Expanse Water Heater

1.0 Application

The Whale Expanse Water Heater now comes in a LIN controlled system alongside our latest Room

Heater, Heat Air. The existing controls utilising the CBE Duo Control and iVan Control Panels have

been updated to manage this change. These changes were necessary to add the LIN communication

protocol as used in the Heat Air Room Heaters.

This information is applicable to OEM Expanse Water Heater models for the 2020 season and must

be read in conjunction with the main How To Guide, "HowTo_ExWtrHtr_v04_01_2018". Any chapter

references within this guide are regarding this How To Guide.

Please observe all Gas and Electrical warnings in section 1.2 in the aforementioned How To Guide

2.0 Updates for Duo Control

Electrical Connections when fitted with Whale® Duo Control Panel

Clear lockout procedure Duo Control Panel

Please refer to section 4 for information regarding the identification and clearing of lockout codes.

Remember, all lockouts are cleared only from the panel, there will be no accompanying reset button.

With the LIN system, whereas previous connections at the Heater were via a wiring loom, the connections are now via a

small communication PCB. Please refer to chapter 4.6 for a detailed view of how to replace the communication board.

You can see the board incorporates a RJ12 cable port and a power connector. No

reset button is present. Please see below for details of the connections/ overview.

There is still a wireless communication PCB in use for connections to the Water Heater. Please refer to chapter 4.6 for a

detailed view of how to replace the communication board.

You can see the board now incorporates a RJ12 cable port and an additional reset

button for the Heat Air Room Heater. White button is Expanse, red is Heat Air.

Clear lockout procedure iVan Control Panel

As the wireless communication is carried out for both heaters via the communication board on the

Expanse, a hard reset for either is now carried out by pressing the respective reset button on the

Expanse Water Heater.

The pop-up screen identifies the fault. As soon as you have completed the suggested actions on the

fault screens below, you must clear the fault code by following the instructions on screen and pressing

OK.

Check gas supply (1)

Ensure that there is gas in the gas bottle and

that there is no blockage in the gas line. At

temperatures below 5°C, use Propane gas

rather than Butane.

Please refer to chapter 4.1.1.3 for additional

recommended checks.

Check that the Expanse Water Heater is

completely full of water. Run the pump with one

hot tap open until water flows smoothly out of

the tap. Wait at least 10 minutes to allow the

Expanse Water Heater to cool.

Please refer to chapter 4.1.1.4 for additional

recommended checks.

Check voltage supply

Minimum operating voltage is 10.5V d.c.,

maximum is 15.9V d.c., when measured at the

Expanse Water Heater. Check battery voltage. If

between 10.5V d.c. and 15.9V d.c., check

connections between the Expanse Water Heater

and the battery.

Please refer to chapter 4.1.1.5 for additional

recommended checks.

Air pressure fault (5)

The Expanse Water Heater is not getting enough

air through the flues - check the flue ends

(outside the vehicle) and clear any

obstructions away from them. When the check

is complete, clear lockout by turning the

Master Switch ‘off’ then ‘on’, then press OK on

the iVan® Control Panel.

An internal fault has occurred. Clear

lockout by turning the Master Switch ‘off’

then ‘on’, pressing the white Reset Button on

the Expanse Water Heater then press OK on the

iVan® Control Panel.

Two faults have occurred at the same time

OR at least five or more lockout clearing

attempts have been unsuccessful. Clear

lockout by turning the Master Switch ‘off’

then ‘on’, pressing the white Reset Button on

the Expanse Water Heater then press OK on the

iVan® Control Panel.
