requiredtopreventthepossibility ofprematurecomponentfailure.

4. To preventanX-Radiation possibly, itisessential touse thespecifiedpicture

tube.

2.1. HORIZONTAL OSCILLATORDISABLECIRCUIT TEST

SERVICE WARNING:

Thetest must bemadeas afinal check beforeset isreturnedtothecustomer.

1. Withtherearcoverremoved, supplyabouta120 V AC powersource totheset,

turn on theset.

2. Set thecustomercontrolstonormal operating positions.

3. ShortbetweenTP891 and TP892 on theMaincircuitboard withajumperwire.

Confirmthat thepicturegoes outofhorizontal sync.

4. Ifthisdoes notoccur, thehorizontal oscillator disablecircuitisnotoperating.

FollowtheRepairProcedures ofhorizontal oscillator disablecircuitbeforethe

set isreturnedtocustomer.

2.2. REPAIRPROCEDURES OF HORIZONTAL OSCILLATOR

DISABLECIRCUIT

1. Connect aDC voltmeterbetweencapacitor C513 (+)on theMaincircuitboard and

chassisground.

2. Ifapproximately+21.5V isnotpresentat that pointwhen120 V AC isapplied,

find thecause. Check R503, R5505, C5507, C513 and D503.

3. Carefullycheck above specifiedparts and relatedcircuits and parts. Whenthe

circuitisrepaired, trythehorizontal oscillator disablecircuittest again.

2.3. CIRCUIT EXPLANATION

2.3.1. HORIZONTALOSCILLATORDISABLECIRCUIT

Thepositive DC voltage, suppliedfromtheD503 cathodefor monitoring high

voltage, isappliedtotheIC5301 Pin11 through R503 and R5504. Undernormal

conditions, thevoltageat IC5301 Pin11 isless thanapprox. 3V. Ifthehigh voltage

at Flyback TransformerPin5exceedsthespecifiedvoltage, thepositive DC voltage

whichissuppliedfromtheD503 cathodealsoincreases. Theincreasedvoltageis

appliedtoIC5301 Pin11 through R503 and R5504. Duetotheincreasedvoltageat

IC5301 Pin11, thehorizontal oscillator frequency increases, thepicturegoes outof

horizontal sync, thebeamcurrentdecreases and thepicturebecomedarkinorder

tokeepX-radiation underspecification.

3. PREVENTIONOFELECTROSTATICDISCHARGE

(ESD) TO ELECTROSTATICALLYSENSITIVE (ES)

DEVICES

Somesemiconductor (solidstate) devices canbedamagedeasilybystatic

electricity. Suchcomponents commonlyarecalledElectrostaticallySensitive (ES)

Devices. Examples oftypical ES devices areintegratedcircuits and somefield-

effect transistorsaresemiconductor "chip"components. Thefollowing techniques

shouldbeusedtohelpreduce theincidence ofcomponentdamagecausedby

electrostaticdischarge(ESD).

1. Immediatelybeforehandling anysemiconductor componentor semiconductor-

equippedassembly, drainoff anyESDon your bodytouching aknownearth

ground. Alternatively, obtainand wearacommerciallyavailabledischarging ESD

wrist strap, whichshouldberemovedfor potential shock reasonsprior to

applying powertotheunitundertest.

2. Afterremoving anelectrical assemblyequippedwithES devices, place the

assemblyon aconductive surface suchas aluminumfoil, topreventelectrostatic

chargebuildup or exposureoftheassembly.

3. Use onlyagrounded-tipsoldering iron tosolderor unsolderES devices.

4. Use onlyananti-staticsolderremoval device. Somesolderremoval devices not

classifiedas "anti-static(ESDprotected)"cangenerate electrical charge

sufficienttodamageES devices.

5. Donotuse freon-propelledchemicals. These cangenerate electrical charges

sufficienttodamageES devices.

6. Donotremove areplacementES device fromits protective packageuntil

immediatelybeforeyou arereadytoinstall it. (Most replacementES devices are

packagedwithleadselectricallyshortedtogetherbyconductive foam, aluminum

foil or comparableconductive material).

7. Immediatelybeforeremoving theprotective material fromtheleadsofa

replacementES device, touchtheprotective material tothechassisor circuit

assemblyintowhichthedevice will beinstalled.

CAUTION:

Besureno powerisappliedtothechassisor circuit, and observe all othersafety

precautions.

8. Minimizebodilymotionswhenhandling unpackagedreplacementES devices.

(Otherwise harmless motion suchas thebrushing togetherofyour clothes fabric

or thelifting ofyour footfromacarpetedfloor cangenerate staticelectricity

(ESD) sufficienttodamageanES device).
