Introduction
The CheetahSwitch Workgroup-3024C is a high-density
switch thats perfect for moving arge workgroups from
conventiona 10Mbps Ethernet to mu tip e-segment
100Mbps Fast Ethernet. This switch de ivers dedicated
100Mbps inks to each attached LAN segment
(independent co ision domain) or any PC attached direct y
to the switch a with conventiona cab ing and adapters. It
comp ete y e iminates the bott enecks of shared 10Mbps Ethernet networks by
providing a wide bandwidth of up to 4.8 Gbps. This makes it idea for increasing
the throughput of interconnected Ethernet / Fast Ethernet hubs or server farms.
Installing the Switch
Before insta ing the switch, p ease verify that you have a the items isted under
Package Contents. If any of the items are missing or damaged, contact your
oca Accton distributor. A so be sure you have a the necessary too s and
cab ing before insta ing the switch.

Four rubber foot pads This Guide
AC power cord Owner registration card
Rack mount bracket kit
Description of Hardware
The CheetahSwitch Workgroup-3024C base unit contains 24 10/100BASE-TX
ports. A 100BASE-TX ports operate at 10 or 100 Mbps, support auto-negotiation,
and ha f or fu dup ex, so the transmission speed and mode wi be automatica y
set if this feature is a so supported by the attached device.
The fo owing figure shows the components of this switch:

Mounting the Switch
This switch can be p aced direct y on your desktop, or mounted in a rack.
Before you start insta ing the switch, make sure you can provide the right
operating environment, inc uding power requirements, sufficient physica space,
and proximity to other network devices that are to be connected. Verify the
fo owing insta ation requirements:
Power requirements: 100 to 240 VAC (±10%) at 50 to 60 Hz (±3Hz). The
switchs power supp y automatica y adjusts to the input vo tage eve .
The switch shou d be ocated in a coo dry p ace, with at east 10 cm. (4 in.) of
space at the front and sides for venti ation.
P ace the switch out of direct sun ight, and away from heat sources or areas with
a high amount of e ectromagnetic interference.
If you intend to mount the switch in a rack, make sure you have a the
necessary mounting screws, brackets, bo ts and nuts, and the right too s.
Check if network cab es and connectors needed for insta ation are avai ab e.
Stacking Switches on a Flat Surface
The CheetahSwitch can be stacked
anywhere there is enough f at space,
such as on a tab e or desktop.
1. Stick the se f-adhesive rubber foot
pads (that come with this package) on
each of the 4 concave spaces ocated on the
bottom of the first switch.
2. P ace the first switch on a firm f at surface where you want to insta the stack.
3. Repeat step 1 for each switch before stacking them. The rubber foot pads
cushion the switch against shock/vibrations and provide space between each
switch for venti ation.
Mounting Switches in a Rack
P ease comp y with the fo owing
instructions to ensure that your switch
is secure y mounted in the rack.
1. Use a standard EIA 19-inch rack.
2. Use the brackets and screws
supp ied in the rack mounting kit.
3. Use a cross-head screwdriver to attach
the brackets to the side of the switch.
4. Position the switch in the rack by ining up the ho es in the
brackets with the appropriate ho es on the rack, and then use the
supp ied screws to mount the switch in the rack.

Connecting the Switch System
The CheetahSwitch provides 24 RJ-45 ports on the unit. Each of these ports
support connection to 10Mbps Ethernet or 100Mbps Fast Ethernet, and supports
fu or ha f-dup ex operation. The transmission speed for each port is automatica y
set by the switch to match the highest speed supported by the connected device.
The transmission mode can be set for each port using auto-negotiation (if a so
supported by the attached device).
Note: If the device connected to any port on the switch must operate at full duplex,
then it must support auto-negotiation.
Making a Connection via an RJ-45 Station Port
You can connect any RJ-45 (MDI-X) station port on the switch to any device that
uses a standard network interface such as a workstation or server, or to a network
interconnection device such as a bridge or router (depending on the port type
imp emented).
1. Prepare the network devices you wish to network. Make sure you have
insta ed 10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX network interface cards for connecting to
the switchs RJ-45 (MDI-X) station ports.
2. Prepare straight-through shie ded or unshie ded twisted-pair cab es with
RJ-45 p ugs at both ends. Use 100Ω Category 3, 4 or 5 cab e for standard
10Mbps Ethernet connections, or 100Ω Category 5 cab e for 100Mbps Fast
Ethernet connections.
3. Connect one end of the cab e to the RJ-45 port of the network interface card,
and the other end to any avai ab e (MDI-X) station port on the switch. A the
RJ-45 ports support 10Mbps and 100Mbps Ethernet connections. When
inserting an RJ-45 p ug, be sure the tab on the p ug c icks into position to
ensure that it is proper y seated. Using the switch in a stand-a one
configuration, you can network up to 24 end nodes.
IDo not plug a phone jack connector into any RJ- 5 port. This may damage the
switch. Instead, use only twisted-pair cables with RJ- 5 connectors that conform
with FCC standards.
Notes: 1. Make sure each twisted-pair cable does not exceed 100 meters (328 feet).
2. We advise using Category 5 cable for all network connections to avoid any
confusion or inconvenience in the future when you upgrade attached
devices to Fast Ethernet.

Making a Connection via an MDI Daisy-Chain Port
To make a direct connection to another compatib e switch or hub, fo ow these
steps:
1. Use Port 24 on the switch, and set it to MDI for a daisy-chain connection.
3. Connect one end of the cab e to Port 24 MDI on the switch, and the other end
to any MDI-X station port on the other device. When inserting an RJ-45 p ug,
be sure the tab on the p ug c icks into position to ensure that it is proper y
seated.
Notes: 1. Alternatively, you can connect from an MDI-X port on the switch to an MDI
daisy-chain port on the other device. Or attach crossover cabling to
(MDI-X) station ports at both ends.
2. Make sure each twisted-pair cable does not exceed 100 meters (328 feet).
Restrictions on Cascade Length - The IEEE 802.3 standard recommends
restricting the number of hubs (i.e., repeaters) cascaded via twisted-pair cab e
to 4; whi e IEEE 802.3u provides even stricter recommendations for Fast
Ethernet. Therefore, when cascading devices other than this switch, p ease refer
to the accompanying documentation for cascade restrictions. However, note that
because switches break up the path for connected devices into separate co ision
domains, you shou d not inc ude the switch or connected cab ing in your
ca cu ations for cascade ength invo ving other devices.
Powering On the Switch
1. P ug the power cord into the power socket at the rear of the switch, and the
other end into a power out et.
2. Check the LED marked Power on the front pane to see if it is on. The unit wi
automatica y se ect the setting that matches the connected input vo tage.
Therefore, no additiona adjustments are necessary when connecting it to any
input vo tage within the range marked on the rear pane .
3. The switch performs a se f-diagnostic test upon power-on. (Note that this test
takes about 10 seconds to comp ete.)
Note: The unit supports a hot remove feature which permits you to connect/
disconnect RJ- 5 cables without powering off the switch and without
disrupting the operation of the devices attached to the switch.
