HIGHVOLTAGE

Thepowersupply section (bottom section) of theOTPN-1000contains no user serviceable parts. There is

exposedhigh voltageinsidethissection.Only factoryservicetechniciansshould openthepowersupplysection.

FIREHAZARD

TheAClineinputfuse is contained in the OTPN-1000 IEC powerinputconnector. This fuse isa3AG,

0.5A,slowblowfuse. To avoid a risk of fire, this fuse should be replaced only with an identically rated fuse.

SHOCKHAZARD

TheOTPT-300Ais designed for indoor useonly. Directexposureto moisture must be avoided.

INTRODUCTION

TheOlsonTechnology OTPT-300Aisacosteffectivefieldinstallable return lasertransmitterwithan RF

passbandof 5 to 70 MHz. The unit has a DFB laserwith 3mW output(+4.8dBm) or aFP laser with 1.6mW

output(2.0dBm). This transmitter isintendedonlyforindoor applications. Thistransmittermustbemounted to an

OTPN-1000Piconode. Itwillnotfunction as a stand-alone device. Thediplexfilter,test point, return OMI pad,

andACpower supply are part oftheOTPN-1000. The actual return passband isdeterminedby the diplex filter in

theOTPN-1000.The OTPT-300Aisequippedwithanauxiliaryexternal RF input for 5-300MHz operation that

canbeusedinupstreamvideoorblockconverterapplications.

ENVIRONMENTALCONSIDERATIONS

TheOTPT-300Aisspecifiedto operate from-10°C to +55°C. Itwill probably notrequire an air-

conditionedenvironment. Itshould be mountedinanadequatelyventilated area. Like anyotherelectronic

equipment,itwill probably havealongerlifespanif it isnotoperatedattheupper limit ofthetemperaturerange.

Installationin wet areasorareasofextremely highhumidityshouldbeavoided. Extremely dirtyordustyareas

shouldbe avoided if possible. Objects ordebris should not beallowed to block theopenings in the OTPN-1000

housingorfan. The unit should not beinstalledinareasthatareaccessible to children.

OPTICALCONNECTORSANDCLEANING

Thestandard optical connector is an SC/APC. In order to use FC/APC connectors, you mustorder a

conversionkit,OTLL-SCFCKIT. Thestandardopticalconnectorlocation is on the opposite sidefromthe RF

connector. Theconnectorcan be moved to theother side by swapping itwith a cover plate. Only ascrewdriveris

requiredforeither operation.

Eitherof these operationsmust be done beforethe OTPT-300Aismounted to the OTPN-1000. Failure

toreplace all of theOTPT-300Acoverscrewscancause RF ingress problems.

Thefiberendscanbedamagedbytheinsertionofcontaminatedconnectors. Sometypesof customer

damagetoconnectorsare not covered underwarranty. Fiberconnectorsshouldneverbe left uncovered.

Prepackagedalcoholwipes are the mostconvenientmeansofcleaningoptical connectors. Clean alcohol andlint

freewipes or swabsmay also beused.

INSTALLATION

1. Ifthe OTPN-1000 is operational, REMOVE power from theOTPN-1000 before proceeding.

2. Removethe cover plate on the side of the OTPN-1000. Save the plateand screws in order to eliminate RF

ingressiftheOTPT-300Ashouldeverbe removed.

3. Carefullypush the OTPT-300Aontothe side ofthe OTPN-1000. Clean the side of the OTPN-1000with

alcoholif required. No heat sink gasket or compoundis required between the OTPT-300AandtheOTPN-

1000.

4. Firmlyscrewin the four mounting screwsprovided.Iftheoriginalscrewsare missing, use 4-40x7/8”or

4-40x1”screwswithlockwashers.

5. Apply power to the OTPN-1000.

6. Measurethe OTPT-300Aoutputpower with an optical power meter and record the result.

7. Remove power from the OTPN-1000.

8. Cleanthereturnfiberperyoursystemstandardsandinsert into the optical output connector.

9. Apply power to the OTPN-1000.

10. Measure theOTPT-300Alaser powerand laser current testpoints and record theresults.

12. Remove thetop cover fromthe OTPN-1000.

12.ThespecificationforthereturnbandtransmitterRFinput level is -57dBmV/Hz (measured at the OTPN-1000

R.F. port). Thisvalue operates the system atthe NPR threshold. The OTPN-1000 hasaplug-in attenuator in

thereverse path. Also included is a -20dB testpoint in thereturn path. Note thatthe -20dB test point is before

theplug-inattenuator.Thesinglecarrierequivalent of -57dBmV/Hz is +9dBmV. Thepadmustbeselectedto

setthereturncarrier level to +9dBmVactual,afterthe attenuator.Witha test carrier present at theport,

measureitslevel at the reverse -20dBtestpoint. Use the actual level (test point+20dB)measured, to

determinewhatvalueofattenuatormustbeusedtoprovide+9dBmVaftertheattenuator.

EXAMPLE: TestPointreadingof+5dBmVplus -20dB test point equals +25dBmVminus +9dBmVequals

16dBpad required.

13.Firmly replace all OTPN-1000 topcover screws. Failure to doso can result incooling, RF radiation, orRF

ingressproblems.

AUXILIARYRFINPUT

Whenusing the OTPT-300AintheexternalauxiliaryRF inputmode(5-300MHz)thelevel will be

+6.0dBmVperchannelandhasnoinputattenuator or test point.

INTERNALCONTROLS

Switchingfrominternal diplex(5-42MHz)operationtoexternalRF input(5-300MHz)isachievedbyan

internaljumperJ1ontheOTPT-300Aprintedcircutboard.

Thereisno user adjustable internal laserpoweradjustment. Anychangetothelaserpower will result in

poorermodulation characteristics andreducedlinkperformance.

Thereturn pad and return test point arelocated inside the OTPN-1000 as shown above.

EXTERNALCONTROLSANDTESTPOINTS

TheOTPT-300 has 2 external DC test points. One reads laser current at1Vper 50mA. Atypicallaser

currentof25mAwould read.5Vat this testpoint. The laser power test pointis1Vper mW. This is for historical

tracking. Theopticalpowermeterisamuchmore accurate means of measuring power. Both of these test points

shouldbe measuredwitha highimpedancevoltmeter.
