1.1 Introduction

This chapter providestheoutline features andoperation of theCavaliere 142 including the BIOS

Setup program and other system options.

The Cavaliere 142 notebook offers the latestin advanced portable computing and multimedia

technology that even outperforms mostdesktop computers. It incorporatesthelatest Intel

Pentium-IV PGA Processor or Intel Celeron PGA processor and fullycompatibleswith an

entirelibraryof PC softwarebased on operatingsystemssuch asMS-DOS, Windows 2000/

XP. Italsoruns on futureversions of Windows. It comes witha built-in keyboard, glide pad

pointing device, sound system, PCMCIA slots, USB (Universal SerialBus) port, IEEE 1394

port, advancedpowermanagement andmore new multimediafeatures.

1.4 QuickTour ofthe Notebook

Please takea moment tobecome familiar with the location andpurpose of everycontrol, the

LED statuspanel, connectors and ports, whichare illustrated in this section. It is

recommended to firstgo throughthe User Guide of the notebook, which is shipped together

with thenotebook for information on how to operateits features.

1.4.1 The Inside of the Notebook

To open the LCD cover of the notebook, find the coverlatchlocated at the frontcenter of the

LCD cover. Push the latch to the right toreleaseand tilt theLCD cover up. Inside,you will

see the LCD displaypanel, keyboard, touch pad, status LED, and power switch.

The notebookcomputer comes with acolor LCD that you can adjust for a

comfortableviewingposition. The LCD canbe 14.1" TFT color LVDS with

1024x768 XGA (Extended Graphics Array) or 1400x1050 SXGA+ resolution

panels. The features of the Color LCD Displayare summarized as follows:

Integrated mono microphonefor instant voice recording and simultaneous

•Status LED Indicator

Keeps youinformed of your notebook computer’s currentpower status and

operatingstatus. Description of the status icons appears in the latter part of

this section.

•Power On/Resume Button

Switches thecomputer power on andoff, or resumeswhenever itis in

Suspend mode.

Microsoft and IBM PS/2 mouse compatible with threeselectbuttons as one

Scrollbutton and two Touchpad click buttons. These threebuttons array

below theGlide pad. Themiddle oneis located with the Scroll buttonthat

letsyou execute the scrollpagefunction. Thetwo click buttons locatedat

each side supporttappingselection anddraggingfunctions. These buttons

worklike astandard computer mouse. Simplymoveyour fingertip over the

Glide Pad to controltheposition of thecursor. Use the selection buttons

below theGlide Pad toselectmenu items.

Easy Buttons

Therearethree easy buttons, two useforaccessingInternetand e-mailfunctions instantly and

easily, the other one lets you define certainfunctions byyourself. Descriptions of the easy

buttons appear in the latter part of this section.

just bypressing this button.Youcansimplify severalproceduresinentering

into Outlook 98/2000/2002... environment.

Status LED Indicator

Located just in front of thepalmrest assembly, you will find three LEDs forthepower and

battery charge status. These LEDs are positioned tobe visible even if the LCD cover is closed.
