For NTCIP controllers:
●If the controller in your cabinet uses NTCIP over Ethernet to connect the
SmartLink, the TrafficLink Interface is not required. However, you will need to
determine the IP settings for your installation. Contact Customer Support for
assistance.
If your application requires TrafficLink Interface EF-140, the package also contains:

Safety recommendations
●Make sure that a certified electrician is present for the installation and that you
follow the appropriate safety recommendations when installing the components.
●Do not install components if the conditions are not safe, such as during adverse
weather situations.
●If possible, inspect the wires in the cabinet for any unsafe wear and replace them
if necessary.

Before you begin the installation
Plan component locations
Before you begin, determine the best location for the TrafficLink Antenna, SmartLink,
and TrafficLink Interface (if necessary). You might need to move some of the existing
equipment in the cabinet to accommodate the devices.

For best ventilation, install the SmartLink and TrafficLink Interface vertically.
Place the components so that there is a minimum of 12.7 mm (1/2 in) around them for
ventilations, for cable connections, so that all cables can reach, and so that you can
access the components during maintenance.
You might have to move some of the existing equipment in the cabinet to
accommodate the SmartLink and TrafficLink Interface.

If you cannot install the SmartLink next to the TrafficLink Interface, install them no more
than 1.2 m (4 ft) apart.
Use caution when moving components to avoid disconnecting cables.
Make sure that you have access to terminal block wiring or an 110V-240V uninterrupted
(non-GFCI) power supply for the SmartLink and TrafficLink Interface.
Required tools

●Small container to catch filings
●Industrial-strength cleaner
●Heat gun if installing in under 5°C (41°F) weather
●Small container or cloth
Please bring a copy of the Installation Checklist to your installation.
Install the TrafficLink Antenna

1. Mark a location for the antenna hole on top of the cabinet, at least 152.4 mm (6
in) from any edge. Make sure that you choose a location so that your drill bit or
punch will not drill through or puncture any equipment in the cabinet.
2. To contain sharp steel burrs that can cut wire and cause an electrical short, place
a small container or cloth inside the cabinet below the drill location to catch any
loose debris from drilling.
3. Drill or punch a hole at the marked location.
4. To provide a smooth surface for good adhesion, clean the surface where you are
installing the antenna with industrial strength cleaner. Remove any burrs from
drilling.
Note: Make sure to completely remove any dirt, moisture, frost and steel burrs
from drilling before continuing.
5. Remove the twist ties, nut, and washer from the antenna cables.
6. Guide the antenna cables through the hole in the cabinet as shown in the
following illustration.

7. If the ambient temperature is below 5°C (41°F), use the heat gun to warm the
surface where you are placing the antenna.
8. Remove the protective film from the adhesive pad on the bottom of the antenna
and then firmly press the antenna onto the top of the cabinet.
9. Slide the washer and nut around the antenna cables.
10.Hand tighten the nut.
11.Using the wrench, tighten the nut one full turn.
12.Visually inspect the antenna to make sure that the adhesive forms a tight seal on
top of the cabinet.
Follow the procedure that matches your installation scenario:
●Install the SmartLink (travel time only)
●Install the SmartLink with a TrafficLink Interface
●Install the SmartLink without a TrafficLink Interface

1. Place the SmartLink in the planned location in the cabinet.
2. Using the label on each antenna cable as a guide, connect each antenna cable to
the corresponding connector on the SmartLink. The illustration below shows the
labels next to the corresponding connectors.

3. Connect the SmartLink to the power supply (terminal block wiring or 110V-240V
non-GFCI) and then turn on the SmartLink.
4. Verify that the Power LED is solid green.
5. Verify that the NET LED is solid green. The SmartLink might take a few minutes
to connect to TrafficLink.
Install the SmartLink with a TrafficLink Interface
Installing a TrafficLink Interface ABC or TrafficLink Interface EF-140 requires putting the
intersection into flash. If you prefer to review these steps in a video tutorial, see
SmartLink installation.
Install the SmartLink
1. Place the SmartLink in the planned location in the cabinet.
2. Using the label on each antenna cable as a guide, connect each antenna cable to
the corresponding connector on the SmartLink. The illustration below shows the
labels next to the corresponding connectors.

3. Connect the Ethernet cable from Ethernet Port 3 on the SmartLink to the Ethernet
Port on the TrafficLink Interface ABC.
4. Connect the SmartLink to the power supply (terminal block wiring or 110V-240V
non-GFCI) and then turn on the SmartLink.
5. Verify that the Power LED is solid green.
6. Verify that the NET LED is solid green. The SmartLink might take a few minutes
to connect to TrafficLink. You can continue installing other components while the
SmartLink is connecting.
Install the TrafficLink Interface ABC
If you prefer to review these steps in a video tutorial, see ABC(D) interface installation.
If you need help attaching the ABCD cables, use the supplied MioChuck to grasp the
cables. (Your installation might not require a D cable.)
1. If you are installing the TrafficLink Interface vertically, as recommended for
optimal ventilation, screw the cabinet clip to the back of the TrafficLink Interface.
Hand tighten the screws.
2. Place the TrafficLink Interface ABC(D) in the planned location in the cabinet.
3. Attach the ABC(D) cables to the corresponding color-coded inputs on the
CONTROLLER side of the TrafficLink Interface.
4. When it is safe to do so, manually put the intersection into flash mode.
5. Disconnect the ABC(D) cables from the existing controller.
6. Attach the ABC(D) cables from the cabinet to the corresponding color-coded
inputs on the CABINET side of the TrafficLink Interface.
7. Attach the ABC(D) cables from the CONTROLLER side of the TrafficLink Interface
to the corresponding inputs on the controller.
8. Connect the TrafficLink Interface to the power supply (terminal block wiring or
110V-240V non-GFCI) and then turn on the TrafficLink Interface.
9. Verify that the TrafficLink Interface power LED is solid green. If it is not, check the
cable connections.
10. Return the intersection to its normal operating mode.

Install the TrafficLink Interface EF-140
If you need help attaching the ABD cables, use the supplied MioChuck to grasp the
cables.
1. If you are installing the TrafficLink Interface vertically, as recommended for
optimal ventilation, screw the cabinet clip to the back of the TrafficLink Interface.
Hand tighten the screws.
2. Place the TrafficLink Interface EF-140 in the planned location in the cabinet.
3. Attach the ABD cables to the corresponding color-coded inputs on the
CONTROLLER side of the TrafficLink Interface.
4. When it is safe to do so, manually put the intersection into flash mode.
5. Disconnect the ABD cables from the existing controller.
6. Attach the ABD cables from the cabinet to the corresponding color-coded inputs
on the CABINET side of the TrafficLink Interface.
7. Attach the ABD cables to the corresponding inputs on the controller.
8. Connect the TrafficLink Interface EF-140 to the power supply.
9. Verify that the TrafficLink Interface power LED is solid green. If it is not, check the
cable connections.
10. Return the intersection to its normal operating mode.
