The e 901

A balanced kick sound to set and forget

The e 901 is a rugged boundary microphone with an extraordinary

ability to handle high sound pressure levels. Tailored to give the kick

drum a highly precise, very dry sound character, the e 901 realistically

captures every lightning fast attack.

The positioning of the e 901 in a bass drum couldn‘t be simpler: just

put it in – done. The integrated preamp and gold-plated XLR connector

have proven themselves to be exceptionally practical on stage.

Features

• Condenser microphone

• Highly precise and dry kick drum sound

• Natural sound, fast transient response

• Designed especially for high sound pressure levels

• Integrated preamp and gold-plated XLR connector

• Non-slip rubber damping plate on base

• Extremely rugged metal housing

Using the microphone

Positioning the microphone in a drum B

XPlace the e 901 in the drum. Position the microphone so that its

sound inlet basket 1is directed upwards.

Pos. Resulting sound Commentary

B.1 • Much resonance

• Much attack

• Less attack: Turn

the microphone

away from where

the beater strikes.

Position the microphone at the bottom

of the kick drum, approx. 10–20 cm

from the batter head.

B.2 • The e 901 is used

for picking up the

attack, the e 902

for picking up the

fundamental.

Combined with an e 902 positioned at

the resonant head. The lower micro-

phone must be phase-reversed to

avoid phase-cancellation effects due

to the second microphone being on the

other side of the drumskin.

Positioning the microphone on sound-reflecting sur-

faces B

XPlace the e 901 on the desired sound-reflecting surface. Position the

microphone so that its sound inlet basket 1is directed towards the

sound source.

Pos. Resulting sound Commentary

B.3 • Less room resonance

portions or comb filter

elements

• Improved speech

intelligibility

• Greater gain reserves in

contrast to free-standing

microphones

Lying on the altar or lectern.

Unobtrusive due to flat

design. No microphones in

the field of vision.

B.4 • Less room resonance in

contrast to free-standing

microphones

Lying on the conference

table, directed towards the

conference participants.

Microphone must not be

covered by papers, folders or

similar objects.

Pos. Resulting sound Commentary

B.5 • Less room resonance in

contrast to free-standing

microphones

• Improved speech intelligi-

bility

Lying at the edge of the

stage and directed towards

the stage. As spot micro-

phone of the PA system or

for monitoring purposes

in the theater cloakrooms.

Excellent rejection of rumble

noise; if necessary, place the

microphone on a soft pad

(e.g. mousepad).

If necessary, combine with

overhead microphones (e.g.

Sennheiser ME 36 with

MZH 30 B & MZC 30).

Positioning the monitor loudspeakers

XTo prevent feedback and crosstalk, position your monitor loudspeak-

ers in the angle area of the highest cancellation of the microphone

(approx. 180°).
