SOFT WATER BASICS
Hardness
Exce amount of calcium and magne ium in water produce
hardne . A water oftener remove the majority of calcium
and magne ium to produce oftened water.
Hardne i mea ured in term of grain . (Thi grain
weight i derived from the average weight of a dry grain of
wheat.) When your water i te ted the grain hardne i
calculated and expre ed a grain per gallon (gpg). Thi
calculation, a well a the number of people in your hou ehold
will help determine what type and ize of water oftener will
mo t efficiently often your water.
Your water oftener contain an ion exchange
media ( ometime called re in) which remove the hardne
from water a it flow through the oftener tank. Eventually o
much hardne collect on the exchange media that the oft-
ener can no longer often water. At thi point it i con idered
"exhau ted". Regeneration i now nece ary.
Regeneration
To regenerate the exchange media, it mu t be rin ed with a
brine ( alt) olution. Thi remove the hardne from the ex-
change media and replace it with odium. The exchange media
i then ready to remove hardne from water. The hardne
mineral and exce brine olution are rin ed down the drain.
During the regeneration cycle the oftener i al o
backwa hed. Thi rever ing of the normal flow of water erve
to remove ediment which may have accumulated during the
oftening proce due to the filtering action of the exchange
media. Backwa hing al o loo en and fluff up the bed of
exchange media to in ure that during regeneration the brine
olution will come into contact with all the media.

Maintenance of Your Softener
Salt: Salt to a oftener i what ga oline i to a car. Not only mu t a oftener have alt, but it hould be the proper type to in ure
efficient recharging of the unit. A k your dealer what type of alt may be t uit your need . Alway have an adequate upply of alt on
hand. Check the alt level of your brine tank every couple of week initially to determine how much alt you u e - thi will depend on
how much water you u e. A a rule of thumb, with 20 gpg hard water, about a 1/2 lb. of alt per per on per day i u ed. In other word ,
a family of four u e 60 lb . of alt a month. If your hou ehold doe not u e much water, do not fill your alt keeper over 1/2 full, alt
bridging may occur in the brine tank. Thi may re ult in hard water due to ineffective regeneration. Fill the tank approximately three-
fourth full, with a minimum of 12” of alt. DO NOT USE Block Salt when the ProMate control i programmed with a brine tank prefill.
Block alt doe not di olve quick enough to provide a good regeneration.
Cleaning Salt Keeper: Salt keeper may require periodic cleaning. In pect the alt keeper at lea t once a year for buildup of
in oluble material . It i recommended to periodically clean the alt keeper no matter what kind of alt you are u ing. See page 9,
mi cellaneou #3 for detail on cleaning.
REMEMBER: Salt i the fuel to run your water oftener. Buy the best clean salt available.
Your water conditioner ha been de igned to adequately
handle up to 100 grain per gallon of hardne that might be
encountered a well a up to 2 ppm of Ferrou Bicarbonate
Iron. Thi i iron that i di olved in an oxygen-free water upply.
It i not vi ible to the eye in a fre hly drawn ample becau e the
water appear clear. But upon tanding in contact with air, the
ferrou iron will become oxidized to the ferric tate and tart to
precipitate a a reddi h brown floc. It can then be een and if
allowed to remain in the upply will cau e di colored water. In
order for your conditioner to remove the iron, air (oxygen) mu t
be kept from coming in contact with water until after it ha been
pa ed through the water conditioner. In ome ca e , additional
equipment may be required to treat water upplie having
pecial characteri tic , uch a : ferric hydroxide iron, iron bac-
teria, low pH, ta te and odor , etc. If any que tion hould exi t,
contact your dealer.
