Introduction

The streamer SDLT 160/320 GBYTE is a drive for magnetic tape cartridges with a storage capacity

of 160 Gbyte (without compression) or 320 Gbyte (with 2:1 compression).

Thanks to its performance capability (high capacity and rapid data transmission) the streamer is

ideally suited for data backup of network systems.

The streamer has a configurable SCSI interface and supports the following SCSI interface types:

•LVD (Low Voltage Differential)

•SE (Single Ended)

In order to operate the streamer, the computer must therefore have a SCSI host adapter and the

appropriate SCSI drivers must be installed.

This brief operating manual provides you with an overview of how to operate the streamer.

To install the drive, you need some knowledge of hardware. Make sure you observe the instructions

in the "Important notes" chapter of your computer's operating manual.

In the event of any problems occurring, please contact your sales outlet or our customer

service center.

Further information

For details of the drive mounting procedure refer to the Operating Manual for the computer.

Information on the SCSI interface is contained in the documentation of the SCSI host adapter.

For information on the required SCSI drivers and the backup software, refer to the software

documentation.

Additional information on the streamer SDLT 160/320 GBYTE is also provided in the manual "SDLT

Product Manual" on the Internet (http://manuals.fujitsu-siemens.com).

Notational conventions

The meanings of the symbols and fonts used in this manual are as follows:

!Pay particular attention to texts marked with this symbol. Failure to observe

this warning endangers your life, destroys the system, or may lead to loss of

data.

Supplementary information, remarks, and tips follow this symbol.

ÊText which follows this symbol describes activities that must be performed in

the order shown.

"Quotation marks" indicate names of chapters, disks, and terms that are being emphasized.

electronic office machines for use in an office environment. If you have any questions, contact your

sales outlet or our customer service center.

•This device has been developed for use in approved systems with a fire-proof casing (in

accordance with IEC 950 / EN 60950).

Please observe the notes on power loss and environmental conditions in the "Important notes"

chapter of the computer's operating manual.

•Please observe the safety information provided in the "Important notes" chapter in the

computer’s operating manual.

Manufacturer's note

CE certificate

The shipped version of this drive complies with the requirements of the EC Guideline

89/336/EEC "Electromagnetic compatibility".

Compliance was tested in a typical system configuration.

When installing the drive, observe the specific installation notes in the Operating

Manual or Technical Manual for the receiving device.

Notes on working with magnetic tape cartridges

Magnetic tape cartridges and cleaning cartridges for the streamer can be ordered directly

from:

IT Distribution Shop (formerly Siemens Plus Shop)

Telephone: 01805 / 252 723, Fax: 01805 / 252 724

Although magnetic tape cartridges do not require any special maintenance, some basic rules should

be followed:

!General

•The cartridges are not to be placed near magnetic fields.

•Avoid subjecting the magnetic tape cartridges to high temperatures or direct sunlight.

•Never touch the magnetic tape.

•Never drop the magnetic tape cartridges.

Check the magnetic tape according to the "SDLT Product Manual".

Also observe the notes in the "SDLT Product Manual".

When operating

•The cartridges are not to be operated in high-humidity and in dusty environments.

•Do not remove the magnetic tape cartridge from the drive while it is being read or

written.

•Do not switch off the system while a magnetic tape cartridge is being read or written.

Storage

•The cartridges are not to be stored in high-humidity and in dusty environments.

•Store the magnetic tape cartridges in an upright position, if possible.

Write protection

The magnetic tape cartridges have a slide switch which can be used to activate and deactivate write

protection.

Write protection is activated when the switch is moved to the left (arrow pointing down) and the

orange surface is visible.

Detailed information on the slide switch can be found in any cartridge box.

Cleaning notes

•If the yellow "Cleaning Required" indicator is illuminated, the read/write head on the drive must

be cleaned. Use the cleaning tape provided for this purpose.

•Remove the cleaning tape from the drive once cleaning has been completed.

•Do not use DLT cleaning cartridge for an SDLT drive.

•The cleaning cartridge can be used up to 20 times.

•Observe the notes in the "SDLT Product Manual".

Installing the streamer

!Please note the information provided in the operating manual of the computer or in the

"Safety and Ergonomics" booklet.

The following steps must be performed to install the streamer:

•Setting jumpers

•Mounting the streamer

•Connecting the streamer

The drivers required for operating SCSI drives are either part of the operating system or

are provided with the software.

Setting jumpers

The drive can be set by means of jumpers. The jumpers can be found on the rear of the drive.

Pin 1

1 = Connection for diagnostic purposes

2 = Plug-in jumper for Wide SCSI

configuration

3 = Plug-in jumper for Termination Power

4 = Plug-in jumper for SCSI address

5 = Connection for RS-422 (loader)

Pin 1 is drawn bold in each case.

Connection for diagnostic purposes

This connection is only for internal use.

Wide SCSI configuration

With this plug-in jumper you can configure the streamer for Wide SCSI.

Pin pair 1/2 inserted = 8-bit SCSI

Pin pair 1/2 not inserted = 16-bit SCSI (Wide SCSI)

SDLT 160/320 GBYTE

Default setting:

Pin pair 1/2 not inserted = Wide SCSI

Termination Power

The Termination Power jumper sets the power supply for the terminating resistors on the SCSI bus.

The terminating resistors can be provided with power by the streamer or the SCSI bus.

Pin pair 1/2 inserted = power supply from the streamer

Pin pair 1/2 not inserted = power supply from SCSI bus

Default setting:

Pin pair 1/2 not inserted = power supply from SCSI bus

SCSI address

Every device on the SCSI bus must have its own SCSI address (ID). The SCSI address for the

streamer is set using the pin pairs 1/2 to 7/8.

The streamer is set to the SCSI address 6 in the default setting (jumpers on pin pair 3/4 and pin pair

5/6 inserted). If pin pair 9/10 is inserted, the firmware setting will be bypassed and the value from

the jumper setting will be used.

SCSI address 7 is always reserved for the SCSI controller.

Connection for RS-422 (loader)

The connector is not in use.

Termination/terminating resistor

The required bus connection is always located on the end of the cable. The drive has no terminating

resistors of its own.

Installing the streamer

The streamer requires a 5 ¼" mounting location of full height. It can be installed horizontally or

vertically.

!When mounting the streamer, ensure that the ventilation slits on the streamer are kept

free.

ÊInstall the streamer as described in the Operating Manual or Technical Manual for the

computer.

Connecting the streamer

The ports can be found on the rear of the streamer.

ÊPlug the power supply cable (4-pin) into the power supply socket of the streamer (1).

ÊPlug the Wide SCSI cable (68-pin) into the Wide SCSI interface of the streamer (2).
