Step 1: Hooking up the system
Follow steps 1through 6to hook up your system using the supplied cords and accessories.
Getting Started
1Remove the rear cover.
Push in on the
tabs and pull up
on the cover.
2Connect the speakers.
1Connect the speaker cords to the
SPEAKER R jack and the SPEAKER L
jack on the rear panel of the unit.
2Attach the speaker cables to the
clump.

3Attach the speakers.
Facing the front of the unit, attach the
speaker connected to the SPEAKER R
jack onto the right side of the unit and
the speaker connected to the
SPEAKER L jack onto the left side of
the unit.
3Set VOLTAGE SELECTOR to the
position of your local power line
voltage (except for North American
model.)
4Reinstall the rear cover.
Put the wires through the hole at the
bottom of the rear cover.
5Turn the unit upside down holding
the glass door with firm hand and
set the speaker cord into a groove of
the unit.
6Connect the power cord to a wall
outlet.
Note on the glass door of CD player
The CD player cover of the CMT-ED1 is made of
tempered glass.
Under normal conditions, this tempered glass is
more shock resistant and able to bear more
weight than ordinary glass. This glass, however,
may shatter if it receives a sharp blow or if it is
scratched.
To detach the speakers
1Slide the speakers in the opposite
direction of the arrows of the
illustration in “Attach the speakers”
(see step 2-3on this page.)
2After detaching the speakers, set the
speaker cords into the speaker cord
groove at the bottom of the speaker.
Otherwise, the speaker cord could be
damaged.

Inserting two AA (R6) batteries
into the remote
Tip
With normal use, the batteries should last for about
six months. When the remote no longer operates the
system, replace both batteries with new ones.
Note
If you do not use the remote for a long period of
time, remove the batteries to avoid possible damage
from battery leakage.

To remove the AM antenna
If noise is heard while listening to an AM
station, remove the AM antenna from the rear
panel and place the aerial outside the cabinet.
1Remove the rear cover.
(See step 1on the page 4.)
2Remove the AM antenna.
3Attach the rear cover.
(See step 4on the page 5.)
You can hang the AM antenna on a wall.
If noise is heard while listening to an FM
station, remove the FM antenna from the
rear panel and place the antenna outside
the cabinet.
To exchange the speaker net
You can remove the speaker net drowing up
to your side and exchange with the supplied
extra net.
Tip
See wire dressing for the rear panel prior to install
the rear cover.

Step 2: Setting the
time
You must set the time before using the timer
functions.
4Press ENTER.
The minute indication flashes.
5Press ≠/± to set the minutes.
6Press ENTER.
The clock starts working.
Tip
If you make a mistake, start over from step 1.
1Press TIMER SET.
The clock of the display begins flashes.
When “DAILY” or “TIMER REC”
appears, press ≠/± repeatedly so
that it disappears.
2Press ENTER.
The hour indication flashes.
3Press ≠/± to set the hour.
The clock uses the 12 -hour system.

Step 3: Presetting
radio stations
You can preset up to 30 stations, 20 for FM
and 10 for AM.

1Press FUNCTION repeatedly to
select “FM” or “AM.”
2Press FM or AM (or TUNER/BAND
on the remote repeatedly).
3Press TUNING/PLAY MODE on
the remote repeatedly until
“AUTO” appears.
4Press TUNING +/– (or ≠/±
on the remote).
The frequency indication changes and
scanning stops when the system tunes in
a station. “TUNED” and “ST” (for a
stereo program) appears.
5Press MEMORY on the remote.
The preset channel number flashes.
6Press TUNING +/– (or ≠/±
on the remote) to select the preset
number you want.
7Press ENTER on the remote.
The station is stored.
8Repeat steps 4 through 7 to store
other stations.

To tune in a station with a weak signal
Press TUNING/PLAY MODE on the remote
repeatedly until “MANUAL” appears in step
3, then press TUNING +/– (or ≠/± on
the remote) to tune in the station.
To change the preset number
Start over from step 2.
Tip
The preset stations are retained for about two days
when you disconnect the mains lead or a power
failure occurs.
To change the AM tuning interval
The AM tuning interval is factory-preset to 9 kHz
(10 kHz in some areas). To change the AM tuning
interval to 10 kHz (or 9 kHz), tune in any AM
station first, then turn off the power. While holding
down TUNING +, turn the power back on. When
you change the interval, the AM preset stations will
be erased. To reset the interval, repeat the same
procedure.
Note
The preset stations are canceled when you
disconnect the power cord or if a power failure
occurs for half a day.

recording
Be sure to match the colour of the plugs and
the connectors. To listen to the sound from
the connected MD deck, press FUNCTION
repeatedly until “MD” appears.
Connecting a VCR
Be sure to match the colour of the plugs and
the connectors. To listen to the sound from
the connected VCR, press FUNCTION
repeatedly until “MD” appears.
Connecting an MD deck for digital
recording
You can record from CD into the MD deck
digitally by connecting an optical cable.
