1.1 NIOSH Approval Information

applicableregulations.

1.2 Special User Instructions

1. Anadequaterespiratoryprotectionprogrammustincludeknowledgeofhazards,hazardassessment,selectionof

properrespiratoryprotectiveequipment,instructionandtrainingintheuseofequipment,inspectionand

maintenanceofequipment,andmedicalsurveillance.[SeeOSHAregulations,Title29CFR,Part1910.134]

2. Thisrespiratorwillperformasdesignedonlyifusedandmaintainedaccordingtothemanufacturer’sinstructions.

TheProgramAdministratorandtheusersmustreadandunderstandtheseinstructionsbeforetryingtouseor

servicethisproduct.Weencourageourcustomerstowriteorcallforinformationonthisproductbeforeusingit.

3. ThisrespiratormaybeusedonlyafterproperinstructionandtraininginitsuseasspecifiedinOSHAregulations[Title

29CFR,Part1910.134].

4. Thisrespiratormaybewornforescapeonlyfromatmosphereswhichareimmediatelydangeroustolifeorhealthas

definedinTitle42CFR,Part84,orfromwhichthewearercannotescapewithouttheaidofarespirator.Underno

circumstancesshouldtherespiratorbeusedasanunderwaterdevice.

5. Approvedforuseattemperaturesabove0°F.

6. TomaintainNIOSHapproval,theairusedinthecylindermustmeettherequirementsoftheCompressedGas

AssociationSpecificationG-7.1forqualityverificationlevel(grade)Dairorequivalentspecifications.Thecylinder

shallmeetapplicableDOTspecifications.

7. Wearimpermeableprotectiveclothingforexposuretogasesorvaporswhichcanpoisonbyskinabsorption.

8. Donotalter,modify,orsubstituteanycomponentswithouttheapprovalofthemanufacturer.Alterationswillvoidthe

NIOSHapproval.

9. Inspecttherespiratorregularlyandmaintainitaccordingtothemanufacturer’sinstructions.Repairsmustonlybe

madebyproperlytrainedpersonnel.

2 General Description

Tworespiratorsaredescribedinthismanual:

• TransAire5MinuteEscapeHoodRespirator

• TransAire10MinuteEscapeHoodRespirator

BothrespiratorsfromMSAareapprovedbytheNationalInstituteforOccupationalSafetyandHealth(NIOSH)foruseas

anescapedevicefromhazardousatmospheres,includingthosewhichareimmediatelydangeroustolifeorhealth(IDLH).

AnIDLHatmosphereisdefinedas:

“ ... conditions that pose an immediate threat to life or health or conditions that pose an immediate threat of severe

exposure to contaminants, such as radioactive materials, which are likely to have adverse cumulative or delayed effects on

health.” [Title 42 CFR, Part 84, Subpart A, par. 84.2 (q)].”

TransAireEscapeapparatusconsistofacarriercontainingaloose-fittinghood,aflow-controlregulatorandhose

assembly,andanaircylinderandvalveassembly.TheTransAire5MinuteEscapeHoodRespiratoraircylindercontainsa

5-minutesupplyofairatFULLpressure(2216psig).TheTransAire10MinuteEscapeHoodRespiratoraircylinder

containsa10-minutesupplyofairatFULLpressure(3000psig).

TherearesignificantdifferencesbetweenESCAPEapparatus(liketheTransAire)andself-containedbreathingapparatus

(SCBA).

Theapparatuscanbewornonthechest,hiporwaist,andmaybecarriedintoorstoredinanareathatmaybepotentially

hazardous.Thehoodisdesignedtobeareservoirofbreathingair.Itisnotdesignedtoprovidesplashprotectionor

withstandexposuretodirectflameorhighheat.

3 Unpacking

Whenyoureceivetheapparatus,inspectittobesureithasnotbeendamagedinshipment.Inmaycases,youwillnotbe

thefirsttohandletheapparatus.So,checkthatitisassembledcorrectly.ChecktheaircylindertobesureitisFULL.The

pressuregaugeshouldread3000psiat70°Fforthe10-minuteunitand2216forthe5-minuteunit.

4 Donning

NOTE: Thecylindermaybewornthreeways:Chest-mounted,hip-mounted,orwaist-mounted.

4.1 Donning the Cylinder and Carrier



1. Chest-Mounted

a. CheckthatthestraphookisattachedtothebottomD-ring.

b. Adjustthecarrierstraptofitcomfortablyoveryourhead.

c. Slipthestrapoveryourheadsothatitrestsonthebackofyourneck.



2. Hip-Mounted

a. Adjustthecarrierstrapsothatitisfullyextended.

b. AttachthestraphooktotheD-ring.

c. Sliponearmintothestrap.Placethestrapoveryourheadandrestiton

yourshoulder.

 3. Waist-Mounted(usingtheoptionalshoulderstrap)

a. AttachtheshoulderstraptothetopD-rings.



b. RemovethecarrierstrapfromtheD-ringandadjustthestraptoitsfull

length.

c. Dontheshoulderstrap.Pulltheadjustingstrapforasnug,comfortablefit.

d. AttachthecarrierstraphooktotheD-ringandadjustthestraptoyour

waistsize.

4.2 Donning the Apparatus Hood

1. Openthecylindervalvealltheway.



2. Pullthehook-and-loopstripandpullthepouchcoveroutawayfromthecarrier.

Graspthehoodfromthepouchandlistenforthesoundofairrushinginsidethe

hood.

3. Stretchtheneckbandwithbothhandsandpullthehoodoveryourheadsothat

theregulatorhoseisatthefront.

4. Makesurethereisnothing(suchasclothingorhair)betweentheneckbandand

yournecktopreventagoodseal.

5. Exittoasafeatmosphere—Immediately!

WARNING!

Thisapparatusisdesignedtosupplyairfornomorethan5or10minutes.Donotremaininthehazardousatmosphere.

Leaveimmediatelyandreturntoasafeatmosphere.Removethehoodwhenairflowstops.Therushingsoundwillstop,

andthehoodwillbegintocollapsearoundyourhead.

Failure to follow this warning can result in serious personal injury or death by suffocation.

5 Removing the TransAire Escape Hood

1. Stretchtheneckbandwithbothhandsandpullthehoodupoveryourhead.

2. Closethecylindervalve.

3. Removetheshoulderstrap(andwaiststrapifused).



4. Hip-Mounted

a. Adjustthecarrierstrapsothatitisfullyextended.

b. AttachthestraphooktotheD-ring.

c. Sliponearmintothestrap.Placethestrapoveryourheadandrestiton

yourshoulder.

 5. Waist-Mounted(usingtheoptionalshoulderstrap)

a. AttachtheshoulderstraptothetopD-rings.



b. RemovethecarrierstrapfromtheD-ringandadjustthestraptoitsfull

length.

c. Dontheshoulderstrap.Pulltheadjustingstrapforasnug,comfortablefit.

d. AttachthecarrierstraphooktotheD-ringandadjustthestraptoyour

waistsize.

OSHAregulations(29CFR,Part1910.134)requirethattheuserestablishamaintenanceprogram.Thisprogrammust

includecleaninganddisinfecting,componentinspection,andreplacementofwornordamagedparts.

6.1 Cleaning and Disinfecting

WARNING!

Inspecttheapparatusafterithasbeencleanedanddisinfected.Becarefulthatyoudonotbreatheortouchthe

contaminantinhandlingtheapparatusoritsparts.Useequipmentdesignedtoprotectyoufromthespecificcontaminant.

Failure to follow this warning can result in exposure to the contaminant, and cause serious personal injury or

death.

Dependingonthecleaningpolicyadopted,eitheradesignatedpersonortheusershouldcleantheapparatus.ANSI

suggeststhatusersshouldbetrainedinthecleaningprocedure.Preparetheapparatusforcleaningandsanitizingas

follows:

1. Makesurethatthecylindervalveisfullyclosed.

2. Removetheexcesscontaminantfromtheapparatus.

3. Unscrewthehosenutandpullthehosefittingoutofthehoodinlet.

 4. Removethemufflerfromthehood.

5. Unscrewandremovethepressureregulatorfromthecylindervalve.



6. Untietheretainingcordtoopenthecylindercarrierandremovetheaircylinder.

7. AddoneounceofConfidencePlusGermicidalCleaneroramildcleaning

solutiontoagallonofwarmwater(maximumtemperature110°F).

8. Submergethehoodandcarrierinthecleaningsolutionandscrubgentlyuntil

theyareclean.

9. Rinsebothhoodandcarrierthoroughlyinplain,warmwater(maximum

temperature110°F),thenairdry.Ifnotrinsedthoroughly,ConfidencePlus

GermicidalCleanermayirritateyourskin.

CAUTION!

Donotforce-drywithheat.Temperaturesabove110°Fmaydistortordamagepartsofthisapparatus.Thehoodisplastic

andmaybescratchedifrubbedwithcoarsedryclothorpapertowels.

Failure to follow this caution can result in minor or moderate injury.



10.UseadampclothorspongesaturatedinConfidencePlusGermicidalCleanerto

cleanthemuffler,mufflercover,diffuser,hoodhose,pressureregulator,cylinder

valveandaircylinderclean.

NOTE: Whentheyhavedried,reinstallthemuffler,diffuser,andmufflercoverin

thehood.

11.Ensurethatthemufflercoverisinstalledandpointedupatapproximately45

degreesleftorrightofcenter.
