Incorrect operation can lead to personal
injury and damage to products or property.
Therefore, read through the Operator’s
manual very carefully before starting the
engine or performing any service work. If
there is still something which is unclear or
if you feel unsure about it, please contact
your Volvo Penta dealer for assistance.
This symbol is used in the Operator’s
manual and on the product, to call your
attention to the fact that this is safety infor-
mation. Always read such information very
carefully.
Safety texts in the instruction book have
the following order of priority:
WARNING! Warns for the risk of per-
sonal injury, major damage to product
or property, or serious malfunctions if
the instruction is ignored.
IMPORTANT! Is used to call attention
to things which could cause damage or
malfunctions to product or property.
NOTE! Is used to call attention to important
information, to facilitate work processes or
operation.
Addition to Operator’s manual D3
This Operator’s manual is an addition to the Opera-
tor's manual for D3. The additional material contains
user instructions that apply only to the SOLAS ver-
sion of D3.
IMPORTANT! Read through the instructions in
this manual and in the Operator’s manual for
the D3 before using your D3-SOLAS engine.

Presentation
Volvo Pentas D3-SOLAS engine is designed and
certied to fulll the demands made on marine safety
equipment according to directive 96/98/EG.
In order to fulll the demands of the directive, the fol-
lowing alterations and additions have been made to
the SOLAS-D3 (see also gure below):
1. Alteration: A bulkhead-mounted inclination relay
(shut down relay) is tted to the boat and connect-
ed to the engine electrical system.
Function: The engine stops automatically if the
boat capsizes.
IMPORTANT! The gradient relay must be posi-
tioned above the water line and aft, as centrally
as possible.
2. Alteration: A ball valve (tilt valve) is mounted be-
tween the crankcase ventilation lter and the air
lter in the boat.
Function: Prevents oil leakage from the engine if
the boat capsizes.
3. Addition: The glowplugs are connected.
Function: To fulll cold start requirement down to
-15°C (5°F).
4. Modication: Bulkhead-mounted fuel feed pump,
location above crankshaft centerline.
4
Instructions in case of a safety stop
If the engine has stopped automatically due to the
boat capsizing, it can be restarted again once the
boat's position in the water has stabilized. Follow the
starting procedure in the D3 Operator’s manual.
IMPORTANT! After an automatic safety stop, the
ignition is still turned on and must therefore be
turned off before attempting to start the engine
again.
Special demands for engine operation in
cold climates
To guarantee safe starting of the SOLAS-D3 in cold
climates, it is the boat owner's responsibility to ensure
that the following demands are fullled concerning oil,
batteries and engine heaters:
Oil
Use an oil with the correct viscosity for the tempera-
tures that the SOLAS-engine will be used in. See
table. See also instructions for the correct oil grade in
chapter “technical data” in the D3 Operator’s manual.
Battery
To manage cold starts, the starter battery shall have a
capacity of:
At least, 1 x 800 CCA / 120 Ah
Engine heater:
In order to manage cold starts in temperatures below
-15°C (5°F), the engine must be equipped with an en-
gine heater of at least 750 W.
IMPORTANT! Read the user instructions from
the supplier of the engine heater carefully before
you use your SOLAS-engine in a cold climate.
Viscosity (Refers to synthetic or semi-synthetic oils)
Note: The temperature values refer to stable ambient tem-
peratures.
Shut off the ignition after an
automatic safety stop!
5. Modication: Sealing compund added to pressure
sensor on charge air pipe.
Function: To fulll submerged engine requirement.
6. Addition: Silicone grease added to crankshaft/
crankshaft sealing.
Function: To protect sealing surface.

Care
The same care requirement applies to the D3-SOLAS
as is stated in the Operator’s manual for the D3, with
the addition of the following points.
WARNING! Before performing any work, read
carefully through the chapter “care” in the Opera-
tor’s manual for the D3. It contains instructions
for correct and safe working procedures.
IMPORTANT! When both operating hours and
calendar-based service intervals are given, main-
tenance shall be performed at the interval that
occurs rst.
After a dry test run (without seawater):
IMPORTANT! The impeller in the sea-water
pump is designed to rotate in water. At delivery,
the inside of the pump housing is lubricated to
protect the impeller during the rst dry start with-
out seawater. The impeller will be damaged if it
runs dry.
Glycerin should be used as a lubricant with dry
test runs.
The impeller will be damaged if other types of
lubricant than glycerin are used.
•Check the impeller (see gure) after dry test runs
and starts have been performed for more than
totally:
- 30 minutes (applies if the pump housing is lu-
bricated with glycerin)
- 5 minutes (applies if the pump housing is not
lubricated with glycerin)
If the impeller is cracked or damaged it must be
replaced. See instructions for replacement of im-
peller in the Operator’s manual for the D3.
Every 200th hour / At least once per year:
•Check the belt tension and condition. See in-
structions in the D3 Operator’s manual.
•Check the condition of the hose connections on
the ball valve.
•Check the condition and the function of the gradi-
ent relay and ball valve, as well as their wiring,
connectors and terminations. The function of the
inclination relay is checked by inverting it. The
engine should stop automatically.
6
After use in extreme conditions:
IMPORTANT! If the engine has been operated
partly submerged in water, a thorough inspec-
tion and cleaning must follow as soon as pos-
sible. Water, especially salt water, is particularly
damaging to the engine components. This also
applies even if the water level did not exceed the
crankshaft, as sea conditions may mean that
water washed over the engine.
•Check and clean all outer engine components.
Take special care of the electrical system.
•Replace the engine oil.
