecircuit
breaker.
2. PutMode switchinOffposition.
3. PutFan switchinAutoposition.
4. Toremovecover,insertandtwistacoinorscrewdriver
intheslotsonthesidesofthethermostat.
5. Putthermostatbaseagainstthewallwhereyouplantomountit(Besurewireswillfeedthroughthewireopening
inthebaseofthethermostat).
6. Marktheplacementofthemountingholes.
7. Setthermostatbaseandcoverawayfromworkingarea.
8. Usinga3/16”drillbit,drillholesintheplacesyouhavemarkedformounting.
9. Useahammertotapsuppliedanchorsinmountingholes.
10. Alignthermostatbasewithmountingholesandfeedthecontrolwiresthroughwireopening.
11. Usesuppliedscrewstomountthermostatbasetowall.

12. Insertstripped,labeledwiresinmatchingwireterminals.SeeWiringDiagramssectionofthismanual(Pages11-
24).
CAUTION!
:
Besureexposedportionofwiresdoesnottouchotherwires.
13. Tightenscrewsonterminalblock.Gentlytugwiretobesureofproperconnection.Doublecheckthateachwireis
connectedtotheproperterminal.
14. Sealholeforwireswithnon-ammableputtyorinsulation.
15. Replacecoveronthermostatbysnappingitinplace.
16. Turnonpowertothesystematthemainservicepanel.
17. Testthermostatoperationasdescribedinthefollowingsection.

Donotswitchsystemtocooliftheoutdoortemperatureisbelow50°F(10°C).Thiscandamage
theairconditioningsystemandmaycausepersonalinjury.
1. PuttheMode switchtoCoolposition.
2. Pressthe buttonuntilthetemperaturesettingisatleast3degreesbelowtheroom
temperature.Theairconditioningsystemandfanshouldturnonwithinafewseconds.
3. PuttheMode switchintheOffposition.Theairconditioningsystemshouldturnoff.
Thefanmayhaveadelay.
Note:
PressingtheResetbuttonwillbypassthe5-minuteanti-shortcycle
compressorprotection.

Note:
WhileinCoolorHeatmode,oncethethermostatturnsthesystemoff,abuilt-indelaykeepsthe
compressorfromturningonforabout5minutes.Thisprotectsthecompressor.
4. PuttheMode switchtotheHeatposition.
5. Pressthe buttonuntilthetemperaturesettingisatleast3degreesaboveroom
temperature.Theheatingsystemshouldturnon.
Note:
Thecompressormaynotturnonagainfor5minutes.
6. PuttheMode switchtotheOffposition.Theheatingsystemshouldturnoff.Onceagain
thefanmayhaveadelay.
7. PuttheFan switchtotheOnposition.Theblowerfanshouldturnon.
8. PuttheFan switchtotheAutoposition.Theblowerfanshouldturnoff.
Ifallfunctionsoperateproperly,thethermostatisinstalledcorrectly.
If the thermostat does not operate properly:
• Checkallwiringconnections
• SeeTroubleshooting(Page25)

TherearethreeLEDindicatorslocatedonthefrontofthethermostat.Theyaredesignedtoinformyouofthefollowing:
AUX (GREEN): Thisturnsonwhentheauxiliary(back-up)heatingisinoperation.Thisisthesecond(non-economy)
stageofheat.Itturnson2degreesbelowrststageandisnotadjustable.
CHECK (RED): Whenthisturnson,amalfunctionhasoccurredsomewhereintheheatpumpsystem.Pleasecontact
aqualiedservicetechnicianassoonaspossibletocheckyoursystem.
EMER (RED):This light turns on whenever the emergency heat is manually selected (system switch is in
the EMER position). While in the emergency heat mode, the heat pump compressor is off,
and the emergency heat (same as the auxiliary heat) maintains the setpoint temperature.
